Explosion proof mobile phone for ports and logistics in Jordan

Aqaba is Jordan's only sea outlet, so any explosion proof mobile phone in Jordan's ports and logistics sector is really a question about one stretch of Red Sea coast. Within the Aqaba Special Economic Zone, separate terminals handle containers, phosphate, fertilisers and potash, oil, LPG, LNG and grain. Different operators run them, and each has different hazards. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone requirements across the Aqaba terminals

The zone's official infrastructure list covers a new multi-purpose port, a container terminal run by APM Terminals, an industrial port for fertilisers, potash, sulphur and liquid ammonia, a phosphate port operated by JPMC, an oil port, an LPG port, the Al-Sheikh Sabah LNG berth, and passenger and grain facilities. The industrial port is rated at about 10 million tonnes a year, the phosphate port at about 6 million. Hazards are mixed: flammable gas and liquids at the oil, LPG and LNG berths, ammonia and sulphur on the industrial port, and bulk-cargo dust at the phosphate and potash handling areas, subject to each operator's classification study.

Terminals and areas

Container terminal
Mostly safe-area, with dangerous goods yards.
Industrial port
Sulphur, ammonia, fertiliser and potash handling.
Phosphate port
Dry bulk jetty with dust and spillage control.
Oil and LPG ports
Marine loading arms, pipelines and tankage.
LNG berth
Floating storage and regasification vessel.
Grain and general cargo
Mostly safe-area, with grain dust a recognised hazard.
Built for local conditions

What a Red Sea port does to a handset

Heat, salt, wind and constant vessel movement are the norm. A handset on the quay is wet more often than it is dry.

Salt spray and humidity

IP68 sealing is specified for water ingress, but salt on contacts is a maintenance routine to plan, and clean and dry procedures should be agreed.

Gas and dust on neighbouring quays

A gas hazard at the oil berth and a dust area at a bulk jetty can be a few hundred metres apart. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, so one device can cross them if each area's classification permits.

Wide quays and vessel schedules

Berth work follows ship arrival rather than the clock. A 4,000 mAh battery for a full shift and 4-constellation GNSS for yard positions suit that, and the 50 MP camera records cargo and hose condition.

Many employers on one quay

Terminal staff, agents, surveyors and contractors share the zone. Android Enterprise policy can issue devices per employer with separate application sets.

How work is organised

Berth work, yard work and tank farm work

We have not seen any terminal's rosters. In general, terminals run around the clock with shifts, ships dictate peaks, and contractors maintain jetties, conveyors and tank farms. The zone developer contracts several operators, so a handset standard is easier to agree per operator than across the whole zone. See explosion proof phone for Jordan Phosphate Mines Company and oil, gas and refining in Jordan.

Bulk01

Phosphate and fertiliser loading

Supervisors coordinate conveyors, shiploaders and surveyors, and photograph spillage or equipment faults.

Liquids02

Oil and LPG berth operations

Marine and terminal staff coordinate hose connections and valve line-ups on classified jetties.

Gas03

LNG berth support

Operators and visiting crews use one enrolled device across areas subject to a floating facility's own rules.

Approvals and vendor access

What Aqaba terminal operators would ask an equipment supplier for

Each terminal operator runs its own procurement, and we have not verified any registration process, so we describe none. Ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams for supplier requirements and its classified-area selection rules. Expect requests for the Ex certificate and marking string, ambient range, radio approval reference and service route.

The IS-04Z1 does not yet hold those. IECEx and ATEX certification are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Supply is normally expected to run through a Jordanian-registered partner; see the Jordan country page.

Questions · Ports and logistics

Frequently asked questions

Is Aqaba one operator?

No. Aqaba Development Corporation develops the zone and contracts several operators for the container, industrial, phosphate, oil, LPG and LNG facilities, each with its own procurement.

Does a container terminal need an Ex phone?

Mostly not, since most of it is outside any classified area. The need arises at dangerous-goods areas, fuel handling and the neighbouring bulk and liquid berths.

Is potash handled in the same terminal as phosphate?

The zone lists potash with fertilisers, sulphur and ammonia at the industrial port, and phosphate at the JPMC-operated phosphate port. Confirm routing with each operator.

Does the same rating cover marine work?

The design target is Zone 1 and Zone 21; vessels have their own classification and rules, and a vessel master or terminal operator decides what may be carried aboard.
