Wet, windy coastal weather
Kitimat has heavy rain and snow, and a jetty is open to the channel. IP68 sealing is designed for water and dust, and the certificate’s ambient range, once issued, is what an engineer checks against winter lows.
LNG Canada loaded its first export cargo from Kitimat in 2025, so an explosion proof mobile phone for LNG Canada in Canada has to suit a new liquefaction plant on the British Columbia coast: gas treating, refrigeration, LNG storage and a marine jetty. This page is for the HSE, operations and telecoms staff who decide what may be carried into those areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · CSA certification programme in progress
LNG Canada is a joint venture of Shell (40 per cent), PETRONAS (25), PetroChina (15), Mitsubishi Corporation (15) and KOGAS (5). The first phase has two liquefaction trains with a combined capacity of 14 million tonnes a year, taking gas by pipeline from north-eastern British Columbia. The terminal is at Kitimat, on the Douglas Channel, and the site was built in Haisla territory.
The hazardous areas follow the process: inlet and gas treating where acid gas and water are removed, then liquefaction trains with refrigerant systems, LNG storage tanks, a loading jetty and flare systems. Methane is gas group IIA, but refrigerant and condensate streams can bring heavier hydrocarbons, so a handset with an IIC design target covers the range. Zone 2 is common around rotating equipment, with Zone 1 where releases are more likely, so the area drawings, not a general rule, decide.
A new plant starts with a clean slate on equipment policy, which is both an opening and a discipline.

Cold-service equipment is not the same as a cold-weather device. The Ex certificate states the gas and temperature range, and any use close to cryogenic surfaces should be agreed with LNG Canada’s engineers.
An operations team works shifts, and a managed device hands over cleanly through the MDM, with the round list and photos staying with the asset.
Coordination between the plant, the jetty and the carrier is by voice and text. Android 16 and the 50 MP camera let an operator report a transfer-line fault with a photograph.
An operator on a train round reads gauges, photographs a seal weep and calls the control room, all inside the classified area.
On the jetty a technician checks arms, hoses and connections before a carrier loads. The handset carries the checklist and a photographic record.
After a train trip or planned shutdown, contractors work under permits across several units. A managed handset keeps the job pack and supervisor contact together.
Kitimat is remote, so how people arrive, stay and work shapes the handset policy.
LNG Canada describes itself as Canada’s first large-scale LNG export facility, with its first cargo loaded in 2025. Small-scale LNG plants existed before it.
Methane is IIA, but other process fluids can be in IIB or IIC. A handset designed to IIC covers the range, though the area drawings set the requirement.
Not the Ex certification. It matters for the project’s community and procurement context, which is separate.
Upstream compressor stations and plants are a different set of sites. See the guide for LNG, gas and offshore in Canada.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Canada. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
