Explosion proof mobile phone for Imperial Oil, Kearl & Cold Lake

Imperial Oil spans the Kearl mine, the Cold Lake thermal plants, an interest in Syncrude and refineries at Strathcona, Sarnia and Nanticoke, so an explosion proof mobile phone for Imperial in Canada has to handle a mine, steam pads and downstream plants. Imperial is majority-owned by ExxonMobil but is a separate Canadian company. This page is for the HSE and telecoms staff who decide what may be carried into its classified areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified from Kearl to Sarnia

Kearl is a surface mine and bitumen extraction operation north of Fort McMurray that ships diluted bitumen rather than upgrading on site. Cold Lake produces bitumen with steam from pads and central plants near the Alberta and Saskatchewan border. Imperial also holds an interest in Syncrude, which Suncor operates, and a downstream business in the form of the Strathcona refinery near Edmonton, Sarnia, and Nanticoke in Ontario.

Hazard types differ by site. Kearl’s froth treatment and tank areas carry solvent and hydrocarbon vapour. Cold Lake’s steam plants carry gas from fuel supply to produced fluids. Strathcona added a renewable diesel unit that started up in 2025, which adds hydrogen and renewable feedstock handling to the hydrocarbon mix. Sarnia and Nanticoke are refinery sites with the usual process units, tanks and loading racks.

What Imperial’s mix of mining, steam and refining asks of a handset

Imperial’s plants look different but the question is the same: what may a person carry past the fence, and who signs it off?

A Canadian operating company with a global parent

Imperial is majority-owned by ExxonMobil, so evaluators may reference parent group practice alongside Canadian code. Which requirements apply is Imperial’s call, and we have not seen them; ask Imperial’s procurement and HSE teams.

Cold at Kearl and Cold Lake

Winter on the Athabasca and at Cold Lake is long. The ambient range on the certificate, once issued, is what an engineer reads against January, and battery capacity in the cold belongs in the same review.

Gas, hydrogen and dust in one fleet

The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, with an IIC target that covers hydrogen. That helps a company with hydrotreating at Strathcona as well as dust-generating handling elsewhere.

English and French

Android 16 runs the interface in English and French, which is relevant for refinery contractors who move between provinces.

Use cases · Imperial

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Mining01

Kearl extraction rounds

An operator inspecting froth treatment and tank areas records readings, photographs a defect and calls the control room from one device, without taking the phone out of the area.

Thermal02

Cold Lake pad and plant rounds

Pads and central plants are far apart. A managed handset with GNSS and a full-shift battery replaces the clipboard, the radio and a paper map.

Refining03

Strathcona and Sarnia turnaround days

A turnaround brings contractors to units under overlapping permits. A handset enrolled in the site MDM carries the job pack and isolation photographs and is wiped when the contractor demobilises.

How work is organised

Rotations, turnarounds and a long supply chain

Imperial runs a bitumen chain from the north to Ontario, and handset policy has to hold for each stage.

Northern sites
Kearl and Cold Lake use rotation staffing and camps, so enrolment, charging and return all need a simple process.
Turnarounds
Strathcona, Sarnia and Nanticoke all go through planned shutdowns, with temporary contractor crews in the classified footprint.
Provincial authorities
Alberta and Ontario enforce the electrical code through different bodies, so the inspector reading the certificate depends on the province.
Approval route
We have not verified an Imperial vendor registration programme. Ask Imperial’s procurement and HSE teams.
Questions · Imperial Oil

Frequently asked questions

Does Imperial use ExxonMobil requirements?

Possibly in part, but we have not seen Imperial’s own rules. Ask Imperial which standards apply, rather than assuming parent company documents govern a Canadian site.

Does Kearl need the same handset as Cold Lake?

The design intent is one handset. Kearl is a mining and extraction site, Cold Lake is a steam site, and each has its own area drawings and engineering review.

Is the renewable diesel unit at Strathcona a different hazard?

It adds hydrogen and renewable feedstock handling to a refinery that already handles hydrocarbons. The IIC design target covers hydrogen, and the area drawings set where it applies.

Is Imperial the same as ExxonMobil Canada?

No. ExxonMobil Canada holds offshore interests such as Hibernia and Hebron. See the guide for LNG, gas and offshore in Canada.
