Explosion proof mobile phone for S-Oil, Onsan/Ulsan

S-Oil's Onsan refinery, in the Ulsan area on South Korea's south-east coast, is an Aramco-owned plant in the middle of a large expansion. For anyone specifying an explosion proof mobile phone for South Korea, that makes the site two things at once: a mature refinery and an active construction project. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams who decide what is allowed into its classified areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for S-Oil at Onsan, South Korea

S-Oil is majority-owned by Saudi Aramco and operates its refinery and petrochemical complex at Onsan, within the greater Ulsan area. Trade press describes the Shaheen project there as a multi-billion-dollar addition, with a residue upgrading complex, an olefin downstream complex, a large mixed-feed cracker and polyethylene, polypropylene and propylene oxide units, scheduled to complete in 2026; check its current status with the site. So the classified areas now span an operating refinery, with crude distillation, conversion, desulphurisation and tank farms, and new petrochemical units as they are commissioned. Gas, vapour and hydrogen are the main concerns, with polymer powder adding dust questions where polyethylene and polypropylene are handled. The site's classification drawings decide the zone for each area.

Who is on the site

S-Oil operations
Operators, inspectors and maintenance technicians in the existing refinery.
Project and construction teams
Contractors building and then commissioning the new units.
Aramco-linked engineers
Shareholder-level reviewers who may visit on technical matters.
Neighbouring operators
Other Ulsan-area sites whose contractors also move through Onsan.

Areas that matter to a handset

Existing refinery units
Crude distillation, conversion and treating with hydrocarbon gas and hydrogen.
New olefin and cracker units
Cracking furnaces and compression as they are commissioned.
Polymer units
Polyethylene and polypropylene powder, a dust consideration.
Propylene oxide
A reactive, flammable product that raises the standard of control.
Tank farms and berths
Coastal Zone 1 and 2 areas in wind and salt air.
Why it fits

What an expanding refinery asks of a Zone 1 handset

Five points that shape what S-Oil engineers are likely to ask.

An operating plant and a construction site together

Operators and construction staff share roads and gates. A single enrolled device type with controlled applications is simpler to manage than a mixture of phones and radios. The Zone 1 target, II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, is the same for either group.

Commissioning is a different job from operating

During start-up, engineers walk punch lists and loop checks. Photographs with a GNSS position and a call to the control room from one device cut the paperwork a commissioning team would otherwise carry.

Gas and dust on the same complex

The new polymer units introduce combustible dust to a site that was mainly gas. The IS-04Z1 carries a Zone 21 design target as well as Zone 1, so the same handset can be considered for both, subject to the certificate.

Aramco ownership, Korean operation

S-Oil operates as a Korean company under KOSHA, while its shareholder brings its own engineering culture. The IECEx file is being prepared so a reviewer from either side can follow the evidence.

Coastal climate

Onsan is on the coast, with humid summers and cold winters. IP68 and rugged build are specified for that range, and the 4,000 mAh battery covers a shift outdoors.

How work is organised

Operations, shutdowns and the project workforce

Existing units follow a normal pattern of continuous shifts, round sheets and periodic shutdowns, while a project of this size adds a large construction and commissioning workforce moving through the same gates. Operators and construction contractors are not under the same supervision, which is why device ownership, enrolment and wipe matter. Handsets issued to a construction package should be retired as the package hands over to operations, with nothing left on a device that should not stay on site. Confirm with S-Oil how handover, permits and personal devices are managed during commissioning.

Operations01

Unit rounds

An operator walks the existing refinery logging readings, photographing defects and calling the board, on one device.

Commissioning02

Loop checks and punch lists

Commissioning engineers tag defects with a photo and position on a new unit and close them from the device.

Contractors03

Package handover

A construction contractor returns enrolled devices at handover to operations, and they are wiped and reissued to maintenance.

Approvals and access

What an Aramco-owned Korean refinery will ask a supplier for

S-Oil's internal vendor process is not public and Aramco's own approval process applies inside the Kingdom, not here by default, so we make no claim about either. ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams for its requirements before any evaluation. The usual items for a Korean refinery are below.

Certificate
IECEx Certificate of Conformity, in progress and not issued.
Korean position
KOSHA recognition and KC radio approval, both in progress.
Operator listing
Entry on the operator's equipment list, which follows certification.
Supply route
A Korea-registered partner able to hold the documents.
Questions · S-Oil

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 approved for use at S-Oil yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No approval, evaluation or order exists at S-Oil.

Does S-Oil follow the same vendor approval as Saudi Aramco's domestic operations?

Not directly. S-Oil operates as a Korean company under Korean regulation, and Aramco's ownership informs investment-level oversight rather than replacing local approval.

Do the new polymer units change what a handset needs?

They add combustible dust alongside gas. The IS-04Z1 has both Zone 1 and Zone 21 design targets, but the area drawing and the final certificate decide where it may go.

Is S-Oil the same as SK Energy or GS Caltex?

No. All three are refineries in Korea, two of them in the Ulsan area, but they have different owners and separate procurement.
