Explosion proof mobile phone for Refining and Petrochemicals in Sweden

Sweden's refining and petrochemical capacity is concentrated on the west coast, at Lysekil, Gothenburg and Stenungsund, with specialty refining at Nynäshamn south of Stockholm. This page is for process and HSE teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone in Sweden for Zone 1 gas areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is still pre-launch, with ATEX certification in progress. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Refineries and cracker plants on the Swedish coast

The west coast holds nearly all of Sweden's crude refining. Preem runs the refineries at Lysekil and Gothenburg, St1 has a refinery on the Gothenburg river bank, and the Stenungsund cluster makes petrochemicals from a Borealis cracker, with Perstorp and Nouryon among its neighbours. Nynas produces specialty bitumen and naphthenic oils at Nynäshamn. The hazards are the familiar ones, flammable vapour and hydrogen in process units and tank farms, but each site has a different shape: a coastal refinery with crude jetties, a river-bank refinery with terminals as neighbours, and a chemical island where plants are joined by pipe. Read the company pages for an explosion proof phone for Preem and an explosion proof phone for Borealis.

Built for local conditions

What a coastal refinery does to a handset

Plants on the Swedish coast share wet weather, a steady crowd of contractors and a mix of old and new process units. These conditions come up in every conversation about handsets at these sites.

One gas group for every unit

Hydrogen makes a refinery a mixed-group site, and IIC covers all of them. The IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so one specification serves a whole round.

Wind, sleet and salt spray

Coastal plants are outdoors for most of the year. IP68 sealing and rugged build cover wet, cold and rough handling.

Contractors on short, repeated stops

Several sites share contractor firms and a handset enrolled through Android Enterprise can be reissued without being reconfigured by hand.

Renewable feedstocks arriving on crude sites

Preem and St1 both run renewable fuel production alongside crude refining. New feedstock tanks, hydrogen supply and upgrading units change the area drawings within a site that was classified decades ago, so a handset specification written to the current drawing should still hold after the next change.

Camera policy by area

Cameras are restricted in some areas. The MDM console can switch the camera off by user group while leaving it on elsewhere.

Use cases · Refining and petrochemicals

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Refining01

Unit rounds and tank farms

Operators record readings and photograph defects without leaving the area to find a radio or a terminal.

Petrochemicals02

Cracker and polymer plant outages

Planned stops bring large crews onto hot, gas-bearing plant, and permits and isolations are kept on enrolled handsets.

Terminals03

Product loading and discharge

Gantry and jetty staff photograph a coupling, read a tag and call the control room with one device.

Work and approval

Outages, neighbours and the approval step

Refinery and cracker work follows a planned-stop rhythm. A unit runs for years, then stops for weeks, with contractors from across the Nordic region on site. Between stops, shift teams cover timed rounds. At Stenungsund and on the Gothenburg river bank, contractors also move between neighbouring plants, which makes a managed enrolment route more useful than a one-off purchase.

Each operator sets its own requirements for equipment suppliers and this page does not claim any relationship with any company named. Ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams what a supplier file needs. The IS-04Z1 certificates have not been issued yet.

Questions · Refining and petrochemicals

Frequently asked questions

Does the same handset work at refineries and chemical plants?

The design target of Zone 1, Zone 21 and group IIC is meant to cover both, but each plant's classification drawing decides, and the temperature class must be checked against the substances handled.

Are hot bitumen areas classified?

It depends on the product and the temperature. Light ends can raise vapour when bitumen is heated, and the operator classifies the area. Ask for the zone drawing before specifying.

Who certifies equipment for use in Sweden?

A European notified body certifies to ATEX 2014/34/EU and no additional Swedish approval is needed. See the Sweden page for the regulatory route.
