Warm humid climate
Niteroi has a tropical monsoon climate with warm temperatures year-round and frequent rain.
Niteroi has a tropical monsoon climate with warm to hot temperatures all year and relatively frequent rainfall, so humidity is a constant factor for equipment stored or used outdoors. The Brasa yard there, a partnership of SBM Offshore and Synergy operating since 2012, integrates FPSO topside modules with hulls for pre-salt service, so shipyard hazardous areas are present. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof mobile phone for Niteroi, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Niteroi: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Ex marking | Group, category, protection concept, gas group, temperature class | II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 (target) |
| Gas group | IIA, IIB or IIC matched to the area drawing | IIC (target) |
| Temperature class | T-class below the ignition temperature of the gas | T4, 135 °C (target) |
| Where it applies | Niteroi: FPSO module fabrication and integration, Shipyard tank and hull work, Fuel and gas handling at quaysides | Classified by the site operator |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Niteroi. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Niteroi has a tropical monsoon climate with warm temperatures year-round and frequent rain.
The 65,000 square metre yard is within the Rio metropolitan area across the bay from downtown.
The Rio-Niterói Bridge, completed in 1974, is 13.29 km long and has a 72 m high central span so that ships can pass into Guanabara Bay, linking Niterói to Rio de Janeiro by road.
Niteroi lies across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro; it was founded in 1573 and served as capital of Rio de Janeiro state until 1975, apart from a short period from 1894 to 1903.
Industry reports in 2025 said Hanwha Ocean was considering a shipyard in Niteroi to meet local-content requirements tied to Petrobras projects such as the FPSO P-86 tender.
The two power-generation modules for the P-56 platform were built by Rolls-Royce with UTC Engenharia at UTC's site in Niteroi, an example of offshore topside fabrication done in the city.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Niteroi. A marking check at a shipyard depends on the work: tank and hull entry, quayside gas handling and integration of process modules differ. Compare zone, gas group and temperature class with each job's classification. The IS-04Z1 target marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is not yet certified.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are fpso module fabrication and integration, shipyard tank and hull work, fuel and gas handling at quaysides. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Mainly shipyard and fabrication work: platform modules, power packages and vessel outfitting for the Campos and Santos basins. Hazardous areas arise on tanks, engine spaces and process modules, so zone definitions come from the yard's classification plan.
Niteroi faces Rio across Guanabara Bay and is connected by road bridge and ferry, so commuting between yards and Rio offices is common. Ask local logistics staff about peak traffic when scheduling deliveries of equipment.
The sheet notes that the latest sourced integrations are 2014-2015, so current workload is not confirmed. A buyer should ask the yard directly. Confirm approvals and documentation requirements with the site operator before planning a fleet.
