Large industrial base
The Sohar Aluminium smelter has a capacity of roughly 390,000 tonnes a year with its own power plant, so construction and maintenance contractors are present.
The port and free zone were planned around three industrial clusters, logistics, metals and petrochemicals, and a food cluster with an agro-bulk terminal was added later, giving mixed gas and dust hazards. Refining, metals and iron-ore processing are clustered there, which creates Zone 1 and Zone 21 work in process plants and bulk-liquid storage. Distribution partners for Sohar are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Sohar has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Sohar. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
The Sohar Aluminium smelter has a capacity of roughly 390,000 tonnes a year with its own power plant, so construction and maintenance contractors are present.
Summers are very hot on this stretch of the Gulf of Oman coast, so handset heat tolerance matters for outdoor rounds.
SOHAR Port is described as handling more than one million tonnes of sea cargo a week and around 3,500 ship calls a year, so jetty and yard traffic is continuous.
The first lease at the new port was signed with Sohar Refinery in 2003, and the free zone itself was established in 2010, so many plants are of 2000s to 2010s vintage.
Hafeet Rail is building a 238 km line to connect the port with the UAE national network, and its first track shipment arrived through the Steinweg general cargo terminal.
C. Steinweg Oman holds the concession for dry bulk, break-bulk, roll-on/roll-off and container stuffing operations in the port, so cargo-side contractors work under a separate terminal operator.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Sohar. Around the refinery and port liquid bulk areas, explosion-proof is everyday language. Flameproof Ex d is a protection concept for fixed equipment, while a handheld used on terminal and refinery rounds suits intrinsic safety better. The IS-04Z1 is designed on intrinsic safety, not as a flameproof enclosure.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Sohar yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, port liquid bulk handling, fuel and chemical storage, industrial plant utilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Sohar.
Radio equipment sold or used in Oman normally needs Telecommunications Regulatory Authority type approval or a declaration of conformity route, with a TRA label. Requirements change, so check the authority's current rules or ask your local importer before shipment.
Typically the tenant or terminal operator, not the port authority alone. Dry-bulk and general cargo areas run under a terminal concession, while refinery and chemical tenants have their own HSE rules. Confirm the approval route with the site operator before shipping any device.
Summers are extremely hot, with a record of 50.8 C, and rainfall is low. Check the certified ambient range, keep devices out of direct sun and charge only in a safe area. IP68 helps with dust but is not explosion protection.
