Explosion proof mobile phone for Petroleum Development Oman sites

PDO produces most of Oman's oil and gas from the Block 6 concession in the interior, and anyone buying an explosion proof mobile phone in Oman for that estate is buying for wellheads, gathering stations and processing plants spread over a very large desert area. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there, and for PDO's own engineering and In-Country Value review, not national conformity alone. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What an explosion proof mobile phone meets across PDO's fields

Petroleum Development Oman is a joint venture between the Government of Oman and international partners, and it works the Block 6 concession across the interior rather than from one site. The fields that matter to a handset are a long list rather than a single plant: Fahud in the north, Yibal and its newer sour Khuff development, Nimr and Marmul in the south, Qarn Alam with its thermal recovery, and Harweel with sour gas and miscible gas injection. Crews reach them by driving for hours, and camps and offices, where a handset is charged, sit outside the classified boundary.

Fields and areas

Fahud
Northern hub and long-standing operational base for the interior.
Yibal
One of the oldest large fields, now with the Yibal Khuff sour oil and gas project.
Marmul
Southern heavy oil with polymer enhanced recovery.
Qarn Alam
Thermal recovery with steam generation beside the production plant.
Nimr
Southern production handling very large volumes of produced water.
Harweel
Sour gas and miscible gas injection in the deep south.

Classified units and areas

Wellheads and manifolds
Outdoor Zone 1 or Zone 2 around glands, sample points and vents, thousands of them.
Gathering stations
Separation, pumping and metering under a mix of open and enclosed areas.
Gas-oil separation plants
Large inventory of hydrocarbon gas and liquid; the heart of the classified boundary.
Sour processing
Hydrogen sulphide service where personal gas detection is carried as standard.
Steam and polymer plant
Hot surfaces beside hydrocarbon vapour, and dust where polymer powder is handled.
Camps and offices
Outside the classified boundary; the place a handset is charged and issued.
Built for local conditions

What the interior does to a handset

Classification decides whether the phone may be carried. After that the desert decides how long it lasts. These are the conditions that come up when PDO-facing engineers talk about field equipment.

Heat with no shade at the wellhead

Interior summers run well above 45 °C and a wellhead offers no cover. The marking target for the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the temperature class on the certificate is the number your technical safety engineer checks against the area classification.

Fine dust and sand on every seam

Open ground, unpaved access roads and heavy vehicle traffic keep dust in the air. IP68 sealing and a Zone 21 design target are meant for exactly that, so a handset that has been in a wellsite for a week still works on the next one.

Rounds measured in hours of driving

A station can be a long way from the nearest stores or a charging point you can use inside the boundary. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift, and a sealed body that is never opened in the field is what keeps it in service between logistics runs.

Contractors under one policy

Drilling, workover and shutdown crews arrive from many companies. Android 16 with Android Enterprise enrols a lent fleet into your existing MDM console, restricts the camera where photography is controlled and lets a unit be wiped when the contract ends.

Use cases · PDO

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Production01

Station and wellhead rounds

An operator working a route between wellheads, manifolds and a production station has to take a reading, photograph a defect and reach the control room without carrying three separate items. One device with a coordinate and a photograph on the same record replaces the paper round sheet and a handheld radio.

Projects02

Sour gas and central processing work

Large processing facilities such as the Yibal Khuff plant bring commissioning, inspection and construction crews into the same classified area as operations. A handset carrying the permit and a Bluetooth link to a gas detector keeps entry jobs moving.

Contractors03

Drilling campaigns and field shutdowns

A rig takes its classified area with it, and the crew often works to a permit issued that morning. Enrolled devices carry the permit, the site directory and the daily report, and can be locked to the applications PDO and the contractor have approved.

The approval path

Two gates before a phone reaches a PDO site

National conformity and PDO's own vendor approval run on separate timelines, and neither is complete for the IS-04Z1.

What the national side needs

Ex basis
An IECEx Certificate of Conformity, which is the technical evidence the review is built on. Certification is in progress.
Product conformity
Handled in Oman through the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion; applied for by an Omani supplier.
Radio approval
TRA type approval and an import permit for the handset, again applied for locally.

What the operator side asks

JSRS registration
A supplier bidding to an Omani oil and gas operator is expected to hold an active Joint Supplier Registration System certificate, which is the entry point to PDO as a vendor.
In-Country Value
Scoring favours genuine Omani presence and local employment, which is why volume supply is planned through a registered Omani partner.
Engineering and HSE review
Ask PDO's contracts, telecoms and HSE teams for the submission format they expect.
Questions · Petroleum Development Oman

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 approved for PDO sites?

No, not yet. National certification is a prerequisite for PDO's own vendor review, and neither is complete. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, with IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch.

Does the handset work in sour gas areas?

Certification defines where a device may be carried by zone, gas group and temperature class, not by which gas is present. For hydrogen sulphide service the practical benefit is Bluetooth pairing with a personal gas detector, so the detector and the handset work together instead of occupying two hands.

What happens when a unit is damaged in the desert?

A device holding an Ex certificate cannot be opened on site or repaired by a general phone workshop without invalidating it. Repair and battery replacement run through SAMS and the Omani partner it is appointing, with spares held within reach of Muscat and the interior.
