Explosion proof mobile phone for petrochemical sites in South Korea

Korean petrochemicals is a story of three coastal complexes, Ulsan, Yeosu and Daesan, where crackers, aromatics units and polymer plants sit beside refineries. An explosion proof mobile phone for South Korea has to suit that mix of gas, vapour and polymer dust. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams who equip people on those sites. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for petrochemical sites in South Korea

At Ulsan, SK Energy's complex is shared with SK Geo Centric, SK Innovation's chemicals affiliate, and S-Oil is building an olefin and polymer expansion at Onsan. At Yeosu, GS Caltex completed a mixed feed cracker in late 2022, and other producers including Lotte Chemical, LG Chem and Hanwha have plants in the Yeosu area. At Daesan, Hyundai Oilbank integrates petrochemicals with its refinery, and Lotte Chemical, LG Chem and Hanwha TotalEnergies also operate there. Hazards are ethylene, propylene and aromatics streams in crackers and reactors, hydrogen in some units, and polyethylene or polypropylene powder in finishing. Which areas are Zone 1, 2, 21 or 22 is shown on each plant's classification drawings.

Who is in the sector

Lotte Chemical
Large producer with plants in more than one of these complexes.
LG Chem and Hanwha
Major producers around Yeosu and Daesan.
SK Geo Centric
Chemicals affiliate in the Ulsan Complex.
Refiner-integrated units
Petrochemical units run by GS Caltex, S-Oil and Hyundai Oilbank.

Areas that matter to a handset

Cracking furnaces
Hot, gas-fired areas with high-pressure hydrocarbon service.
Compression and separation
Cracked gas compression, cold boxes and fractionation.
Reactors and aromatics
Aromatic hydrocarbons and hydrogen-bearing loops.
Polymer finishing
Powder and pellet handling, a combustible-dust consideration.
Utilities and storage
Spheres, bullets and pipe racks with ethylene, propylene and LPG.
Why it fits

What a Korean petrochemical plant asks of a Zone 1 handset

Plants differ, but these five points recur across the sector.

Gas and dust on the same plant

Crackers are gas risks and polymer finishing is a dust risk. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas, II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, with a Zone 21 target for dust, so one handset can be assessed for both. The final certificate states the scope.

Ethylene and hydrogen in the same area

Light olefin and hydrogen streams call for IIC, the most demanding common gas group. The design target addresses it, subject to certification.

Contractors between neighbouring sites

Contractors at Ulsan, Yeosu or Daesan move between plants run by different companies. Each operator keeps its own approval process, so one approval does not carry to the next.

Continuous operation, long shutdowns

Crackers run for years between major shutdowns, and the shutdown that follows involves very large contractor numbers. Enrolment and wipe through Android Enterprise MDM keep a device pool under control.

Korean and English on one build

Operators work in Korean, while licensors and some contractors use English. Android 16 carries both languages on one handset.

How work is organised

Continuous running and the big shutdown

Petrochemical plants run around the clock, and operators work fixed rounds across furnace, compression and storage areas. Between shutdowns, maintenance is by permit; at the shutdown, a cracker is taken apart, inspected and rebuilt in a compressed window with a large visiting workforce. New units, such as those under construction or recently completed in Korea, also have start-up and performance-test periods with licensor engineers present. The handset's job changes with the phase: a robust round tool in steady operation, a fast-enrolled, tightly controlled device during the shutdown.

Operations01

Cracker and reactor rounds

An operator logs readings, photographs equipment and phones the control room from the same handset.

Shutdown02

Inspection and repair

Inspectors tag findings with a photograph and position on a furnace or vessel, ready for the report.

Polymer03

Finishing and warehouse areas

Staff work near powder handling, where the area classification includes dust, and use the same enrolled device across it.

Approvals and access

What petrochemical operators will ask a supplier for

Each producer's equipment approval is internal and we will not name a programme we cannot verify. For each plant, ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams for current requirements in writing. The usual items are below.

Certificate
IECEx Certificate of Conformity, in progress and not issued.
Korean position
KOSHA recognition and KC radio approval, both in progress.
Operator listing
Entry on the operator's equipment list, which follows certification.
Supply route
A Korea-registered partner able to hold the documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for petrochemical use in South Korea yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and certification, including IECEx and KOSHA recognition, is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Does the device cover both gas and dust areas?

The design targets are Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust. The actual scope will be written on the certificate, and each area's classification decides where it may go.

Does approval at one plant carry to a neighbour in the same complex?

No. Companies in a shared zone such as Ulsan run their own procurement and site rules.

Is KOSHA certification required in addition to IECEx?

Korean operators generally expect KOSHA recognition to be addressed, with IECEx as the international evidence behind it. Confirm with each operator.
