Explosion proof mobile phone for oil, gas and refining in South Korea

South Korea has very little upstream oil and gas, so oil and gas work here means refining: crude arrives by tanker and is processed at a handful of very large coastal complexes. An explosion proof mobile phone for South Korea therefore has to suit refinery rounds, tank farms, jetties and turnarounds. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams who equip people at those sites. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for oil, gas and refining in South Korea

Korean refining is concentrated in four large companies on three coasts. SK Energy runs the Ulsan complex, which began operating in 1964. S-Oil operates at Onsan, also in the Ulsan area, where it is building a major petrochemical expansion. GS Caltex is at Yeosu on the south coast, and Hyundai Oilbank is at Daesan on the west coast. Each is a different company with different owners, so each runs its own approval route; there is no single Korean refinery register to join. What they share is the physical hazard: hydrocarbon gas and vapour in distillation, conversion and storage, hydrogen in treating loops, and heat. For a handset, what matters is how an area is classified on that site's drawings, and whether the device's design target fits it.

The four refiners

SK Energy
Ulsan; part of SK Innovation and the SK Group.
S-Oil
Onsan, Ulsan; majority-owned by Saudi Aramco.
GS Caltex
Yeosu; 50/50 joint venture of GS Energy and Chevron.
Hyundai Oilbank
Daesan; part of the HD Hyundai group.

Classified areas common to all four

Crude and vacuum distillation
Hydrocarbon gas and vapour, hot surfaces.
Conversion and cracking
Hot, heavy service with fouling and high pressures.
Hydrotreating loops
Hydrogen; IIC gas group is the design target.
Tank farms
Large open-air Zone 1 and 2 areas with long walks.
Jetties and loading
Crude and product berths exposed to sea wind and salt.
Why it fits

What Korean refineries ask of a Zone 1 handset

Four owners and one hazard. These are the points that recur across the sector.

Four ownership models in one sector

A chaebol, a Korean-American joint venture, an Aramco subsidiary and a group that also owns a shipbuilder each bring different engineering habits. The IECEx file for the IS-04Z1 is being prepared so any of them can follow the evidence behind the II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 design target.

KOSHA alongside IECEx

Korean operators generally expect domestic recognition to be addressed directly, not assumed from an international certificate alone. KOSHA recognition and KC radio approval are in progress alongside IECEx; none is complete.

Very large single sites

Tank farms and process blocks cover large areas. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift outdoors, and IP68 sealing and rugged build cover humid summers and cold winters.

Hydrogen present in many units

Treating and conversion loops use hydrogen, so IIC is the gas group that matters. The Zone 1 design target covers it, subject to the final certificate and the site's own classification.

A common management pattern

All four will want devices enrolled, policy-controlled and retired cleanly. Android Enterprise with EMM and MDM, camera policy and remote wipe fit the way these groups already manage fleets.

How work is organised

Turnaround cycles, contractors and rounds

Refineries here run continuously on shift rotas, with operators on defined rounds and permit-to-work controlling maintenance. Large units come down for planned shutdowns, with contractor numbers rising sharply for the duration, and trade press reports shutdowns of individual crude and cracker units lasting about forty days. Because the four sites operate independently, a contractor working a turnaround at one will meet a different gate process, different permit software and a different device rule at the next. A handset plan has to be repeatable but adjustable site by site.

Operations01

Process rounds

An operator logs readings, photographs equipment and calls the control room in one device, instead of a radio, camera and paper sheet.

Turnaround02

Contractor fleet

A maintenance contractor enrols a batch of devices for a shutdown and retires them at the end, with the operator able to wipe any unit remotely.

Terminals03

Jetty and tank-farm checks

Terminal staff record positions and photographs along long routes, in wind and salt air, without returning to a safe area.

Approvals and access

What the refiners will ask a supplier for

Each company's approval route is internal. We do not describe any of them beyond what is generally true, and we will not name a programme we cannot verify. For each site, ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams for the current requirements in writing.

Certificate
IECEx Certificate of Conformity, in progress and not issued.
Korean position
KOSHA recognition and KC radio approval, both in progress.
Operator listing
Entry on each operator's own equipment list, which follows certification.
Supply route
A Korea-registered partner able to hold the documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for oil and gas use in South Korea yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and certification, including IECEx and KOSHA recognition, is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Is IECEx alone enough for a Korean refinery?

IECEx is the usual technical basis, but Korean operators generally expect KOSHA recognition to be addressed too. Ask each operator what it requires.

Do the four refiners share one vendor approval?

No. They are separately owned companies, and approval at one does not carry to another.

Is there upstream oil and gas work in South Korea?

Very little; the sector is mostly refining, storage and terminals, together with the shipyards that build gas carriers and offshore units. See the shipbuilding page for those.
