ATEX mobile phone for Sweden, Zone 1 and Zone 21 work

The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for refinery and cracker rounds on the west coast, mill and recovery boiler areas inland, and winter shifts in the north where a device is handled through two layers of glove. It is pre-launch: the ATEX programme is running, and Swedish operators and contractors can read the evidence and trial a unit while it does.

Where it works in Sweden

Swedish hazardous area work sits in four separate worlds that rarely share a supplier. The Bohuslän and Västra Götaland coast holds the refining and petrochemical capacity, with a cracker cluster at Stenungsund that is unusual in Europe for having several plants of different owners connected by pipe. Nynäshamn adds specialty bitumen production south of Stockholm. The far north holds iron ore mining and the steelmaking and hydrogen projects growing beside it. Then, everywhere in between, the mills: kraft pulp, board and biofuel plants where combustible wood dust and recovery boiler chemistry are the first-order hazards rather than an afterthought.

Operators and contractors such as Preem, St1 and Nynas need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Lysekil, Gothenburg river bank and Stenungsund. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Swedish site conditions

Sweden asks two things of a handheld device that warmer markets do not: work in the cold, and work through the clothing the cold requires. The points below are written against that, and against the dust that dominates the mill sector.

For evaluators in Sweden, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Winter rounds, not office use; Usable through winter gloves; Wood dust as a primary hazard; Hydrogen in the industrial transition; Long shifts, long distances; Swedish on the screen and in the file.

Winter rounds, not office use

rugged build covers low temperature and thermal shock, and IP68 sealing covers the snow and meltwater that follow a device indoors. The certified ambient range is a certificate parameter and is published with the datasheet, which matters more here than anywhere: a northern site will simply reject a device whose lower limit stops at a Central European winter.

Usable through winter gloves

A handset carried on a January round is operated with gloved hands, often in the dark, sometimes while holding something else. Screen response with gloves, physical key behaviour and one-handed use are things a Swedish trial should test on the first day rather than accept on paper.

Wood dust as a primary hazard

In the mill sector Zone 21 is not a secondary consideration. Dust protection sits inside the same certification programme as the gas marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so chip handling, conveyor galleries and the recovery area can be covered by one device rather than by a gas handset and a separate dust one.

Hydrogen in the industrial transition

Group IIC is the target, and IIC is the group that includes hydrogen. Swedish steel and fuel projects are building hydrogen production and handling into sites that never had it, and handheld equipment specified only to IIB tends to be replaced within a few years of that arriving.

Long shifts, long distances

On a mine surface installation or a mill site the nearest charging point can be a building away and outside the classified area entirely. The 4,000 mAh cell is sized for a full shift with the camera and a maintenance application in use, so nobody has to plan a walk around a battery.

Swedish on the screen and in the file

Android 16 carries a Swedish interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in Swedish alongside English. Enrolment, restrictions, remote wipe and reissue are handled through EMM and MDM, which is what makes a shared contractor pool workable.

Approvals in Sweden

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

ATEX is the whole product-side requirement and Sweden adds no national Ex approval on top. Two Swedish habits do shape a purchase, though. Arbetsmiljöverket rewrote its entire rulebook with effect from 1 January 2025, so the familiar AFS 2003:3 reference has gone even though the duty behind it has not. And on most flammable goods sites MSB's permit regime puts a named föreståndare in the approval chain alongside the safety engineer.

Regulatory route · Sweden

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

The product route is short. ATEX 2014/34/EU is implemented in Sweden through more than one authority rather than a single national decree, which surprises buyers who expect one reference to quote. For electrical equipment, and a handset is electrical equipment, Elsäkerhetsverket's föreskrifter ELSÄK-FS 2016:2 implement the directive; Arbetsmiljöverket's AFS 2023:7 covers products that are non-electrical equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres. In every case the conformity route is the European one: a notified body certificate, the EU declaration of conformity and CE marking, with no additional Swedish approval, no local re-testing and no registration afterwards. Radio spectrum and equipment matters sit with PTS, the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority, under the Radio Equipment Directive. If a supplier suggests that Sweden requires something further before an ATEX handset can be supplied here, ask them to name the instrument.

The duty side has just moved, and it is worth knowing before an internal review quotes a dead reference. Arbetsmiljöverket replaced its whole föreskrift structure with effect from 1 January 2025, and AFS 2003:3 on work in explosive atmospheres, which everyone in Swedish industry could cite from memory, was repealed as part of that. The requirement level was deliberately carried across rather than changed: the employer still classifies the hazardous areas, still assesses ignition sources and still holds an explosionsskyddsdokument, but the paragraph numbers in your management system may now point at nothing. Alongside that sits MSB, which administers the law on flammable and explosive goods. Sites handling flammable goods above the threshold need a permit and a named föreståndare who is answerable for how the goods are handled, and that person is usually in the room when handheld equipment is specified. Underground mining adds a further layer supervised by the mining inspectorate, and equipment taken underground has to be assessed on that basis rather than on a surface certificate.

Use cases · Sweden

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Sweden includes: A revisionsstopp on the west coast; Recovery area and chip handling at a kraft mill; Surface installations in Norrbotten; Loading and blending at a coastal terminal.

Refining01

A revisionsstopp on the west coast

A shutdown at Lysekil or on the Gothenburg river bank brings in crews from across the Nordic region for a fixed window that cannot slip. When every crew carries a Zone 1 handset enrolled in the site console, the permit, the isolation photograph and the sign-off stay in one place, and a supervisor can release a line without walking back to the office to find a signature.

Pulp and paper02

Recovery area and chip handling at a kraft mill

A mill puts a wood dust area, a chemical recovery area and a lime kiln within a few minutes of each other, each with its own classification. One device that covers gas and dust ends the routine of leaving a phone at a boundary, which is how a mill ends up with operators carrying nothing at all.

Mining and steel03

Surface installations in Norrbotten

Pelletising plants, fuel systems and the hydrogen and gas installations attached to new steel projects put classified areas on sites where the outdoor working temperature is below freezing for months. Equipment has to start, hold a fix and keep a link after an hour outside, not just at the beginning of a round.

Terminals and biofuels04

Loading and blending at a coastal terminal

Product terminals along the Bothnian and Bohuslän coasts run road, rail and marine loading into the same tank farm, increasingly with renewable blends that change the flash point mix. A handset that can photograph a seal, read an NFC tag on a bay and reach the control room from the gantry takes most of the walking out of an hourly routine.

How to buy · Sweden

How to evaluate and buy in Sweden

The device has not launched, so none of this needs a purchase order. The steps are ordered so your internal approval and our certification run side by side, and so a Swedish trial happens in the season that actually tests the equipment.

  1. 01

Send the classification and the season

Give us the zones, the gas or dust group and the temperature class from your classification drawings, the lowest working temperature the users see, and roughly how many handsets a site would carry. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the specification, the target marking string and a written status for each certification in progress, which is enough for a skyddsingenjör to draft the equipment selection entry and for purchasing to open a supplier file while the certificate is still being issued.

  3. 03

Trial a unit in winter conditions

Evaluation units go to Swedish operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful Swedish trial covers enrolment in your own management console, gloved use outdoors in the cold, a dust area, coverage at the edge of the site network and a full shift with the camera in service.

  4. 04

Agree the supply and service route

On completion of certification, supply runs through a Nordic distribution partner or direct where a customer prefers that, with Swedish documentation and a stated service route. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request against a defined quantity, configuration and support scope.

Questions · Sweden

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Sweden?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Sweden →
Is the IS-04Z1 already ATEX certified for use in Sweden?

No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and the certification programme is in progress, with launch planned for Q4 2026. No unit is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate covering that use has been issued, and we would rather say so than let a specification be written on an assumption.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Sweden?

There is no list price before launch. Pre-launch pricing is quoted in writing against a stated quantity, configuration and support scope, in the currency your contract uses, so a purchasing team can put a defensible figure into a budget. Evaluation units are placed under a trial agreement rather than sold.

Which Swedish rules actually apply to the device itself?

For electrical equipment the relevant transposition of ATEX 2014/34/EU is Elsäkerhetsverket's ELSÄK-FS 2016:2, with Arbetsmiljöverket's AFS 2023:7 covering non-electrical products. Either way the evidence is European: a notified body certificate, the EU declaration of conformity and CE marking. There is no separate Swedish approval to obtain afterwards.

Our procedures still cite AFS 2003:3. Is that a problem?

It is worth correcting. AFS 2003:3 on work in explosive atmospheres was repealed when Arbetsmiljöverket's new rule structure took effect on 1 January 2025. The obligations themselves were carried across rather than relaxed, so you still classify the areas and still hold an explosionsskyddsdokument, but a document that cites a repealed föreskrift invites a question at the first inspection.

How cold can it be used in?

The lower ambient limit is fixed by the certificate, not by us, and it is published with the datasheet once the certificate is issued. This is the single specification a northern Swedish site should insist on seeing in writing, because a device rated for a mild European winter behaves differently at a pelletising plant in February. Send us the lowest temperature your users work in and we will answer against it.

Will there be Swedish documentation and a Swedish interface?

Yes. Android 16 carries a Swedish interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in Swedish alongside English. The marking string, gas group and temperature class are supplied in a form your explosion protection document can quote directly.

Is this intrinsically safe or flameproof?

Intrinsically safe. Flameproof, the Ex d concept, contains an explosion inside a heavy enclosure and is how fixed equipment is often built. Intrinsic safety, Ex ib, limits the energy in the circuit so that ignition cannot occur at all. People searching for a flameproof mobile nearly always mean a phone for a Zone 1 area, and for something carried all shift the Ex ib route is what produces a device anyone will actually keep in a pocket.

How are repair and battery replacement handled?

Through a recognised facility, never on site and never in a general phone workshop, because opening the device destroys the protection concept the certificate depends on. A Nordic service and battery arrangement forms part of the launch programme and the terms can be reviewed under a pre-launch agreement before they are published.
