Wood dust and process gas in Swedish pulp mills
A kraft mill is a chemical plant built around a wood yard. Chips and bark generate combustible dust from the yard to the boilers. The cooking and recovery side generates sulphur-bearing gases, methanol and turpentine, and a lime kiln needs fuel gas or oil. Södra's Värö mill south of Gothenburg is one of the large softwood pulp mills in Sweden and delivers tall oil, bark and turpentine as by-products. SCA's mills at Östrand, Obbola and Munksund produce tall oil too, and the Sunpine biorefinery at Piteå upgrades crude tall oil into a fuel feedstock. Work and approval
Shutdowns, contractors and the approval step
A mill's year is organised around its shutdown, with a large temporary workforce on top of the permanent staff. For the rest of the year, shift crews do rounds across a wide site, often with one operator covering a long route. A handset that works in both dust and gas areas is therefore more valuable than a second dedicated device.

Frequently asked questions
Is wood dust really a Zone 21 hazard?
Yes, where it can form a cloud or settle in layers, as in chip handling, bark fuel and sander dust. The classification drawing sets the zone and the IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 21.
Does the sulphur-bearing gas in a kraft mill change the specification?
It is toxic as well as flammable. The phone is designed not to ignite it but does not detect it, so personal gas monitors remain necessary.
Can the same handset be used at a biorefinery?
The target is Zone 1 and Zone 21, which covers flammable liquid areas and dust, subject to the classification drawing and temperature class at the site.
