Tropical coast
The area has a tropical monsoon climate and is reached by the Rio-Santos highway, so ingress protection and travel time both matter.
The semisubmersible platform P-56 was integrated at BrasFELS: about 54,658 tonnes, living quarters for 200 people, 79 risers and a power plant of 100 MW, built with a 72.9 percent domestic content index for its topside. It hosts the Transpetro TEBIG crude oil terminal and the BrasFELS shipyard, so tank-farm, tanker-berth and offshore-unit fabrication hazardous areas are both present. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof mobile phone for Angra dos Reis, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Angra dos Reis: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Angra dos Reis. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The area has a tropical monsoon climate and is reached by the Rio-Santos highway, so ingress protection and travel time both matter.
TEBIG has ten oil tanks totalling 845,557 cubic metres and two piers able to take vessels of up to 500,000 DWT.
The port of Angra dos Reis includes an oil terminal, and the TEBIG facility used by Petrobras in the Bay of Ilha Grande moves large quantities of crude oil, which makes it one of the busiest ports in Brazil.
The municipality covers 816 km2, has a tropical monsoon climate, hilly terrain and more than 300 islands, the largest being Ilha Grande, so many work locations are coastal or island sites.
Construction of a third unit, Angra 3, began in 1984, was halted in 1986 and again in 2015, and in 2024 the operator Eletronuclear won a court appeal against a municipal work embargo.
The port also has shipbuilding facilities, including the Keppel Fels yard (formerly Verolme, known as BrasFELS), where large offshore units have been assembled and outfitted.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Angra dos Reis. A marking check at TEBIG's tank storage or tanker piers would compare the zone, gas group and temperature class on the label with what the terminal has classified. Shipyard units under integration may differ from the terminal. The IS-04Z1 target marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is a target, not a certificate.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are crude oil tank storage, tanker piers and loading arms, shipyard offshore-unit fabrication and integration, bunker fuel barge supply. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes, typically. A tropical monsoon climate and sea air mean high humidity and salt, so look for sealed housings, corrosion-resistant connectors and tidy cable or charging practice. Confirm with the site safety officer what ingress protection level their permit-to-work process expects.
Access is generally by boat across the Bay of Ilha Grande, with many of the 300-plus islands reachable only by sea, and some units are later towed to the Campos Basin. Confirm boarding and carry-on rules for powered devices with the vessel operator.
Rain, humidity and salt air are routine, so check enclosure rating, seal condition and charging contacts regularly. IP68 resists water and dust but is not explosion protection. Because ingress protection and travel time both matter on this coast, keep a spare device ready.
