Explosion proof mobile phone for LNG, gas and offshore in Canada

Canada’s gas and offshore sector is three separate worlds, and an explosion proof mobile phone for Canada has to work in each: Montney gas plants in British Columbia and Alberta, the LNG Canada terminal at Kitimat, and the platforms and floating vessels of the Jeanne d’Arc Basin off Newfoundland. This page is for the HSE, operations and telecoms staff who specify equipment across them. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified from Montney to the Grand Banks

Inland, the Montney formation supplies gas to processing plants and compressor stations around Dawson Creek, Grande Prairie and Fort St John, operated by producers including Tourmaline and ARC Resources. Some of that gas is sour, so a plant can combine flammable gas with toxic hydrogen sulphide. Gas then moves by pipeline to the coast, where LNG Canada at Kitimat liquefies it for export.

Offshore, the Jeanne d’Arc Basin is produced from two kinds of installation. Hibernia and Hebron stand on gravity-based structures, with Hibernia operated by Hibernia Management and Development Company and Hebron by ExxonMobil Canada. Terra Nova, operated by Suncor, and White Rose, operated by Cenovus, use floating production vessels. Topsides carry process modules, wellheads and gas handling in confined arrangements, while accommodation and the control room are outside the classified boundary.

What three environments ask of one handset

The sector shares a gas classification and almost nothing else, so the specification questions differ by region.

Cold, remote gas plants

Montney plants sit far from town, and the road to them is long. Four-constellation GNSS and a 4,000 mAh battery suit a shift away from a vehicle, and the certificate’s ambient range is the figure engineers check against January.

Wet coastal and offshore weather

Salt, spray and rain are normal at Kitimat and on the Grand Banks. IP68 sealing is designed for water and dust, though what an offshore installation allows on board is set by the operator’s safety case.

A gas group that covers the range

Methane is IIA, but refrigerants, condensate and hydrogen show up too. The IS-04Z1 is designed to a Zone 1 IIC target, so one device is meant to suit all three regions.

Managed across geography

EMM and MDM enrolment means a unit in Kitimat, a Montney plant and a St. John’s base can be configured from one console with separate profiles.

Use cases · Gas and offshore

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Gas processing01

Montney plant rounds

An operator inspecting compressors and sweetening units records readings, photographs a seal weep and calls control, without leaving the classified area.

LNG02

Jetty checks at Kitimat

A technician checks arms and connections before a carrier loads, with the checklist and photographs held on the handset.

Offshore03

Topsides round on a floating vessel

Crew change by helicopter, then rounds across process modules. Offshore use depends on the operator’s own safety case and battery rules.

How work is organised

Rotations by road, by sea and by air

Each region has a different rhythm.

Montney
Plants run with operator crews on shifts and contractors on turnarounds; many workers drive in or live in camps.
Kitimat
A remote coastal operations team on shifts, with contractors for outages.
Offshore
Crews fly out of St. John’s on rotations; the offshore regulator, the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator, is the authority for safety on the installations.
Approval route
We have not verified a specific operator programme in any of the three. Ask each operator’s procurement and HSE teams what they require.
Questions · Gas and offshore

Frequently asked questions

Does one certificate cover onshore and offshore?

The certificate describes the equipment, not the site. An offshore installation applies additional rules through its safety case, and each onshore plant has its own drawings.

Is Montney gas sour?

Some Montney pools contain hydrogen sulphide, others do not. That is a gas detection and procedure matter rather than a handset certificate one, but it is part of the area review.

Which companies operate offshore Newfoundland?

Hibernia is operated by Hibernia Management and Development Company, Hebron by ExxonMobil Canada, Terra Nova by Suncor and White Rose by Cenovus. See the pages for Cenovus Energy and Suncor.

Is IECEx enough for Canada?

IECEx is useful supporting evidence, but Canadian code expects certification by a body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada.
