Coastal humidity and salt
All three clusters sit on the coast. IP68 sealing and a rugged build are specified for that combination.
Oman's downstream sector is concentrated on the coast: liquefaction at Qalhat, refining and petrochemicals at Sohar, and a new refinery at Duqm. An explosion proof mobile phone for LNG and downstream operations in Oman has to handle Zone 1 gas, hydrogen service and salt air. The IS-04Z1 is designed for those conditions. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Three coastal clusters carry the sector. At Qalhat near Sur, Oman LNG runs three liquefaction trains of 10.4 million tonnes a year in total, with storage and a loading jetty (see explosion proof phone for Oman LNG). At Sohar, OQ's refinery was expanded from 116,000 to 198,000 barrels a day, alongside aromatics and Liwa Plastics (see explosion proof phone for OQ). At Duqm, the OQ8 refinery is a joint venture of OQ and Kuwait Petroleum International, supplied with crude through the Ras Markaz storage terminal. The hazards differ between them: methane and refrigerants at LNG, hydrogen and hot residue at refining, solvent vapour at petrochemicals. Work is organised around planned turnarounds on each train or unit, with contractor numbers peaking in short windows, and around continuous rounds the rest of the time. A handset therefore has to suit both a permanent operating crew and a temporary one issued equipment for a scope. Staff at all three clusters work in Arabic and English, and many contractors rely on one or the other.
The sector is capital-heavy and highly regulated, and the same turnaround cycle that governs the plant governs the equipment.

Hydrogen at refining is gas group IIC, so the II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 marking target is set at that level and covers LNG and refining with one specification.
Planned shutdowns multiply contractor traffic in short windows. Enrolling units centrally and wiping them afterwards avoids paper sign-out.
A 4,000 mAh battery specified for a full shift matters when charging is outside the boundary.
One build for a largely Omani workforce and expatriate contractors under one policy.
Photography is controlled at refineries and LNG plants. The camera can be restricted by MDM policy instead of the handset being issued without one.
Operators and inspectors cover trains, tanks and a loading jetty. A device with a camera, position and call on one unit settles a disputed quantity or a damaged coupling immediately.
Inspection crews move between hydrogen service and hydrocarbon units. One enrolled handset replaces a radio, camera and paper sheet.
New plants bring large commissioning crews. Central enrolment lets a project issue and recover a fleet without separate set-up per contractor.
Each operator runs its own review inside the national framework.
No. The device is pre-launch and certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
It is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust with a marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, covering both in principle. Whether it covers a given area depends on your classification and the issued certificate.
Hydrogen is gas group IIC, the strictest case, so designing to it covers the milder groups as well.
Not by design. The same Zone 1 and Zone 21 target and the same MDM enrolment apply at Qalhat, Sohar and Duqm. What changes between sites is the area classification, the permit system and the operator's own equipment review.
It is designed for that kind of classified area. OQ8 and its contractors set their own requirements, and we make no claim about them.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Oman. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
