Deep-water port
The port has deep-water jetties able to handle very large vessels, including Valemax ore carriers.
Sohar is the capital of Al Batinah North Governorate and hosts SOHAR Port and Freezone, a deep-sea industrial port on the Gulf of Oman. Government development plans for Sohar include more than 5 billion US dollars of investment in the steel industry, which adds heavy-industry maintenance work to the port's chemical and fuel sites. Distribution partners for Sohar are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Sohar has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Sohar. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The Sohar Aluminium smelter has a capacity of roughly 390,000 tonnes a year with its own power plant, so construction and maintenance contractors are present.
SOHAR Port is described as handling more than one million tonnes of sea cargo a week and around 3,500 ship calls a year, so jetty and yard traffic is continuous.
The first lease at the new port was signed with Sohar Refinery in 2003, and the free zone itself was established in 2010, so many plants are of 2000s to 2010s vintage.
Hafeet Rail is building a 238 km line to connect the port with the UAE national network, and its first track shipment arrived through the Steinweg general cargo terminal.
C. Steinweg Oman holds the concession for dry bulk, break-bulk, roll-on/roll-off and container stuffing operations in the port, so cargo-side contractors work under a separate terminal operator.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Sohar. Sohar's port and free zone host a refinery, an aluminium smelter and mining-related operations, with international contractors present across them. Reviewers would expect to see ATEX and IECEx evidence for a handheld, and a dual route lets one file serve several operators. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet, as certification is in progress.
A distributor for Sohar would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, port liquid bulk handling, fuel and chemical storage, industrial plant utilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Sohar.
Radio equipment sold or used in Oman normally needs Telecommunications Regulatory Authority type approval or a declaration of conformity route, with a TRA label. Requirements change, so check the authority's current rules or ask your local importer before shipment.
Typically the tenant or terminal operator, not the port authority alone. Dry-bulk and general cargo areas run under a terminal concession, while refinery and chemical tenants have their own HSE rules. Confirm the approval route with the site operator before shipping any device.
Summers are extremely hot, with a record of 50.8 C, and rainfall is low. Check the certified ambient range, keep devices out of direct sun and charge only in a safe area. IP68 helps with dust but is not explosion protection.
