Explosion proof mobile phone for Jordan Phosphate Mines Company

For an explosion proof mobile phone in Jordan's phosphate sector, Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is the one buyer to understand. It mines at Al-Hasa, Al-Abiad and Eshidiya in the southern desert, operates a phosphate export port at Aqaba, and runs a chemical complex there making phosphoric acid, DAP fertiliser, sulphuric acid and aluminium fluoride. The hazardous areas, and the handset questions, differ sharply between the mines and the coast. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone requirements across JPMC sites

Al-Hasa and Al-Abiad lie about 135 km south of Amman and were opened in 1962 and 1979; Eshidiya, opened in 1989, is about 125 km north-east of Aqaba in Ma'an governorate. At all three, ore is mined in open pits and taken through crushing, screening and beneficiation. Classified areas are more likely to come from fuel used in drying and plant, workshop and fuel storage areas, and, at Aqaba, from the ammonia, sulphur and acid handling that a phosphoric acid and DAP complex involves. Which of those JPMC classifies, and to what gas group, is set by its own area study.

Operator and partners

Sole phosphate miner in Jordan; mines, Aqaba complex and Aqaba phosphate port.
Indo-Jordan Chemicals
Joint venture with Indian and Saudi partners.
Nippon Jordan Fertilizer Company
Joint venture with a Japanese consortium.
Aqaba Development Corporation
Contracts JPMC to operate the new phosphate port within the Aqaba zone.

Areas and units

Al-Hasa and Al-Abiad pits
Southern open-pit mines, long established, with plant and workshops attached.
Eshidiya mine and plant
The newest of the three, in remote desert towards the Saudi border.
Crushing, screening and beneficiation
Dusty processing areas, classified only if the study finds a hazard.
Dryers and fuel storage
Where fuel firing creates the more conventional gas hazard.
Aqaba chemical complex
Phosphoric acid, DAP, sulphuric acid and aluminium fluoride production.
Aqaba phosphate port
Dry bulk export jetty with dust control, about 6 million tonnes a year of capacity.
Offices and camps
Safe-area accommodation and administration at each site.
Built for local conditions

What the southern desert does to a handset

Three mines and a coastal chemical works make four different working environments. The device has to cope with all of them under one policy.

Distance that turns a fault into a day lost

Eshidiya is well out in the desert and the Al-Hasa pits are a long drive from Amman, so a failed handset is not a same-day swap. IP68 sealing, rugged build and a 4,000 mAh battery specified for a full shift are chosen with that in mind.

Fine dust on every working day

Ore dust works into ports and speaker grilles on a pit floor. IP68 sealing is the answer.

A pit that grows and moves

Haul roads and benches change monthly, so an old map is wrong. Four-constellation GNSS positions a defect or a haul-road hazard by coordinate and the 50 MP camera records it.

Gas and acid zones at Aqaba

The coastal complex is a different job from the pit. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, with an ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so one device can follow an operator from the mine to the process plant.

Managed from one console

Android Enterprise and MDM enrolment let JPMC apply one policy to pit crews and plant operators, in Arabic or English.

How work is organised

Pit crews, plant operators and port loaders

Mining runs on shifts across large areas with contractors present for haulage, maintenance and expansion. A press report says a rail link between the Shidiya and Hasa mines, Ghor Al-Safi and Aqaba has been announced with JPMC as a consortium member, which, if built, would add construction crews to the picture; we have not confirmed its status.

A handset that works for a pit supervisor also has to work for a process operator at Aqaba, and for a loading supervisor at the phosphate jetty. See also explosion proof phone for Aqaba ports and logistics.

Mining01

Pit and beneficiation rounds

A supervisor logs equipment condition, photographs a damaged screen deck and keeps in contact with the control room across a plant that spreads over many hectares.

Chemicals02

Aqaba complex shutdown work

A planned stoppage brings in contractors for acid, ammonia and utility work. One enrolled device carries the permit, the plant directory and the camera, and is wiped at the end of the job.

Port03

Phosphate jetty loading

Loading crews coordinate with ship agents and the terminal control room. A device that survives dust and sea air, and that can be locked down to approved applications, suits that duty.

Approvals and vendor access

What JPMC teams would ask an equipment supplier for

We have not verified JPMC's current vendor registration steps and do not describe them. Ask JPMC's procurement and HSE teams for their supplier requirements and for the equipment selection rules that apply to each classified area. Expect to be asked for the Ex certificate and marking string, the ambient range, a type approval reference for the radio, an Arabic and English manual, and a service route for a device that cannot be opened on site.

The IS-04Z1 has none of those certificates yet; IECEx and ATEX work is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Because an Ex device cannot be repaired by a general phone workshop, a Jordanian-registered partner holding spares near Amman or Aqaba is the more realistic supply route. See the Jordan country page and the mining and minerals overview.

Questions · Jordan Phosphate Mines Company

Frequently asked questions

Is phosphate dust a Zone 21 hazard?

Phosphate rock is not normally regarded as a combustible dust, so do not assume it. JPMC's own area classification study, backed by dust testing where needed, decides. The IS-04Z1 is designed for both Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust so it can follow the study either way.

Would one approval cover Al-Hasa, Eshidiya and Aqaba?

That is JPMC's decision. A company-level equipment standard would be the efficient outcome, but each site has its own classification and management, and the Aqaba complex is a different type of facility from the mines.

Is the Aqaba complex part of JPMC?

JPMC operates a chemical manufacturing complex at Aqaba, which it acquired with the former Jordan Fertilizer Company in 1986, and it operates the phosphate port there under contract to the zone developer.

What if a device fails at Eshidiya?

The service route for an Ex-certified product runs through SAMS and a partner it is appointing, not a local workshop. Agree spares held in the south and a swap procedure during evaluation, not after a failure.
