Explosion proof mobile phone for bulk liquid storage and port logistics in Belgium

Looking for an explosion proof mobile phone for bulk liquid storage in Belgium? The Port of Antwerp-Bruges lists more than 20 independent tank terminals with about 9.5 million cubic metres of storage, 8.9 million of it at Antwerp and 643,000 at Zeebrugge, according to the port authority. This page is for the HSE and operations teams at those terminals, and at the jetties and truck loading bays that serve them. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified at an independent tank terminal

An independent terminal stores and moves other companies' product: fine chemicals, petrochemicals, petroleum products, biofuels and liquefied gases, with services such as heating, blending and drumming. Public port data names operators including Vopak (Eurotank and other Antwerp terminals), Oiltanking at the Antwerp gas terminal, Noord Natie Odfjell, ITC Rubis, LBC and Sea-Tank, among others. The classified areas are where vapour can escape: tank roofs and venting, pump pits and manifolds, jetty arms and hoses, tank-truck and rail loading, and drumming and heating plant.

The point that sets this sector apart is variety. A producer such as BASF knows its own streams. A terminal handles whatever its customers book, so a tank that held a heavy oil last month may take a volatile solvent next month. Zoning and gas group are therefore set by the product list and re-assessed on change, and a design target of group IIC T4 avoids the need to match handset to cargo.

Operators and neighbours

Vopak
Terminals at Antwerp including Eurotank; named in port data.
Oiltanking
Antwerp gas terminal with butane storage, per port reporting.
Noord Natie Odfjell, ITC Rubis, LBC, Sea-Tank
Independent chemical and fuel terminals listed by the port among Antwerp operators.
Fluxys LNG
The Zeebrugge LNG terminal; see the page on an explosion proof phone for Fluxys.
Producers next door
Cluster operators such as TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil run their own storage.

Typical hazardous-area situations

Tank farms
Fixed and floating roof tanks with vents and relief points; Zone 1 and 2 near openings.
Pump and manifold areas
Seals and flanges, many products on one manifold.
Jetties
Loading arms, hoses and vapour return, with vessel movements.
Truck and rail loading
Bays with vapour at the hatch and static hazards.
Liquefied gas storage
Butane and propane spheres and tanks with Zone 1 around fittings.
Built for local conditions

What terminal work does to a explosion proof mobile phone in Belgium

Many products, one device

A terminal that handles dozens of products cannot issue a different phone per cargo. Ex ib IIC T4 is the design target, and the certificate will state the exact scope; unusual cargoes should be checked against it and against the safety data sheet.

Vessel and truck schedules

Berths run on arrival times and trucks queue at bays. Calling the control room, photographing a connection and completing a checklist from one device means the operator does not choose between the job and the record.

Wet, windy, exposed

Tank farms and jetties have no shelter from rain and salt air. IP68 sealing is aimed at that duty, and a unit can be rinsed down.

Contractors and inspectors visiting several terminals

Surveyors, inspectors and maintenance contractors work at several terminals in a week. Each operator decides what is allowed; a managed profile and a single marking string make a visiting device easier to assess.

Use cases · terminals

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Jetty01

Loading and discharge

Pre-transfer checks, hose connection photographs and calls to the control room, all from the berth.

Tank farm02

Inspection and gauging rounds

Rounds record levels, photograph valves and report a leak with a position, without a trip back to a safe area.

Maintenance03

Tank cleaning and change of service

When a tank changes product, classification, isolation and permits all change. A managed unit carries the current permit and is returned wiped.

Approval and access

What a terminal will ask for

We do not claim any relationship with any terminal operator. Operators set their own requirements, usually through a procurement process and a safety department, and customers' own audits of the terminal add to them. Generally expect to be asked for the ATEX certificate, CE marking, declaration of conformity, gas group and temperature class, and Dutch-language instructions, with SCC or VCA safety certification commonly asked of contractors. Ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams for current requirements. Certification of the IS-04Z1 to ATEX 2014/34/EU is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Questions · bulk liquid storage and port logistics

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Belgian bulk liquid terminals yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and ATEX certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No unit will be supplied for a classified area before the certificate covering that use exists.

Does one handset suit terminals that change products?

The design target covers group IIC at T4, which is broad. Whether it suits a given cargo depends on the zoning for that tank and the autoignition temperature of the product, so check the certificate when issued.

Are independent terminals the same as the chemical companies they serve?

No. They are separate businesses with their own procurement. A producer such as BASF Antwerpen has its own tanks and its own rules.

Does this cover LNG at Zeebrugge?

Zeebrugge LNG is operated by Fluxys and covered on its own page. Cold-surface and cryogenic duty must be confirmed against the datasheet and certificate when issued.
