Hydrogen and ethylene
Hydrotreaters carry hydrogen and crackers carry ethylene. The IS-04Z1 is designed to a Zone 1 IIC target, intended to cover the range of gas groups in one device.
Canada’s refining and chemicals sector is split across Sarnia, Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, Saint John and the St Lawrence, and an explosion proof mobile phone for Canada has to work in refinery units and polymer plants alike. This page is for the HSE, turnaround and telecoms staff who specify equipment for those regions. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · CSA and IECEx programme in progress
Sarnia’s Chemical Valley holds Imperial’s refinery, a Suncor refinery, NOVA Chemicals’ Corunna site and other plants, packed along the St Clair River. In Alberta, Imperial’s Strathcona and Suncor’s Edmonton refineries and Shell’s Scotford complex sit near Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, with Dow’s Fort Saskatchewan site and NOVA’s Joffre ethylene plant in the same corridor. On the Atlantic, Irving Oil’s Saint John refinery, the largest in Canada, receives crude at Canaport. In Quebec, Valero’s Jean Gaulin refinery at Lévis and Suncor’s Montréal refinery serve the St Lawrence.
A refinery is classified around distillation, conversion units, tank farms and loading racks, with hydrogen at hydrotreaters. A cracker adds ethylene, and polyethylene plants add powder and pellet dust, so Zone 21 matters as much as Zone 1. Contractors move between neighbouring plants, so one handset policy must hold across sites with separate owners. Edmonton’s Heartland has a different feel again: large plants spread over open farmland, where a round can involve a drive between units and the wind and winter cold matter as much as the hazard class.
The hazard types here are well known, so the specification debate is about duty, not novelty.

Powder and pellet handling is a dust hazard. A Zone 21 design target means one device is meant to suit both gas and dust units.
Android 16 runs in English and French, which matters for crews in Quebec and for contractors moving between provinces.
Sarnia contractors work for several operators in a week. Each operator manages enrolment under its own policy, and a handset is wiped at the end of each job.
A turnaround pulls hundreds of trades into units on overlapping permits. A managed handset carries the job pack and isolation photographs.
An operator inspecting a cracker and its polymer finishing area needs a device for both gas and dust.
Transfers at a berth are open and weather-bound, with crude arriving by ship at Canaport for Irving’s refinery and at the Valero dock on the St Lawrence. A handset with a call to the control room, GNSS and a camera supports tank and line checks.
Refining is organised around planned shutdowns and by province.
No. Each operator runs its own review and procurement, even where sites are adjacent, and an approval at one plant is not a reference the next plant is obliged to accept.
Hydrogen is IIC, ethylene is IIB, and most refinery hydrocarbons are IIA. A device designed to IIC covers the range.
Canadian code requires certification by a Standards Council of Canada accredited body. IECEx is supporting evidence.
It is designed for Zone 21 dust as well as Zone 1 gas, subject to each site’s area drawings. Polyethylene powder and pellet areas are where that second half of the design target matters most.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Canada. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
