Explosion proof mobile phone for Hyundai Oilbank, Daesan

Daesan, on the west coast, is a younger industrial complex than Ulsan or Yeosu, and an explosion proof mobile phone for South Korea has to be specified for a site where refining and petrochemicals sit close together. Hyundai Oilbank runs its refinery and petrochemical operations there. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams who decide what may be carried into its classified areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for Hyundai Oilbank at Daesan, South Korea

Hyundai Oilbank's refinery is at Daesan in Chungcheongnam-do, on the Yellow Sea coast, within a petrochemical complex shared with other Korean producers. Trade press describes a base-oil joint venture with Shell at Daesan, and the company's petrochemical units sit alongside the refinery. For a handset the picture is a conventional integrated site: crude and vacuum distillation, conversion units, hydrogen-bearing treating loops, and aromatics and olefins units, together with tank farms and a marine terminal. Hydrocarbon gas and vapour are the main classification drivers, with hydrogen present in treating and conversion, and a conservative operator will treat IIC as the relevant gas group wherever hydrogen is in play. Which areas are Zone 1 or Zone 2 comes from the site's classification drawings.

Who is on the site

Hyundai Oilbank operations
Process operators, maintenance and inspection staff on continuous shifts.
HD Hyundai group
Parent group, also the owner of the Ulsan shipbuilder.
Joint-venture partners
Companies operating units on the site under their own arrangements.
Contractors
Maintenance, scaffolding, insulation and inspection firms on shutdown and project work.

Areas that matter to a handset

Crude and vacuum units
Hydrocarbon gas and vapour with hot surfaces.
Conversion and treating units
Hydrogen-bearing loops where IIC applies.
Petrochemical units
Olefin and aromatics streams and polymer handling.
Tank farms
Large open-air storage areas with long distances between tanks.
Marine terminal
Berths and loading arms, wind-exposed and coastal.
Why it fits

What Daesan asks of a Zone 1 handset

Daesan has its own character: a newer site, a coastal climate and a layered ownership. These are the points we expect an engineer to raise.

A site that is newer than Ulsan or Yeosu

Newer plants tend to have more complete and consistent area classification drawings, which makes it easier to state where a device may go. The IS-04Z1 design target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is intended to map straight onto a Zone 1 gas area on such a drawing.

Cold west-coast winters and wind

Daesan sits on an exposed coast, where winter wind and cold are the issue rather than heat. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified across Korea's seasonal range, and the 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a full outdoor shift.

Group relationships

The operator belongs to a group that also owns a major shipbuilder. That may shape group-level vendor conversations, but site equipment approval at Daesan remains the refinery's own decision.

Refining and petrochemicals on one handset

A technician moving between a crude unit and a petrochemical unit should not need a different device. The Zone 1 gas target covers both, and the camera and GNSS features are the same wherever the person is.

One console for operators and contractors

Android Enterprise enrolment and MDM allow work profiles per team, camera policy by area, and a clean retirement of devices at the end of a shutdown contract.

How work is organised

Shifts, shutdowns and a remote coastal location

A refinery of this kind runs continuous shifts with operators on rounds and permit-to-work controlling maintenance. Planned shutdowns bring in contractors in large numbers, so gate processing and device handover happen at scale. Daesan is a coastal industrial site rather than a city centre, so local spares and a defined swap process for a failed device matter. Ask the site team what the current rule is for personal phones, photography and radios.

Operations01

Process unit rounds

An operator reads gauges, photographs a flange weep and phones the shift supervisor in one device, replacing a paper sheet and a radio.

Shutdown02

Contractor handover

A contractor team receives enrolled devices with the permit application and area map, returning them for wipe and reissue when the shutdown ends.

Marine03

Terminal and tank-farm checks

Terminal staff walk berths and tank farms in wind and rain, recording a position and photograph for each inspection point.

Approvals and access

What the refinery will ask a supplier for

We have no insight into Hyundai Oilbank's internal approval process and will not guess at a programme name. Ask the operator's procurement and hse teams for its requirements before any evaluation. The usual items for a Korean refinery are below.

Certificate
IECEx Certificate of Conformity, in progress and not issued.
Korean position
KOSHA recognition and KC radio approval, both in progress.
Operator listing
Entry on the refinery's equipment list, which follows certification.
Supply route
A Korea-registered partner able to hold the documents.
Questions · Hyundai Oilbank

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Hyundai Oilbank yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No evaluation, listing or order exists at Hyundai Oilbank.

Does the group's shipbuilding business influence refinery approvals?

Not directly. Equipment approval at Daesan is a site decision by the refinery's own engineering and HSE staff, although group-level relationships may be visible in procurement conversations.

Does the device suit a newer refinery site?

A more uniform, better documented classification usually makes it easier to say where a device with a defined rating may be used, but the final certificate scope, not the age of the plant, decides.

Does a partner's base-oil or petrochemical unit follow the same approval?

Not necessarily. Units operated by joint-venture partners may run their own rules, so confirm which organisation controls each area.
