Explosion proof mobile phone for ExxonMobil Antwerp

Searching for an explosion proof mobile phone for ExxonMobil Antwerp in Belgium? The refinery on the Scheldt is a hydrocarbon site in the full sense: crude distillation, hydrotreating, a delayed coker and a cogeneration plant, with Zone 1 gas atmospheres through most of the process area. This page is for the HSE and telecoms teams who decide which handsets may be carried inside it. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified at the Antwerp refinery

A refinery is a set of pressure vessels, furnaces, columns, heat exchangers and pumps connected by pipework, and the classified area follows the hydrocarbon. At Antwerp ExxonMobil has added a delayed coker, started in 2018 at about 50,000 barrels a day to turn heavy, high-sulphur residue into marine gasoil and diesel; a diesel hydrotreater to raise low-sulphur diesel output; and a 130 megawatt cogeneration unit. Each of those brought new classified areas. Hydrotreating handles hydrogen at pressure, and the coker handles hot heavy oil and light gas from the drums.

We have kept to what ExxonMobil has announced publicly, which is the refinery, the coker, the hydrotreater and the cogeneration unit, and have not described other process units in detail. The refinery stands within the Antwerp cluster beside BASF and TotalEnergies, each with separate procurement.

Site and operator facts

Refinery on the Scheldt in the Antwerp cluster, operated by US-based ExxonMobil.
Delayed coker
Started in 2018, about 50,000 barrels a day, converting residue to marine gasoil and diesel.
Diesel hydrotreater
Added to raise low-sulphur diesel production; hydrogen duty at pressure.
Cogeneration
A 130 megawatt unit supplying power and steam.

Typical hazardous-area situations

Process units, Zone 1 and 2
Distillation, hydrotreating and conversion units handling flammable gas and liquid.
Hydrogen service
Hydrotreater and recycle gas areas, where group IIC is the planning target.
Sour streams
Hydrogen sulphide in some process streams adds toxic gas exposure beside the ignition hazard.
Coke drums
Cyclic operation with hot surfaces, steam and high-pressure water decoking.
Tank farm and jetty
Storage tanks, pump areas and product movement towards the river.
Built for local conditions

What a refinery of this kind does to a explosion proof mobile phone in Belgium

Temperature class matters here

The coker and furnace areas run hot, and some streams have low auto-ignition temperatures. The marking target of the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the temperature class on the certificate is the figure your instrumentation engineer compares with the area classification.

Hydrogen duty in the hydrotreater

Group IIC is the group that includes hydrogen. For hydrotreater and recycle gas areas a device that stops at IIB will be refused or replaced early, so IIC is the design target.

Gas detection and escape are part of the round

Operators carry personal gas monitors, and a handset must not add to the kit worn on the body. IP68 sealing is aimed at a device that is carried for twelve hours and put down on a rack or a rail in the rain.

A site within a global operator's standards

ExxonMobil operates under its own group engineering and procurement rules. We do not know the specific requirements and do not claim any approval; the practical step is to ask its site procurement and HSE teams what documentation they want to see for portable electrical equipment.

Managed like the rest of the estate

Android Enterprise enrolment lets the site manage units from its existing console, set camera policy by area and remove contractor units at the end of a job.

Use cases · ExxonMobil Antwerp

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Process unit rounds

An outside operator checks pumps, filters and furnaces, records readings and photographs a leak. The IS-04Z1 is designed so those tasks can be done inside the Zone 1 area without a return to the control room.

Turnaround02

Coker and unit shutdowns

Planned stops bring large contractor crews, scaffolders and inspectors onto the units. A managed handset with permit lookup and photographs of completed work suits a campaign that has to be closed by a fixed date.

Marine03

River and jetty movements

Product moves by water as well as pipe. A handset with GNSS, a camera and calling in a single sealed device supports loading checks at the berth.

Approval and access

What the site will want to see

ExxonMobil Antwerp is inside the EU, so the product-side requirement is ATEX 2014/34/EU: a notified body certificate, the CE marking and the EU declaration of conformity, with instructions in Dutch for a Flemish site. IECEx documentation is being prepared alongside, because a global operator often works from IECEx evidence. We do not claim that either is accepted by ExxonMobil, and certification of the IS-04Z1 is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Contractors working on the site would normally be asked by its procurement and HSE teams for safety management credentials such as SCC or VCA, and for equipment records. Ask those teams for the current supplier and contractor requirements before a trial.

Questions · ExxonMobil Antwerp

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at ExxonMobil Antwerp yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and ATEX and IECEx certification are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Nothing will be supplied for a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

What does a delayed coker do, and is it a harder place to work?

A delayed coker heats heavy residue and cracks it in coke drums into lighter liquids, gas and petroleum coke. The drums cycle between filling, steaming and cutting, so conditions change through the day. The classification is set by the site, and the certificate will state the exact scope.

Does ExxonMobil Antwerp need different documentation from a European operator?

Probably the same core documents, plus whatever its global standards add. We are preparing ATEX and IECEx documentation in English, Dutch and French and would ask the site team what else it wants.

Would approval here carry to other ExxonMobil sites?

No. Each site makes its own decision. Documents prepared to a group standard may be a useful starting point elsewhere, nothing more.
