Explosion proof mobile phone for Oman LNG's Qalhat plant

Oman LNG liquefies the country's gas at Qalhat, near Sur on the eastern coast, and an explosion proof mobile phone for that plant has to handle Zone 1 hydrocarbon gas, a humid marine setting and a continuous operation that rarely stops. The IS-04Z1 is designed for the gas atmospheres of liquefaction, storage and loading in Oman. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified at Oman LNG's Qalhat plant

The Qalhat complex is three liquefaction trains with a combined capacity of 10.4 million tonnes a year: trains 1 and 2 of 3.55 million tonnes each, and the Qalhat LNG train of 3.30 million tonnes, which was integrated into Oman LNG in 2013. They sit on the coast near Sur, with storage tanks and a loading jetty serving LNG carriers. Feed gas arrives by pipeline, is treated, chilled and sent to tankage as liquid at around minus 160 degrees; a boil-off and flare system handles what cannot be stored. Methane is gas group IIA, but the refrigeration circuits and associated hydrocarbons widen the picture, and the classification is set unit by unit by the operator. What matters for a handset is that operators and maintenance crews spend most of the shift in a classified area that is in open air, hot and salty, and one that cannot easily be shut down.

Plant and marine facilities

Liquefaction trains
Three trains at Qalhat, each with feed treatment, chilling and refrigerant circuits.
LNG storage tanks
Large tankage with vapour handling at roof level.
Loading jetty and berths
Transfer of LNG to carriers; ship-shore interface under terminal rules.
Flare and boil-off systems
Relief and vapour recovery equipment around the plant.
Utilities and power
Gas turbines, boilers and seawater systems supporting the trains.
Control rooms and offices
Safe-area buildings; the charging point for a handset.

Where a handset is used

Process units
Zone 1 and Zone 2 around pumps, compressors, exchangers and sample points.
Tank farm
Roof and bund areas with vapour and relief equipment.
Jetty head
Loading arms, hoses and the ship interface, with terminal rules on portable electronics.
Pipe racks
Long outdoor routes between trains, tanks and the jetty.
Turnaround areas
Scaffold, hot work and confined space around a train in shutdown.
Workshops and stores
Mostly safe-area; classified at the edges.
Built for local conditions

What a liquefaction plant does to a handset

Qalhat is an engineering site where the equipment is expected to run for years between full shutdowns. A handset has to be as dull and dependable as the plant it serves.

Battery4,000 mAh

OSAndroid 16

Salt and humidity off the Gulf of Oman

A coastal plant is damp and salty all year, not seasonally. IP68 sealing and a rugged build are meant for that, and the washdown that follows a salt spray.

Rounds across a large footprint

Trains, tanks and the jetty are separated by pipe racks and roads. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift because there is no charging inside the boundary.

Evidence at the jetty

A disputed quantity, a damaged hose or a coupling that does not seat has to be evidenced immediately. A 50 MP camera and four-constellation GNSS put a photograph and a position on the record from the berth.

Controlled use of the camera

Photography on an LNG site is controlled. Android 16 with Android Enterprise lets the camera be restricted by policy rather than removed from the handset.

Arabic and English on one build

A largely Omani operating workforce and expatriate contractors can be issued the same device and policy; the interface runs in either language.

Use cases · Oman LNG

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Operations01

Train rounds and defect reporting

An outside operator covering a train logs readings, photographs a leaking seal and reaches the control room without stopping to use a fixed terminal. Position and photograph travel together to the maintenance planner.

Marine02

Loading and berth work

Loading a carrier involves operations, marine and inspection staff on a jetty with constant movement. An enrolled handset gives each of them a call, a camera and the loading procedure in one device, subject to the terminal's own rules.

Turnarounds03

Planned train shutdowns

A shutdown multiplies the contractor population in a short window. Central enrolment, restricted apps and remote wipe make a fleet of lent devices auditable when the crew demobilises.

The approval path

Two gates before a phone reaches Qalhat

National conformity and Oman LNG's own vendor approval run on separate timelines, and neither is complete for the IS-04Z1.

National side

IECEx
Certificate of Conformity as the technical basis; certification is in progress.
Product conformity
Through the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, applied for by an Omani supplier.
Radio
TRA type approval and an import permit.

Operator side

Vendor review
Oman LNG's procurement and HSE teams will set the equipment submission and registration requirements; ask them directly.
JSRS and ICV
Suppliers to Omani energy operators are generally expected to hold an active JSRS certificate and show In-Country Value.
Site rules
Portable electronics, camera use and charging are governed by the plant's own permit and security rules.
Questions · Oman LNG

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 approved for Oman LNG's Qalhat plant?

No, not yet. National certification is a prerequisite for the operator's own vendor review, and neither is complete. The device is pre-launch with certification in progress ahead of Q4 2026.

Can the handset go on the loading jetty?

That is for the terminal's own rules and the area classification at the berth. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1, and whether it is allowed at a jetty head is decided by the operator after the certificate exists.

Is it designed for cryogenic temperatures?

No. The handset is carried by people, not exposed to liquefied gas, and the design target covers the ambient conditions of the plant. Contact with cryogenic equipment is outside what it is designed for.

How are units managed across a shutdown?

Android 16 with Android Enterprise enrols them into your existing MDM console, so a temporary crew can be issued units under a restricted policy and the units wiped on demobilisation.
