Not every pharmaceutical site has a significant classified area. A fill-finish plant making sterile products may have very little. The classified ones are where active ingredients are made. Public sources describe the Geel plant as a raw-material (API) production site for Janssen, and API synthesis uses solvents such as alcohols and ketones, which give Zone 1 or Zone 2 gas atmospheres at reactors, centrifuges and solvent recovery, and powders that give Zone 21 or 22 dust at milling, blending and packing. These can be a few metres apart.
The extra layer is GMP. A handset carried into a controlled area must be cleanable and must not shed particles, and the site decides what may enter. That is a separate requirement from the Ex rating: a certified device is not automatically accepted into a cleanroom, and the page does not claim it is. Wallonia adds chemical works at Jemeppe-sur-Sambre and Feluy, covered on the country page, and Evonik's Antwerp plants are in the Antwerp cluster.
The design target is Zone 1 gas at group IIC T4 and Zone 21 dust, so a single handset suits a solvent area and a powder area close together. Whether a given powder needs its own checks, for example for minimum ignition energy, belongs to the site's zoning file.
Sites clean frequently. IP68 sealing allows washing, but which disinfectants are permitted, and what a given cleaning agent does to the casing, must be confirmed with the site and the datasheet.
Batch records are regulated. The handset is a communication and photographic tool; it is not a GMP system, and any use for records must go through the site's quality and IT teams.
The sites are scattered across Flanders and Wallonia, so a group often has several. Android 16 supports Dutch and French, and one MDM console can manage units across sites.
