The NLNG plant occupies the Finima area of Bonny Island, in Rivers State, where gas arrives by pipeline from the Niger Delta and leaves as LNG, LPG and condensate by ship. The six existing trains give a nameplate of 22 million tonnes a year, and the Train 7 project is intended to take that to about 30 million. Press reports in 2026 put Train 7 above 90 per cent complete, so a handset evaluation now overlaps with a plant that is still being commissioned in one area while the older trains run. The atmospheres are mostly Group IIA: methane, propane and condensate vapour, with refrigerant circuits that typically hold propane and mixed hydrocarbon components. Large flare and relief systems, tank farms and long jetty approaches complete the map. The shareholders are NNPC, Shell, TotalEnergies and Eni, so site rules reflect more than one operator culture.
At an LNG plant the hazard is predictable and the logistics are not. The handset has to cope with the people more than the gas.
Bonny Island is a low, wet delta island with year-round heat. The temperature class on the certificate is what an instrumentation engineer checks against the maximum surface temperature the area classification allows, and the marking target for the IS-04Z1 is Ex ib IIC T4.
Train 7 means active construction beside operating trains, with mud and wet ground. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the design answer to drops and immersion.
LNG pipework and tank bases run very cold, and moving from an air conditioned control room to a wet process area causes condensation. Sealing is meant to keep that out of the handset.
Between a train, the tank farm and a jetty, the distance to a safe area socket is long. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to cover a shift with camera, torch and GNSS in use.

The Nigerian layer sits alongside: SONCAP for import clearance, NCC type approval for the radios, and documented local content through a Nigerian entity. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch with certification in progress, and SAMS has no supply relationship with Nigeria LNG.
Press reports in 2026 describe it as more than 90 per cent complete and in systems completion and pre-commissioning, with a first cargo forecast for 2027. Confirm the current position with Nigeria LNG directly, because it decides which areas are classified and live.
Methane and propane are Group IIA, and the plant also has hydrocarbon refrigerants. An Ex ib IIC target covers all common gas groups, which simplifies a fleet, but the area classification documents set the requirement.
The jetty is classified and ship and shore have their own rules. A device is only allowed where the terminal and the ship's master agree, and the certificate has to support that zone.
