Explosion proof mobile phone for Vopak in Mexico

Vopak operates independent bulk liquid storage terminals on Mexico's Gulf coast, serving chemical, petrochemical and fuel customers. This page is for the terminal managers, HSE leads and telecoms teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone for Vopak sites in Mexico, where many different products share one tank farm. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty and is in certification ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone goes in a multi-product tank farm

An independent terminal stores products it does not own, for customers who change. A Vopak tank farm at a Gulf port may hold gasoline, solvents, ethylene derivatives and other chemicals within one fence, each with its own gas group, flash point and hazards. Vopak lists terminals at Altamira and Coatzacoalcos, where the Coatzacoalcos facility supports the Pajaritos chemical cluster, and has a presence at Veracruz as well. It also has an LNG terminal at Altamira with Enagas. That makes the safe-phone question a product-by-product one: the classification drawing and the product data sheet decide where a handset can go, not a general rule.

Sites and hazards

Altamira terminal
Chemical and petrochemical storage in the Tamaulipas port zone.
Coatzacoalcos terminal
Storage serving the Pajaritos chemical cluster in southern Veracruz.
Veracruz terminal
Storage at the Port of Veracruz, where fuel imports also arrive.
Altamira LNG terminal
LNG storage and regasification, a joint venture with Enagas; methane is Group IIA and cold equipment is part of the picture.
Solvents and aromatics
Flammable liquids that give off vapour at ambient temperature.
Ethylene derivatives and gases
Group IIB products needing a device rated for that group.

Operations and areas

Jetties and barges
Receipt and loading of chemical cargoes by vessel.
Tank dykes
Atmospheric tanks for many products; vapour near vents and roof seals.
Pump bays and manifolds
Product routing between tanks, jetties and loading bays.
Road and rail loading
Gantries for tanker trucks and rail cars, with vapour recovery in some bays.
Laboratories and sampling points
Where quality checks and customer samples are taken.
Control room
Safe area where inventory, scheduling and permits are managed.
How the work is organised

What a multi-customer terminal does to a handset

Terminal work is controlled by documentation. Every movement is recorded against a customer, a product and a tank, and a handset is part of that chain.

Every movement is a record

Operators log readings, valve line-ups and sample points against customer orders. A handset that carries the forms and returns a photograph with a time stamp reduces the amount of paperwork carried into the dyke.

Many products, one set of rules

A single dyke can hold flammable, corrosive and toxic liquids in neighbouring tanks. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, and the site safety team decides which products require the most restrictive group.

Customer inspections and surveyors

Independent inspectors, customer representatives and ship surveyors visit regularly for short periods. MDM enrolment makes visiting equipment controlled, and wipes the device when the visit ends.

Coastal weather

Altamira, Coatzacoalcos and Veracruz are hot, humid and salty, with heavy rain and storms. IP68 sealing and rugged build are designed for that, and a battery that lasts the shift keeps the operator from returning to the control room to charge.

Approval is the terminal's own

Vopak has its own safety standards, applied across a global network. Ask the local terminal management and HSE teams what a supplier must provide for a handset; SAMS has no relationship with Vopak and this page is not describing a programme.

Use cases · Vopak Mexico

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Tank gauging and sampling

An operator records tank levels, takes a sample and photographs the sample point label. The record goes into the customer file with a time stamp and position.

Marine02

Vessel arrival and loading

During a chemical cargo transfer, operators confirm line-ups with the ship, photograph connections and record the start and finish. The handset replaces a separate camera and a paper checklist.

Maintenance03

Shutdown of a tank or line

Contractors clean or inspect a tank under a permit. An enrolled handset carries the permit and drawings, and is wiped when the job ends.

Questions · Vopak Mexico

Frequently asked questions

Does a terminal need a different phone for each product?

No. The device is designed for the most demanding gas group, IIC, which covers IIA and IIB products. The site classification still decides where it may go, and temperature class T4 is checked against each product's auto-ignition temperature.

Why is the LNG terminal different?

LNG involves methane, a Group IIA gas, but also cryogenic equipment and large releases. The classification for that site follows its own studies, and a handset is one of many items checked.

Can we manage devices alongside our existing fleet?

Yes. The IS-04Z1 is managed from existing MDM consoles with Android Enterprise, so policy for apps and cameras sits in the same place as the rest of the fleet.

Has Vopak approved the device?

No. SAMS has no agreement, pilot or approval from Vopak. The page describes the kind of site the device is designed for.
