Explosion proof mobile phone for Suncor Energy sites

Suncor runs the whole chain from pit to pump, so an explosion proof mobile phone for Suncor in Canada has to make sense at very different fences: the Base Plant and Fort Hills mines north of Fort McMurray, the Firebag and MacKay River in situ plants, Syncrude’s Mildred Lake site, and the Edmonton, Sarnia and Montréal refineries. This page is for the HSE, telecoms and procurement people deciding what may be carried past those gates. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified across Suncor’s chain

Suncor began commercial oil sands mining at Base Plant in 1967, and the site still anchors the business: a mine, bitumen extraction, and an upgrader on the Athabasca River. Fort Hills sits north of Fort McMurray with its own mine and extraction plant, while Firebag and MacKay River produce bitumen in situ with steam. Suncor also operates Syncrude, so Mildred Lake is part of the same operating picture even though it is a separate facility with its own area drawings.

The classified areas follow the process. Extraction and froth treatment handle bitumen with solvent, so hydrocarbon vapour is present around the treatment vessels and tank farms. In the upgrader, cokers and hydrotreaters bring hydrogen, sour gas and hot hydrocarbons, and coke and sulphur handling add combustible dust. Out at Firebag the picture is steam generators, central processing and well pads. Downstream, the refineries add the usual process units, tank farms and loading racks. A mine pit and a haul road are mostly not classified, but the shop and the plant beside them are.

What Suncor’s mix of sites asks of a handset

One company, three kinds of site. That is the first thing to settle before a pilot, because the same device has to pass a mine-side shop, a coker and a refinery gate.

One standard across mine, in situ and refinery

A mining shift, an upgrader operator and a refinery contractor use a phone differently. A single handset enrolled through EMM and MDM can carry a different app set for each, so the fleet stays one model while the configuration follows the site.

Winter on the Athabasca

Fort McMurray cold snaps push well below minus 30 degrees Celsius. Hazardous-area equipment is assessed to a stated ambient range, and the range printed on the IS-04Z1 certificate, once issued, is the figure Suncor’s engineers would check against the January duty cycle.

Coke and sulphur dust, not only gas

A gas-only phone stops at the door of a coke or sulphur handling area. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, so one handset is intended to cover the upgrader’s gas units and its dusty ones.

Positions and photographs across a big footprint

The Base Plant and Fort Hills footprints are measured in kilometres. Four-constellation GNSS puts a coordinate on a defect report, and the 50 MP camera attaches a photograph to it, which saves a radio call describing where the problem is.

Use cases · Suncor

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Upgrading01

Coker and hydrotreater rounds

An operator on a coker or hydrotreater round walks through classified areas with a clipboard and a radio. A single enrolled handset can hold the round sheet, take a photograph of a leaking flange and call the control room without leaving the area.

In situ02

Firebag pad and plant inspections

Steam generators, central processing and spread-out well pads make for long drives between inspection points. Offline-capable apps, GNSS and a battery sized for a shift suit that pattern better than a phone left in the truck.

Refining03

Edmonton and Sarnia contractor days

A refinery contractor arrives with a permit, an isolation list and a supervisor to call. Locking the phone to the apps Suncor approves, and wiping it at demobilisation, matches how contractor equipment is controlled at the gate.

How work is organised

Turnarounds, rotations and contractors

Suncor’s big plants run on a planned cycle of shutdowns, and the people who do the work are largely contractors who arrive in numbers and leave again. A handset has to fit that rhythm.

Turnarounds
Upgraders and refineries are shut down for planned maintenance on a schedule. Large contractor crews work overlapping permits in the same classified footprint, so each phone must be issued, enrolled and returned quickly.
Rotations and camps
Many Athabasca workers are on rotation and live in camp accommodation. A phone that charges in the camp or truck and carries a full shift between charges is worth more than a larger battery that never leaves the room.
Approval route
We have not verified a specific Suncor vendor programme. Ask Suncor’s procurement and HSE teams for their equipment and technology requirements, and expect the certificate and the area classification drawings to be the starting point.
Questions · Suncor Energy

Frequently asked questions

Can Suncor buy the IS-04Z1 today?

No. The device is pre-launch, with a Q4 2026 launch, and certification through an accredited Canadian body is in progress. We will not supply a unit into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

Do Fort Hills and Base Plant need different handsets?

The design intent is one handset. What differs is the area classification at each location, which Suncor’s own engineers confirm against the certificate marking.

Does a Suncor evaluation cover Syncrude’s Mildred Lake?

Not automatically. Suncor operates Syncrude, but Mildred Lake has its own facility, area drawings and engineering review. Ask both for the requirements before assuming one answer applies.

Will it work in the Sarnia refinery as well as the oil sands?

Sarnia is an Ontario installation under that province’s safety authority, while the oil sands fall under Alberta. The device marking is the same, but the inspector’s reference differs. See the explosion proof phone guide for Canadian refining.
