Where it is designed to work in Nigeria

Classified area work here splits three ways. Onshore production in the Niger Delta runs from Port Harcourt and Warri, across flow stations and gas plants on a difficult footprint. Deepwater sits on FPSOs well offshore. Downstream, Lekki and Eleme have created onshore demand at a new scale.

Operators and contractors such as NNPC Limited, Renaissance Africa Energy and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Warri and Escravos and Bonny Island. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Nigerian operating conditions

The Nigerian problem is rarely cold or altitude. It is heat with permanent humidity, salt air offshore, water everywhere in the Delta, and handsets that move between contractors.

For evaluators in Nigeria, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Heat with constant humidity; Gas group for Delta atmospheres; Water, mud and boat transfers; A full shift away from a charger; Coverage that varies by kilometre; Control over a fleet that moves.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Heat with constant humidity

Ambients above 35 degrees with sustained humidity are the year round condition, and offshore adds salt. IP68 sealing keeps water and particulate out, and the certificate states the T4 ambient range.

Gas group for Delta atmospheres

Nigerian hydrocarbon service is typically Group IIA and IIB. A marking target of Ex ib IIC covers those, so one specification runs from a flow station to an LNG jetty.

Water, mud and boat transfers

Swamp locations are reached by boat, and kit gets dropped and knocked against steel. The handset has a rugged build, and IP68 covers immersion rather than splash.

A full shift away from a charger

Flow stations, jetties and remote manifolds offer no safe area socket mid shift. The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a working day with camera, torch and GNSS in use.

Coverage that varies by kilometre

With 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC the device falls back to plant or vessel Wi-Fi where the carrier signal is poor. Four constellation GNSS fixes a position between structures.

Control over a fleet that moves

Handsets here pass between crews, contractors and rotations, and devices go missing. Android 16 with EMM and MDM support gives enrolment, remote lock and remote wipe.

Approvals in Nigeria

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

IECEx Certificates of Conformity are recognised by operators and regulators across West Africa, and the international companies working here specify to the standards they apply globally. That certification is in progress.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

The certificate your HSE and engineering teams will ask for is the IECEx Certificate of Conformity. It is recognised by operators and regulators across West Africa, and the companies working here specify to the standards they use everywhere else, so a separate national Ex mark is not the gate. Sector oversight sits with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, but the requirement that reaches site is the operator HSE specification.

Two Nigerian steps sit alongside it. Import clearance runs through SONCAP, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria conformity assessment programme, which needs a product certificate and a per shipment certificate before goods clear customs, so an undocumented shipment is how a fleet gets stuck at the port. Radio equipment separately requires NCC type approval. The Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act and the NCDMB then require documented local participation, scored during tender evaluation: a foreign manufacturer supplies through a Nigerian entity, not around one.

Use cases · Nigeria

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Nigeria includes: Flow stations and gas plants in the Niger Delta; FPSO operations and crew handover offshore; Turnaround work at Lekki and Eleme; Crude and product loading at export terminals.

Upstream01

Flow stations and gas plants in the Niger Delta

Assets can be an hour apart by boat, and a query needing a photograph costs a return trip. A permitted handset means the image, the reading and the call happen at the equipment.

Offshore02

FPSO operations and crew handover offshore

On Bonga, Egina, Akpo and Agbami the crew changes on a fixed rotation, and anything not written down is lost at handover. A Zone 1 handset lets technicians close permits on deck.

Refining and petrochemicals03

Turnaround work at Lekki and Eleme

Large refining and petrochemical units concentrate thousands of contractor hours into short shutdown windows, with the whole process area classified. Supervisors clear a hold point from the work front.

Terminals and marine04

Crude and product loading at export terminals

Loading at Bonny, Escravos, Brass, Forcados and the Lagos product terminals puts people on jetties and tank tops with vapour present and a berthing window to hold.

How to buy · Nigeria

How to evaluate and buy in Nigeria

Nothing ships before certification completes, and here the import and content paperwork has to be ready at the same time as the certificate.

  1. 01

Send the site details and operator specification

Tell us the zone, the gas group, the temperature class and whether the fleet is onshore, offshore or both, and send the operator device clause if there is one.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and certificate schedule

You get the technical datasheet and a written schedule of which certifications are in progress and in what order, ready to attach to a technical bid.

  3. 03

Book an evaluation unit or join the pilot programme

Once certification permits release, units go to sites that have registered a requirement. A pilot with your own SIM, MDM and permit system settles what a specification comparison cannot.

  4. 04

    Supply through a Nigerian partner

Supply runs through a locally registered partner holding NCDMB documentation and operator vendor numbers, with the SON product certificate, per shipment SONCAP and NCC type approval handled as part of delivery. Devices here are bought against mobilisation, so tell us your date.

Questions · Nigeria

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Nigeria?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Nigeria →
Is the IS-04Z1 approved for use in Nigeria yet?

No. The device is pre-launch and the IECEx certification programme is in progress, as is every other scheme. Nothing should be planned into a classified area until the Certificate of Conformity exists.

Which certificate will a Nigerian operator ask to see?

The IECEx Certificate of Conformity in almost every case, because operators here apply the standards they apply globally. An ATEX certificate is issued in parallel where a specification names the European directive.

How does the device clear Nigerian customs?

Through SONCAP. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria requires a product certificate plus a certificate for each shipment before goods are released. A partner handles that.

Does the phone need NCC approval?

Yes. It carries 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC radios, so NCC type approval is required and forms part of the launch programme alongside the Ex certification.

Will buying it satisfy our Nigerian content obligations?

Supply is structured to work inside the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act, through a locally registered partner holding NCDMB documentation and operator vendor numbers.

Can it be used offshore on an FPSO?

It is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, which covers the classified areas on a Nigerian FPSO, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4. Operator management of change still applies.

When will units be available, and who repairs them?

Launch is Q4 2026. Warranty and service run through the Nigerian partner SAMS is appointing, and repair of certified Ex equipment must be done by a recognised facility.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Nigeria?

No list price is published before the certificates exist. Pricing is quoted in writing against quantity and configuration. Supply into Nigerian oil and gas runs through a locally registered partner holding NCDMB documentation, and landed cost depends on SONCAP clearance, so pricing is set with the channel rather than published.
