Gas and dust in one footprint
Zone 1 sits beside Zone 21 in a steelworks and a pellet plant. One handset designed for both avoids issuing a second device for the dust area.
Sweden's iron ore comes from Norrbotten, its steel from Luleå, Oxelösund and Borlänge, and a growing share of new investment is going into hydrogen. This page is for engineers and HSE staff across that chain who need an explosion proof mobile phone in Sweden for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed for both and is still pre-launch, with ATEX certification in progress. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

This sector is hard to classify as a whole because the risk is not spread evenly. A mine is mostly a mining-safety problem with a few classified spots. A steelworks is a large gas network with dust. A hydrogen project is a small, new area with the most demanding gas group. The common thread is that each of them is changing: LKAB is moving from pellets towards hydrogen-reduced sponge iron, SSAB is replacing blast furnaces with electric arc furnaces, and new projects at Boden and Luleå are bringing hydrogen to sites that never had it. A handset bought for today's classification drawings should still be correct when those drawings are redrawn. See the operator pages for an explosion proof phone for LKAB and an explosion proof phone for SSAB.
Contractors and rotating crews move between sites in this sector, and the same person may work at an ore concentrator in the morning and a gas main in the afternoon.

Hydrogen is group IIC. Specifying IIC at the outset avoids replacement when an electrolyser or hydrogen line is added to a site classified for lower groups.
Norrbotten sites have long winters and long distances. rugged build covers low temperature, and the 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a shift away from a charger.
Android Enterprise and the existing MDM console let a contractor pool be enrolled and wiped by operator, so a handset can travel between sites without carrying one operator's data into another.
Pellet plant outages, fuel stores and crusher areas bring contractors into zones where the phone is the only way to report or sign off.
Outage work on a gas main or furnace is documented with photographs and permits on an enrolled device, rather than a paper pack carried into the area.
Commissioning teams from several contractors work on the same unit. A managed Zone 1 handset keeps the record in one place and can be reissued when the shift changes.
Work in this sector comes in waves: construction of new capacity, then commissioning, then long periods of operation with periodic outages. Contractors move between operators during each wave. For a safety manager the useful question is whether the same device and the same enrolment route work at every site, not whether each site buys its own.
Operators set their own requirements for equipment suppliers and this page does not claim any relationship with any of them. Ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams what a supplier file needs. The IS-04Z1 certificates have not been issued yet.
ATEX 2014/34/EU covers the equipment through ELSÄK-FS 2016:2 for electrical products. Underground work adds the mining inspectorate. See the Sweden page for the regulatory route.
That is the design aim. The target of Zone 1 and Zone 21 with group IIC covers both, but the classification drawing for each location decides, so send us the zone, group and temperature class.
Through the MDM console. The handset is enrolled, restricted to approved applications and wiped at the end of the contract, so one pool of devices serves several sites.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Sweden. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
