Explosion proof mobile phone for Oil & Gas in Nigeria

Nigeria's oil and gas sector runs from Niger Delta flow stations and gas plants to deepwater FPSOs in the Gulf of Guinea. An explosion proof mobile phone for Nigeria oil and gas work has to cope with swamp access, long rotations and a patchwork of operators, each with its own HSE rules. This page maps that ground. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed in Nigerian oil and gas

Onshore production is centred on Port Harcourt and Warri, with flow stations, gathering lines and gas plants spread across creeks and swamp. Much Delta crude is light and low in sulphur, so hydrogen sulphide is not the headline hazard it is in some other provinces, though gas plants and individual wells still need checking against their own classification documents. Gas processing at Escravos and elsewhere, associated gas handling and flare systems create Group IIA and IIB atmospheres. Offshore, deepwater FPSOs sit on Bonga, Egina, Akpo and Agbami. Ownership has shifted: Shell sold its onshore joint venture to Renaissance Africa Energy and Oando took over the former NAOC acreage, both in 2024, while the major deepwater operators remain in place. Pipeline integrity problems and security conditions shape how crews reach a site, and access is often by boat or helicopter, so a handset that works at the equipment saves a return trip.

Built for local conditions

What the Niger Delta does to a handset

The Delta is rarely cold or high. It is hot, wet and hard to reach, and that is what a handset has to be built around.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Water, mud and boat transfers

Swamp locations are reached by boat, and kit is knocked against steel and dropped on landing stages. IP68 covers immersion and the rugged build covers shocks, which matters more here than the gas group.

Heat with permanent humidity

Ambient temperatures above 35 degrees with sustained humidity are the working condition, and offshore adds salt. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, and the certificate will state the ambient range.

Remote sites and uneven coverage

With 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC the handset falls back to plant or vessel Wi-Fi where carrier signal is poor. Four constellation GNSS fixes a position at a wellhead hidden in mangrove.

A shift away from the charger

Flow stations offer no safe area socket mid round. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a working day with camera, torch and GNSS in use.

Fleets that change hands

Handsets pass between crews, operators and contractors, and devices go missing. Android Enterprise with an existing MDM console gives enrolment, remote lock and remote wipe.

Use cases · Oil and gas

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work in oil and gas.

Upstream01

Flow station and gas plant rounds

Assets can be an hour apart by boat, and a query needing a photograph costs a return trip. A permitted handset means the image, the reading and the call happen at the equipment.

Offshore02

FPSO operations and handover

On a fixed rotation anything not written down is lost at handover. A Zone 1 handset lets technicians close permits on deck and leave a photographic record for the next crew.

Contractors03

Drilling and workover campaigns

A rig crew works to a permit issued that morning and a rig brings its classified area with it. A managed handset carries the permit, the site directory and the daily report.

What operators in this sector ask of suppliers

Each operator in Nigerian oil and gas has its own HSE specification, and international operators usually specify to the standards they use elsewhere. Ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams what equipment review applies rather than assuming a common process. Typically the IECEx Certificate of Conformity is the evidence, with marking, gas group, temperature class and a repair route. The upstream regulator is the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, and the Nigerian Content Act requires documented local participation, so supply goes through a registered Nigerian entity with SONCAP and NCC type approval completed. SAMS has no customer relationship with any operator named here.

Questions · Oil and gas

Frequently asked questions

Is hydrogen sulphide a concern for the handset?

H2S is a toxic gas hazard managed with gas detectors and training, separate from explosion protection. Delta crude is often low in sulphur, but check the gas plant and well data. Ex certification does not replace gas detection.

Which gas group applies at a flow station?

Typically IIA and IIB for hydrocarbon vapour. An Ex ib IIC marking target covers both, though the area classification drawing for the site is the authority.

Do onshore and offshore sites need different handsets?

The same intrinsically safe specification is designed for both, but offshore adds salt, helicopter and vessel carriage rules, and onshore adds boat access and mud.

Can a contractor bring its own phones onto an operator's site?

Only if the operator's rules allow it, and usually only with the right certificate. Ask the operator's HSE team before mobilising.
