One specification across old and new trains
Existing trains and the expansion trains may be classified differently in detail. A target of Zone 1, gas group IIC and T4 is set at the demanding end so one issued device follows a technician across both.
An explosion proof mobile phone for QatarEnergy LNG at Ras Laffan, Qatar, has to suit a plant that is organised as trains, a tank farm and a port, with crews who move between all three. This page looks at that structure and at what the IS-04Z1 is designed to do in it. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification and vendor documentation in progress
QatarEnergy LNG operates the liquefaction trains at Ras Laffan, which public sources put at 14 trains and about 77 million tonnes a year of capacity. The North Field East expansion is adding four mega trains of 8 million tonnes a year each, and a North Field South phase follows, so the operator is running a mature plant and commissioning new capacity on the same site. Each train takes North Field gas, removes acid gas and water, liquefies it at about minus 160 degrees Celsius and sends it to tank. Cargoes leave from the LNG berths in the port. This page deals with the operator's own trains and berths. The wider city, with GTL and the condensate refinery, is covered on the Ras Laffan page.
The trains are alike, but the work around them differs by train, berth and project. Four requirements recur.

Cryogenic areas mean insulated gloves. A handset that cannot be worked while gloved is left in a pocket. Evaluation crews should test glove handling at the cold box, and we would rather hear the result before a fleet decision.
A multi-train operator has a large workforce on a shared network. Android Enterprise with the existing MDM console lets telecoms enrol units, push applications and set camera policy centrally.
Cargo transfer is timed. IP68 sealing copes with spray and washdown, and the camera and call functions cover the check-and-report tasks that currently use a radio and a separate permitted camera.
LNG plants are run train by train. Planned turnarounds are staged, so most trains are producing while one is down.
The operator reports a cold-box anomaly while still at the location. One handset takes the photograph, adds a position and calls the panel operator.
The jetty head is a long way from the control building. A handset that survives spray lets the loading team document connections and confirm readiness without a separate camera.
Teams walk a new train recording outstanding items. A shared, managed device lets each item carry a photograph and a location rather than a paper tag number.
No. It is pre-launch, with a Q4 2026 launch date and certification in progress. The operator's engineering and HSE review follows the certificates, and nothing has been issued.
A certificate sets the permitted area by zone, gas group and temperature class. Cold service is a separate question of materials and handling. Test glove use and cold exposure on your own plant before committing.
GTL, the condensate refinery, helium and the port as a whole are covered on the Ras Laffan page. This page concerns the liquefaction operator's own trains and berths.
Yes. The device enrols in existing MDM consoles, so groups can be set by train, shift or contractor, with camera and application policy applied to each.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Qatar. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
