Group IIB and IIC in one plant
Ethylene falls in group IIB and hydrogen in IIC. The ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 covers both, which matters when a technician moves from a cracker to a hydrogen-bearing unit.
An explosion proof mobile phone for petrochemical and heavy industry sites in Qatar has to handle gas and dust together: ethylene and hydrogen on one side, polymer powder, urea and alumina on the other. This page looks at the plants in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan and what the IS-04Z1 is designed to do there. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx and MOCI programme in progress
Qatar's downstream industry is concentrated at Mesaieed Industrial Area, with processing at Ras Laffan alongside. At Mesaieed, QAPCO makes ethylene and low density polyethylene, Q-Chem produces polyethylene and normal alpha olefins, Qatar Vinyl Company runs a chlor-alkali and vinyl chain, QAFAC makes methanol and MTBE, and QAFCO makes ammonia and urea. Qatar Steel and Qatalum add direct reduction and aluminium smelting. What binds this group together is the dust. Polyethylene resin, urea, alumina and coke are all handled as powders, pellets or granules, and each needs its own dust assessment next to the flammable gas assessment. Site-level detail is on the Mesaieed page and Ras Laffan page.
A device chosen only for gas is wrong in a bagging hall, and one chosen only for dust is wrong at a cracker. These are the requirements that decide a petrochemical specification.

Fine polyethylene powder can be ignitable in air. The Zone 21 design target is aimed at the silo, conveyor and bagging areas, subject to each plant's dust classification.
Product is washed off equipment at the end of a task. IP68 sealing keeps powder out of the ports and allows the unit to be rinsed.
Several operators share Mesaieed's roads and permits. Android Enterprise lets each manage its own enrolment, camera policy and wipe without sharing an administrator.
Crackers, polymer lines and fertiliser trains run for long periods between planned shutdowns, which are the busiest time for contractors.
An inspector photographs a spill and records its location. One specification covers a reactor deck and a bagging line, so the inspector does not swap devices.
Operators check conveyors and towers where product dust builds up. A sealed handset can be washed and does not need protection from the dust.
A technician works in radiant heat near reducing gas or alumina handling, and reports faults from the location rather than from a cabin.
No. It is pre-launch, with a Q4 2026 launch date and certification in progress. Nothing has been issued, and each producer decides on its own review.
The design target is Zone 21 dust, and the plant's own dust classification decides where it applies. Dust certification is part of the programme in progress.
No. They are different protection concepts. The IS-04Z1 is designed to Ex ib, intrinsic safety, which limits circuit energy rather than containing an explosion.
Read the page for your own site: QAFCO for fertiliser, Mesaieed for the wider industrial area, or Ras Laffan for the gas processing side.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Qatar. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
