Explosion proof mobile phone for GS Caltex, Yeosu

An explosion proof mobile phone for South Korea has to work the same way at Yeosu as it does at Ulsan, but GS Caltex adds a particular wrinkle: it is a 50/50 joint venture between GS Energy and Chevron, so a handset arriving at its refinery and petrochemical complex is read by engineers used to two different traditions. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams who decide what may be carried past the gate. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone meets the GS Caltex complex in South Korea

GS Caltex runs its refinery and petrochemical complex at Yeosu on Korea's south coast. In late 2022 the company announced it had completed a mixed feed cracker next to it, fed on naphtha, LPG and refinery off-gas and making ethylene, propylene and polyethylene. That matters for a handset because the site now carries two distinct hazard families side by side. The refinery side is hydrocarbon gas and hydrogen under pressure, in crude distillation, hydrotreating, catalytic cracking and tank farms. The cracker side adds cracked-gas compression, furnace areas and polymer handling, where combustible dust can enter the area classification alongside gas. Which areas are Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21 or Zone 22 is a matter for the site's own classification drawings, not for a brochure.

Who is on the site

GS Energy and Chevron
The two equal shareholders in GS Caltex; the company runs its own engineering and procurement.
GS Caltex operations
Process operators, shift supervisors, inspection and instrument technicians on continuous rotas.
Turnaround contractors
Korean maintenance and EPC firms that arrive in large numbers during planned shutdowns.

Areas that matter to a handset

Crude and vacuum distillation
Hydrocarbon gas and vapour, hot surfaces, frequent walk-down inspection.
Hydrogen-bearing units
Hydrotreating and hydroprocessing loops; IIC gas group is the relevant design target.
Mixed feed cracker
Cracking furnaces, cracked-gas compression and ethylene or propylene handling.
Polyethylene and polymer areas
Powder and pellet handling where combustible dust can be present.
Tank farms and jetties
Open-air Zone 1 and 2 areas with long walking distances and sea wind.
Why it fits

What the Yeosu complex asks of a Zone 1 handset

Five points that a GS Caltex engineer is likely to press on, and how the IS-04Z1 is designed to answer them.

Two engineering traditions, one evidence file

Chevron's practice leans on API and IECEx-recognised documentation, while Korean plants work within the domestic KOSHA framework. The IS-04Z1 is being certified to IECEx with the technical file assembled so that either reviewer can follow it, and KOSHA recognition is being pursued alongside.

Refinery and cracker on one rating

A technician who walks from a crude unit to the new cracker should not have to swap devices. The design target is Zone 1, II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which covers hydrocarbon gas and hydrogen, and a Zone 21 dust target for polymer areas. The certificate, once issued, will state the exact scope.

Sea air and a humid south coast

Yeosu is on the coast, with salt in the air and hot, wet summers. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified for exactly that kind of exposure, with the 4,000 mAh battery sized for a full shift of rounds.

Korean interface for operators, English for the licensor

Operators work in Korean while visiting engineers and some contractors work in English. Android 16 carries both languages on one build, so a shared device does not have to be reconfigured at shift change.

A large contractor population at turnaround

A shutdown brings a temporary workforce through one gate. EMM and MDM enrolment through Android Enterprise lets the operator push a work profile, restrict applications and switch the 50 MP camera policy on or off centrally, then wipe or retire devices when the contract ends.

How work is organised

Rounds, shutdowns and who holds the permit

A refinery of this size runs on continuous shifts, with operators on fixed rounds and a permit-to-work system controlling anything that changes the hazard. Planned shutdowns are scheduled well ahead, and a new unit such as the cracker adds its own start-up and performance-test period with licensor and contractor staff on site. For a phone this means two modes: a long, repetitive round that rewards battery life and glove-friendly use, and a short, crowded turnaround that rewards fast enrolment, clear device ownership and central control.

Operations01

Unit rounds

An operator logs readings, photographs a leaking gland and calls the control room without leaving the classified area, replacing a radio, a paper round sheet and a separate camera.

Turnaround02

Contractor onboarding

A contractor supervisor receives a pre-enrolled device with the permit app and site directory already loaded, and hands it back at demobilisation to be wiped and reissued.

Start-up03

Commissioning walk-downs

Licensor and owner engineers walk punch lists on a new unit, tagging defects with a photograph and a GNSS position on the same device.

Approvals and access

What the joint venture will ask a supplier for

We cannot describe GS Caltex's internal vendor process because it is not public, and we will not guess at a programme name. What a joint venture of this kind can reasonably be expected to ask is below. Ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams for the exact requirements before any evaluation.

Certificate
An IECEx Certificate of Conformity with the full marking string; this is in progress and not yet issued.
Korean recognition
KOSHA position, and KC radio approval for the phone itself; both in progress.
Site approval
Entry on the operator's own approved-equipment list, which follows certification rather than preceding it.
Supply route
Supply through a Korea-registered partner who can hold the documentation.
Questions · GS Caltex

Frequently asked questions

Does GS Caltex follow Korean or American engineering standards?

Neither exclusively, in our expectation. The company is owned equally by a Korean and an American shareholder, so documentation is being prepared so that either engineering team can read it. The site's own HSE and engineering staff decide what applies.

Is the IS-04Z1 approved for use at GS Caltex yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No approval, listing or trial exists at GS Caltex, and none should be assumed before the certificate does.

Will the device cover both the refinery and the new cracker?

The design target is Zone 1 gas, II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, plus Zone 21 for dust. Whether it may enter a specific area depends on that area's classification and the final certificate scope, so send us the drawing.

Does acceptance at GS Caltex carry over to other GS or Chevron sites?

No. GS Caltex is a separate operating company with its own site-level review, and neither shareholder's other plants inherit its decision.
