Explosion proof mobile phone for Arab Potash Company

For an explosion proof mobile phone in Jordan, Arab Potash Company is an unusual brief. Potash is made at Ghor Al-Safi from Dead Sea brine pumped in at the Lisan peninsula, concentrated in solar evaporation ponds and refined in plants that run hot leach and cold crystallisation. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms people deciding what may be carried into each part of that chain. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone requirements at the Safi works

APC's plants are at Ghor Al-Safi on the southern Dead Sea, roughly 110 km south of Amman and 200 km north of Aqaba. Brine is drawn in at the Lisan peninsula, evaporates in the ponds until carnallite settles out, and is harvested as a slurry that travels to the refinery through floating pipes. There, hot leach and cold crystallisation plants turn it into potash in standard, fine, granular and industrial grades. Potash is a mineral salt and is not normally treated as a combustible dust, so the zones that matter to a handset are more likely to come from fuel gas, fuel oil, laboratories, utilities than from the product itself. That is for APC's own area classification study to say, and this page does not pre-empt it.

What the Dead Sea does to a handset

The classification decides whether a device may be carried at all. After that, Safi decides how long it lasts.

Heat and humidity far below sea level

The works sit roughly 400 metres below sea level, and a pond dike offers no shade. The ATEX marking target for the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the temperature class and permitted ambient range on the certificate are what an instrumentation engineer checks against the area classification.

Airborne salt on every surface

Brine mist and dried salt get into seams, ports and charging contacts. IP68 sealing keeps the enclosure closed, but a salt crust on a connector is a maintenance problem in its own right, so agree a rinse and dry routine with APC before fleet roll-out and confirm material compatibility with their engineers.

Kilometres of dike and nowhere to charge

A harvesting or pump-station round covers distances that a plant operator never walks. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift, and four-constellation GNSS lets a leaking joint on a floating line be logged by coordinate on a surface with no landmarks.

One console from pond to plant

Android Enterprise enrolment gives harvesting crews, refinery operators and warehouse staff one managed profile.

How work is organised

Pond, plant and port on one process chain

A process that runs continuously is staffed in shifts and rounds, with planned stoppages bringing in contractor crews. We have not seen APC's rosters or shutdown calendar. Three very different kinds of work meet in one chain: crews moving along dikes and pumping stations, operators in plant control rooms and field areas, and warehouse and loading staff in Aqaba some 200 km away.

Ponds01

Harvesting and pumping rounds

A crew checking harvesters, booster pumps and slurry lines needs to photograph a fault, record where it is and call the control room without walking back to a safe area.

Refinery02

Plant rounds and permits

Operators in the hot leach and crystallisation plants log readings and raise defects. An enrolled device can carry the permit, the site directory and the shift log, and be limited to applications APC has approved.

Contractors03

Stoppage and expansion work

Contractor crews arrive with their own supervisors and their own phones. An operator-managed handset issued at the gate keeps site communications on a device APC can lock, wipe and audit.

Approvals and vendor access

What APC teams would ask an equipment supplier for

We have not verified APC's current vendor registration steps, so none is described here. The sensible route is to ask APC's procurement and HSE teams for their supplier requirements and the equipment selection rules for classified areas. Expect them to want the Ex certificate and its marking string, a statement of the ambient range the device is tested to, a Telecommunications Regulatory Commission type approval reference for the radio, and a service route for a certified product that cannot be opened on site.

None of that exists for the IS-04Z1 yet. IECEx, ATEX and local conformity work is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Supply into Jordan is normally expected to run through a Jordanian-registered partner, as set out on the Jordan country page. Questions · Arab Potash Company

Frequently asked questions

Does a potash works need a Zone 21 dust rated phone?

Not automatically. Potash is a salt and is not normally classed as a combustible dust, so whether any area at Safi is zoned for dust depends on APC's own classification study. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust so it can follow whichever zones the study draws.

Can it be used on the evaporation ponds?

Open ponds and dikes are usually outside any classified area, where an ordinary rugged phone would be legal. A certified handset earns its place where a round crosses from the ponds into fuel, utilities and plant areas.

How should salt contamination be handled?

Treat it as routine maintenance: rinse with clean water, dry, and inspect ports and contacts at a set interval. IP68 protects against ingress, not against crust building up on a charging contact, and APC engineers should confirm materials suit their brine.

Can we review the device before the certificate is issued?

Yes, on paper. The datasheet, the certification schedule and the MDM deployment approach can all go into an engineering review now. Nothing should enter a classified area at Safi before the certificate covering it exists.
