Explosion proof mobile phone for Marine & Offshore in Nigeria

Nigerian marine and offshore work covers FPSOs, supply bases, fabrication yards and crude export terminals. An explosion proof mobile phone for Nigeria marine and offshore crews has to survive salt, boat transfers and tank deck conditions as well as the gas. This page covers those sites. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed offshore and on the water

Offshore Nigeria means FPSOs on Bonga, Egina, Akpo and Agbami in the Gulf of Guinea, supported from shore bases at Onne, Warri and Lagos. The Onne oil and gas free zone near Port Harcourt hosts supply bases, fabrication yards and pipe storage, so a lot of work is quayside and on the vessels that serve the fields. Crude export terminals such as Bonny, Forcados, Escravos, Qua Iboe and Brass River load tankers through offshore moorings and jetties, with shuttle tankers serving the FPSOs. Classified areas follow the vessel: the process deck and turret of an FPSO, cargo tank and pump room areas on a tanker, and the loading area where ship and shore meet. Marine classification societies and the maritime regulator, NIMASA, add their own requirements on top of the operator's rules, so a handset on a vessel answers to more than one authority.

What salt water and boat transfers do to a handset

Offshore the gas group is straightforward. Water, movement and handling are what damage devices.

Salt spray and immersion

Spray is constant on deck, and a handset dropped between a vessel and a landing stage ends up in the water. IP68 sealing is designed for immersion, and rugged build for shock.

Heat and humidity

Offshore temperatures stay high and humid, and the certificate will state the temperature class and ambient range, with the target at Ex ib IIC T4.

Wi-Fi first, cellular second

Far from shore the carrier signal is weak. The device carries Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC with 4G LTE, so vessel networks can carry messages and forms.

Position on a moving structure

Four constellation GNSS places a photograph or defect on a deck, a barge or a yard plot, which helps where tag numbers are painted over.

Many crews, one policy

Rotations, contractors and visiting surveyors make for a changing fleet. Android Enterprise under an existing MDM console allows lock, wipe and camera policy.

Use cases · Marine and offshore

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work offshore.

Offshore01

Deck rounds and permit closure

A technician on an FPSO deck logs a reading, photographs a defect and closes a permit step in one place, without returning to the control room.

Marine02

Tanker loading and cargo surveys

Loading at Bonny, Escravos or a Lagos product terminal puts people on tank tops with vapour present and a berthing window to hold. Surveyors and loading masters can report and photograph from the manifold.

Yards03

Fabrication and hook-up

In the Onne yards and bases, welding and paint work create short-lived classified areas, and a managed handset helps supervisors record work and handovers.

What offshore and marine buyers ask for

Offshore operators set their own HSE standards, and vessels answer to their flag state and classification society as well. Ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams, and the vessel owner, what applies, including how devices may travel by helicopter and vessel. Expect the IECEx certificate with marking and ambient range and a repair route. In Nigeria the SONCAP and NCC steps and local content documentation sit alongside. Operators such as those described on the pages for Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production and the wider oil and gas sector run these processes themselves. SAMS has no supply relationship with any of them.

Questions · Marine and offshore

Frequently asked questions

Is a handset suitable for a tanker's cargo area?

Only if the vessel's rules and certification allow it. Tanker electrical installations have their own marine requirements, so involve the owner and class society.

What about helicopter transport?

The helicopter operator and the installation HSE team set the rules for batteries and radios. Ask for the policy before mobilising.

Does IP68 mean the phone floats?

No. IP68 means protection against dust and continuous immersion to a stated depth, not buoyancy. A lanyard is still sensible.

Do marine crews need to enrol phones in advance?

Yes, ideally ashore. Enrolment in the MDM console before mobilisation avoids relying on vessel bandwidth.
