Explosion proof mobile phone for Preem in Sweden

Preem operates two refineries in Sweden, Lysekil at Brofjorden on the Bohuslän coast and Gothenburg on the Göta älv, and both are moving towards renewable fuel production. This page is for the process, maintenance and HSE teams deciding what an explosion proof mobile phone has to do on those sites. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is still pre-launch, with ATEX certification in progress. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Zone 1 areas at the Lysekil and Gothenburg refineries

Lysekil is the largest refinery in Sweden and sits on the coast at Brofjorden, where crude arrives by tanker at a dedicated jetty and products leave the same way. Gothenburg is smaller and tighter, built on the river bank at Hisingen among the other energy terminals of the Göta älv. Preem publishes a combined crude capacity of more than 18 million cubic metres a year across the two. The hazard that matters for a handset is the same at both: hydrocarbon vapour and hydrogen in process units, in tank farms and along pipe racks, with the area classification drawn around each unit rather than around the whole site. Preem has also published plans for a 50 megawatt electrolyser at Lysekil, for a renewable fuel unit at Gothenburg and for a larger renewable fuel programme at Lysekil, so hydrogen and bio-feedstocks are arriving on sites built for crude. Check each project's status with Preem.

What a Preem refinery does to a handset

Classification decides whether a phone may be carried at all. After that the refinery decides how long it lasts on a round, and these are the conditions that come up when people on a hydrocarbon site discuss a handset.

A round that crosses several classified areas

An operator on a Lysekil round passes from a hydrotreater to a pump house to a tank bund within one hour, with a different zone drawing for each. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1, so the question is not whether the phone stays in the pocket at the boundary but what the temperature class on the certificate allows near the hottest lines.

Hydrogen as a growing share of the inventory

Hydrogen is in group IIC, the most demanding gas group, and the marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is written to cover it. A handset specified only to IIB would have to be revisited when an electrolyser or an upgrading unit changes the area drawings.

Wet, salt-laden coastal weather

Brofjorden and the river bank both bring wind, sleet and salt spray to a site with long open walkways. IP68 sealing and rugged build are what decide whether the screen and ports still work after a winter shift outdoors.

Photographs that carry the evidence

A leaking flange, a corroded support and an isolation tag are all easier to report with a 50 MP photograph than with a description. A camera also needs a policy, and Android Enterprise enrolment lets the site switch it off in areas where photography is restricted.

Use cases · Preem

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Unit rounds with readings and photos

An outside operator records readings, photographs a defect and reaches the control room from the same device, replacing the radio, the camera and the paper round sheet carried into the unit.

Turnaround02

Planned shutdown windows

A shutdown brings a large contractor workforce in for a fixed window. Permits and isolation photographs on enrolled handsets cut the walks back to the permit office.

Marine and logistics03

Jetty and loading gantry work

Ship, rail and road loading all have vapour at the connection point. Navigation, a call to the control room and a photograph of a seal or hose coupling are done with one hand on the gantry rather than from a safe area.

Work and approval

Shutdowns, contractors and the approval step

Refinery work is organised in two rhythms. Day-to-day operation is shift work with outside operators on timed rounds and a control room behind them. Planned shutdowns are the other rhythm: a fixed window, a crowd of contractors from across the Nordic region, and a permit-to-work system that has to keep up.

Preem's own requirements for equipment suppliers are for Preem to state, and this page does not claim any relationship with the company. In practice a buyer should ask the Preem procurement and HSE teams what a supplier file must contain: the ATEX certificate and marking, the temperature class, the gas group, the safe-use instructions and the service route. The IS-04Z1 certificates have not been issued yet.

Questions · Preem

Frequently asked questions

Can an intrinsically safe phone replace a personal gas detector on a refinery round?

No. A Zone 1 handset is designed so that it cannot ignite a flammable atmosphere. It does not measure one, and it cannot sense hydrogen sulphide or oxygen depletion. Keep the personal gas monitor the site already issues and treat the phone as the communication and reporting device.

Does the IIC target matter on a refinery that mainly handles crude and naphtha?

Hydrocarbons such as naphtha sit in lower groups, but a refinery with hydrogen in hydrotreating and an electrolyser planned is a mixed-group site. IIC covers all of them, so one handset specification serves the whole round rather than one device per unit.

Can it be used on the jetty at Lysekil?

The design target is Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, with IP68 sealing for spray and rain. Whether a given berth is classified Zone 1 or Zone 2, and what the operator allows there, is set by Preem's own classification drawings.
