Explosion proof mobile phone for LNG and gas in Qatar

An explosion proof mobile phone for LNG and gas in Qatar has to follow the gas itself: from platforms over the North Field, through subsea lines to Ras Laffan, and out again as LNG, pipeline gas and gas-to-liquids products. This page maps that chain and shows where the IS-04Z1 is designed to be used along it. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone along Qatar's gas chain

The North Field is the largest non-associated gas field in the world and Qatar is among the leading LNG exporters. The gas is produced on offshore platforms and sent by pipeline to Ras Laffan on the north-east coast, roughly 80 km from Doha. There it is split between liquefaction trains, gas-to-liquids plants, a pipeline that carries gas to the UAE and Oman, and domestic supply. Each link is a different employer with a different procedure, which is why the sector needs a page of its own: the gas hazard is similar throughout, but the access rules, shift patterns and contractor populations are not. The company pages for QatarEnergy LNG and QatarEnergy go deeper on the two largest operators.

What the gas chain asks of a handset

The same gas family appears at every stage, but the working conditions change completely between a platform, a liquefaction train and a GTL unit.

Methane is group IIA, hydrogen is not

Most hydrocarbon gas on the chain is gas group IIA. Hydrogen and syngas in GTL and hydrogen systems are IIC. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is set for the strictest group so one device can cover the whole chain.

Sour and treated gas

Acid gas removal and sulphur handling mean hydrogen sulphide is present in parts of the plant. A handset does not detect it. Bluetooth pairing with a personal detector keeps the detector the site requires in the loop.

Cold service next to Gulf heat

LNG storage and cold boxes sit in a coastal climate that passes 45 degrees Celsius. The sealing and rugged build are specified for the climate. Cold-area handling with heavy gloves is something to test locally.

A fleet across several employers

Gas workers may be employed by an operator, a GTL company or a contractor. Android Enterprise lets each manage its own fleet on its own console, with camera and application policy set separately.

How work is organised

Shifts, projects and approval across Qatar's gas sector

Gas plants run continuously, so most routine work is shift based, and the largest changes in headcount come from projects and shutdowns.

Platform rotations
Offshore crews work set periods, then return ashore. A handset has to survive the whole rotation.
Train rounds
Field operators walk a train, reporting by radio today. A handset adds photographs and positions to the report.
Expansion construction
The North Field expansion places a large contractor group alongside live plant, which is the main driver for central enrolment.
Vendor approval
Each operator has its own process. Ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams for what applies, because we do not describe programmes we have not verified.
National conformity
MOCI conformity and CRA type approval are in the launch programme and have not been granted.
Use cases · LNG and gas

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Offshore01

Platform inspection round

An operator checks a production platform before the vessel returns. Photographs and positions go onto one record, and the next crew reads it.

Onshore02

Gas receiving and treatment

Operators move between inlet facilities and treatment units, and a single handset replaces the radio and the separate request for a camera permit.

Marine03

LNG berth readiness checks

The loading team confirms connections and records conditions with the vessel alongside, with the phone rinsed down along with the equipment afterwards.

Questions · LNG and gas

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for Qatar LNG use yet?

No. It is pre-launch, with a Q4 2026 launch date. IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are in progress and nothing has been issued. Operators follow the certificate with their own review.

Does one device cover both offshore platforms and onshore trains?

That is the design intent, with a Zone 1, Ex ib IIC T4 target. Whether it fits a specific area depends on the plant's classification drawings and the issued certificate.

Does the phone work on pipeline and subsea facilities?

It is a handset for people, not a sensor. It is designed for workers visiting classified areas, including pumping and metering stations, rather than for fixed monitoring.

How is the page's scope different from the Ras Laffan page?

This page covers the whole gas chain and its operators. The Ras Laffan page concentrates on the industrial city, its berths and the classified units inside it.
