Explosion proof mobile phone for Braskem Idesa in Mexico

Braskem Idesa runs Etileno XXI, the ethane cracker and polyethylene complex at Nanchital in southern Veracruz, and has built ethane import capacity at Coatzacoalcos. This page is for the safety, process and telecoms teams who would need an explosion proof mobile phone for Braskem Idesa in Mexico to cover both flammable gas on the cracker and combustible dust in the polyethylene finishing area. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty, with certification in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed at the Nanchital plant

Etileno XXI is a world-scale integrated site. Ethane is cracked to ethylene in a furnace section, and the ethylene is converted into polyethylene in separate high-density and low-density plants. Published figures put the complex at about 1.05 million tonnes a year of ethylene, with two HDPE plants and an LDPE plant making polyethylene. For a handset, that single footprint contains three different hazards: ethylene and ethane gas in the cracker and the polymer reactors, hydrogen in some process streams, and polyethylene powder and fines in handling, conveying and silo areas. A phone approved only for gas leaves half the plant uncovered, and one approved only for dust leaves the other half.

Plant areas

Cracker furnaces
Ethane cracking at high temperature, with fired heaters and a hot, noisy environment.
Ethylene recovery and cold section
Cryogenic separation of ethylene; Group IIB gas with very low temperatures nearby.
HDPE and LDPE reactors
Ethylene under pressure with comonomers and hydrogen as a chain-transfer agent.
Extrusion and pelletising
Polymer pellets and fines where dust can accumulate on surfaces.
Silos, conveying and bagging
Combustible dust areas, typically Zone 21 or 22 depending on the dust assessment.
Flares and utilities
Flare, steam and cooling water systems around the process block.

Logistics and supply

Ethane import terminal
The Terminal Quimica Puerto Mexico at Coatzacoalcos, developed with Advario, to receive ethane from the US Gulf coast.
Ethane pipeline supply
Pipeline supply from Pemex gas processing remains part of the feedstock picture.
Polyethylene dispatch
Bagged and bulk product leaves by truck and rail towards Mexican and export customers.
Contractors on site
Maintenance and turnaround contractors working inside and between the process blocks.
Control rooms
Safe areas where handsets are enrolled, checked and handed out for rounds.
Nanchital and Coatzacoalcos
Local communities and an industrial corridor shared with other Veracruz operators.
How the work is organised

What a continuous-process plant asks of a handset

A cracker is run continuously and stopped rarely, so how the plant is staffed and maintained shapes the device more than any spec sheet.

Long runs, then a big turnaround

Crackers operate for years between major shutdowns. During a planned turnaround the site fills with contractors working to a tight programme, and a fleet of handsets needs to be enrolled, tracked and returned by the day rather than managed one at a time.

Rounds across three kinds of area

An operator may start the shift in the furnace area, walk the ethylene section, and finish at the polymer silos. A handset that is valid for gas and dust on the same round avoids carrying one device for the cracker and another for the powder area.

Static is a plant-wide concern

Polyethylene powder and ethylene both carry static risks. Housing materials, surface finishes and the way a device is handled all matter, and the certificate documentation is where your electrical engineer checks them against the plant procedures.

Hot, humid and exposed

Veracruz is hot and humid for much of the year, and furnace areas add radiant heat. IP68 sealing, rugged build and a T-class that suits the area drawing are what carry a unit through a shift outdoors.

Vendor files are the plant's own

Ask Braskem Idesa's procurement, safety and IT teams what a supplier must provide before a device is allowed on site, and do not assume that a general certificate answers every question. We have no relationship with the company and are not describing a programme.

Use cases · Etileno XXI

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Cracker and reactor rounds

An operator walks the cracker and polymerisation areas logging readings and photographing defects, with the site's own forms available on the handset. Position and photographs go into the same report, so the control room can find a fault without a verbal description.

Maintenance02

Turnaround planning and permits

In a shutdown, planners and contractor supervisors need permits, isolations and drawings close at hand. An enrolled device carries them offline and syncs on the plant network, and the MDM console shows which unit is with which contractor.

Logistics03

Dispatch and import operations

Where product or ethane moves through loading, unloading and storage, staff need a camera and a call on the same device while moving between classified and safe areas.

Questions · Braskem Idesa

Frequently asked questions

Does one handset really cover both gas and dust at a polyethylene plant?

The IS-04Z1 design target is Zone 1 for gas and Zone 21 for dust, which is the combination a cracker with a polymer finishing area requires. Whether a specific silo or conveyor is Zone 21 or 22 is a decision for the plant's dust hazard assessment.

Which gas group applies to ethylene?

Ethylene is Group IIB, and hydrogen is Group IIC. The ATEX marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is designed to cover both, subject to certification, so the device group does not limit the choice.

Can we use our existing MDM to manage these units?

Yes. The IS-04Z1 runs Android 16 with Android Enterprise and is managed from existing MDM consoles, so the plant can set app, camera and network policy in the same console it already uses.

Has Braskem Idesa approved the device?

No. SAMS has no agreement, pilot or approval from the company. The page describes where the device is designed to fit, based on publicly described plant operations.
