Explosion proof mobile phone for Cenovus Energy, thermal in situ

Cenovus produces most of its bitumen from steam-driven wells rather than a mine, and it also operates an offshore field off Newfoundland, so an explosion proof mobile phone for Cenovus in Canada has to serve well pads at Foster Creek and Christina Lake, the Lloydminster upgrader and a floating production vessel on the Grand Banks. This page is for the HSE, operations and telecoms staff who decide what goes into those classified areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified across pads, plants and platforms

Foster Creek, near Cold Lake, and Christina Lake, south of Fort McMurray, are SAGD operations: pairs of horizontal wells, steam generation, and central processing plants that separate oil, water and gas. Cenovus completed its acquisition of MEG Energy in November 2025, which added further Christina Lake area production to the portfolio. Lloydminster, on the Alberta and Saskatchewan border, adds thermal and heavy oil operations, an upgrader and an asphalt refinery.

On the Atlantic side, Cenovus operates the White Rose field, produced through the SeaRose floating production vessel on the Jeanne d’Arc Basin, and holds an interest in Terra Nova. Those assets came with its 2021 combination with Husky Energy. Gas and dust classification therefore appears in four forms: steam generator and treater areas on SAGD plants, tank and diluent areas, upgrader units at Lloydminster, and vessel topsides at sea.

Operations and sites

Foster Creek

Christina Lake
SAGD operation south of Fort McMurray.
Lloydminster
Thermal and heavy oil production, an upgrader and an asphalt refinery.
White Rose
Offshore field produced through the SeaRose floating production vessel.
Terra Nova
Offshore field in which Cenovus holds an interest; operated by Suncor.

Classified units and areas

What a dispersed, partly offshore estate asks of a handset

Cenovus’s sites are the opposite of a single mine boundary. The pads are far apart, and the offshore asset has its own rules for what goes on board.

Long drives, few places to charge

A SAGD operator drives between pads on bush roads. A 4,000 mAh battery and four-constellation GNSS suit that pattern, because the phone has to last the round and place a defect without landmarks.

Gas at every step of the SAGD process

Steam generation, treating and tank areas all carry gas. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas, with a marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so one standard covers the plant.

A different environment at sea

On a floating vessel the topsides are classified and the accommodation is not. An enrolled handset can be set up with offshore-specific policies, though a vessel’s own safety case and battery rules still govern what is allowed on board.

One fleet across the Atlantic and the boreal forest

EMM and MDM enrolment lets Cenovus manage onshore SAGD devices and offshore ones from one console, with separate profiles for each.

Use cases · Cenovus

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

SAGD01

Pad and plant inspection loops

An operator driving between pads and a central processing plant records readings, photographs a leaking flange and reports it with a coordinate, all in one device rather than a paper sheet and a radio.

Heavy oil02

Lloydminster turnaround support

A planned shutdown of the upgrader brings contractors into classified units. A managed handset carries permits, isolation photographs and supervisor contact, and is wiped at the end of the job.

Offshore03

A rotation on White Rose

Crew change by helicopter, then twelve-hour rounds on a vessel where a call back to the control room has to work. Offshore deployment would depend on the operator’s own safety case and device rules.

How work is organised

Pads, a border upgrader and an offshore rotation

Cenovus splits its field work across three very different patterns.

Onshore rotation
SAGD plants in northern Alberta use rotation staffing and camps. Phones are handed out on arrival and returned or wiped on departure.
Turnarounds
The Lloydminster upgrader goes through planned shutdowns, with contractors and overlapping permits inside the classified footprint.
Offshore rotation
White Rose crews fly out from St. John’s, so any handset has to be cleared for the helicopter, the accommodation and the topsides under the offshore operator’s rules.
Approval route
We have not verified a Cenovus vendor registration programme. Ask Cenovus’s procurement and HSE teams what they require.
Questions · Cenovus Energy

Frequently asked questions

Is a SAGD pad classified the same way as a mine?

Not usually. SAGD risk concentrates in steam, treating and tank areas rather than a big pit, so the classified boundary is smaller but spread over more sites. Area drawings per plant decide, not the extraction method.

Does the MEG Energy acquisition change anything for a handset evaluation?

Not technically. It adds Christina Lake area sites to the estate, and each site still has its own area classification and engineering review.

Can an offshore handset be used on White Rose?

Only once certified and accepted under the operator’s own safety case. The device is designed for Zone 1, but an offshore installation sets additional rules for batteries, radios and helicopter transport. Read the guide for LNG, gas and offshore in Canada.

How is this different from Canadian Natural Resources?

Cenovus runs SAGD, Lloydminster and offshore, but not oil sands mining. See explosion proof mobile phone for Canadian Natural Resources for the mining side.
