Built for local conditions

Built for Omani conditions

Oman puts three very different environments on one purchase order: dry interior heat, humid coastal industry, and the Dhofar monsoon. A device specified for only one of them will disappoint somebody.

For evaluators in Oman, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Interior heat and open plant; The khareef, and the coast generally; Sour service in the south; Distance between everything; Dust, sand and thermal plant; Arabic, English and a managed fleet.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Interior heat and open plant

Summer in the interior sits well above 45 °C with no shade near a wellhead. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the temperature class on the certificate is the figure your technical safety engineer checks.

The khareef, and the coast generally

From June to September the Dhofar monsoon leaves Salalah in persistent damp and fog, while Sohar and Sur run humid and salt laden all year. A rugged build is aimed at humidity and salt, and IP68 covers the washdown.

Sour service in the south

Harweel and the associated gas developments run with hydrogen sulphide, so detection is already on the belt. Bluetooth pairing keeps a personal gas detector and the handset working together rather than occupying two hands.

Distance between everything

A station in Block 6 can be hours from the nearest stores. A 4,000 mAh battery specified for a full shift and a sealed body that does not need opening are what keep a unit in service between logistics runs.

Dust, sand and thermal plant

Steam generation, polymer handling and desert operation put Zone 21 next to Zone 1 across the interior. The device is designed for both, so one specification covers a field and its processing facilities.

Arabic, English and a managed fleet

Android 16 runs the interface in either language and enrols into your EMM or MDM platform, so a largely Omani workforce and an expatriate contractor crew can be issued the same build under the same policy.

Approvals in Oman

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

Omani hazardous-area reviews start from an IECEx Certificate of Conformity. Product conformity is handled by MOCIIP, and the radio needs TRA type approval and an import permit applied for by an Omani supplier. All of it forms part of the launch programme and none of it is complete.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

Two things have to be true before a handset can legitimately be imported and used. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, through its standards and metrology directorate, handles product conformity for regulated goods entering Oman. Separately, radio equipment must be type approved by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, and shipments need a TRA import permit to clear customs, applications an Omani registered supplier makes rather than an overseas manufacturer. Underneath both sits the IECEx Certificate of Conformity. None of the three has been issued.

The second gate is the one that surprises new entrants. Since July 2021 the Ministry of Energy and Minerals has required an active certificate under the Joint Supplier Registration System from any supplier bidding to an Omani oil and gas operator, and JSRS registration is the prerequisite for becoming a PDO vendor at all. In-Country Value weighting sits on top and shapes the award. The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority enforces fire safety at the facility, setting the site rules a device lives inside without ever approving the device itself.

Use cases · Oman

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Oman includes: Station and well rounds at Yibal and Fahud; Steam and polymer plant at Qarn Alam and Mukhaizna; Train and jetty work at Qalhat, Sur; Turnaround scopes at Sohar and Duqm.

Interior upstream01

Station and well rounds at Yibal and Fahud

An operator covering a route between wellheads, manifolds and a production station needs to log a reading, photograph a defect and reach the control room without carrying three separate items. Four-constellation GNSS pins a position on the record where the landscape gives no reference.

Enhanced recovery02

Steam and polymer plant at Qarn Alam and Mukhaizna

Thermal and chemical recovery facilities combine hot surfaces, hydrocarbon vapour and heavy maintenance traffic. An enrolled handset that carries the permit, the isolation record and the photograph keeps a job moving without a return trip to the office.

LNG03

Train and jetty work at Qalhat, Sur

Liquefaction trains, tankage and a loading jetty are classified areas with constant marine interface. A device that takes a washdown, holds a call from a berth and photographs a damaged coupling beats a radio that only talks.

Refining and ports04

Turnaround scopes at Sohar and Duqm

A shutdown at Sohar or Duqm brings in a contractor population issued equipment for the duration of the job. Central enrolment and remote wipe make a fleet of loaned devices auditable when the crew demobilises.

How to buy · Oman

How to evaluate and buy in Oman

Launch is Q4 2026. The steps below let an Omani technical evaluation, the JSRS and vendor registration work, and our certification programme all advance together instead of queueing.

  1. 01

Send the area classification and the operator

Give us the zone, gas group and temperature class for the areas a device would enter, and the operator or concession you work under. We will say plainly whether the certification timetable meets your date.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and certificate schedule

You receive the full specification and a written schedule of the certifications in progress with target dates, which is enough for a technical safety engineer to begin an equipment selection case.

  3. 03

Trial a unit with your own crews

Evaluation units will be offered to Omani operators and contractors for handling, glove and enterprise-management trials in safe areas, moving into classified-area pilots once the certificate exists.

  4. 04

Supply through a JSRS registered Omani partner

Volume supply is planned through a partner holding an active JSRS certificate and In-Country Value standing, because that is what the operators require. Evaluation quantities can be supplied directly meanwhile.

Questions · Oman

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Oman?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Oman →
Can we order a flameproof mobile phone from SAMS in Oman now?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch with a Q4 2026 launch date, and IECEx, ATEX and the Omani conformity and type approval steps are all still running. We will not supply a unit into a classified area before the certificate covering it has been issued.

What is the price of an intrinsically safe phone in Oman?

We publish no figure while certification is in progress, because quoting one would imply a certainty that does not exist yet. Send the quantity, the sites and the timing and we will give you pre-launch pricing on request.

Do we need a JSRS certificate to buy one?

Not to evaluate a device or receive documentation. It becomes decisive when a supplier bids to an Omani oil and gas operator, because an active JSRS certificate has been a requirement for bidding since July 2021 and is the prerequisite for PDO vendor registration.

Which zones and gas groups is it designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21, gas and dust, with an ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. NEC 500 Class I Division 1 is being pursued in parallel, which matters where an Omani project has been written to the American code.

Will it cope with the khareef and with coastal salt?

That is what a rugged build and IP68 sealing are for, and it is one of the reasons we would rather place an evaluation unit in Salalah or Sohar than argue the point from a datasheet.

Is it suitable for sour gas areas?

The certification defines where a device may be carried by zone, gas group and temperature class, not by which gas is present. For hydrogen sulphide areas the practical benefit is Bluetooth pairing with a personal gas detector.

Does it support Arabic?

Yes. Android 16 runs the interface in Arabic or English on the same handset and the manual will be issued in both. Your own field applications keep whatever languages they already use.

How are repairs and battery replacement handled?

An Ex certified device cannot be opened on site or serviced by a general workshop without invalidating its certification. Repair and battery replacement run through SAMS and the Omani partner it is appointing, with spares held within reach of Muscat and the interior.
