Explosion proof mobile phone for Offshore & Upstream in Mexico

Mexican offshore production is concentrated in the shallow waters of the Bay of Campeche, worked from Ciudad del Carmen and the Tabasco coast. This page is for the safety, instrumentation and telecoms teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone for Mexico's offshore and upstream sites and want to know what a platform, a jack-up rig or an onshore base actually asks of one. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty and is in certification ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed offshore in Mexico

Offshore Mexico is a heavy-oil business. The Cantarell and Ku-Maloob-Zaap fields produce heavy, sour crude, and newer developments such as Ayatsil add to the same marine region. Most of the work is done from fixed platform complexes linked by bridges and pipelines, with drilling and workover done from jack-up rigs and support from supply vessels. A platform is a compact classified area: the wellbay, separation and compression decks are Zone 1 or Zone 2 for gas, the accommodation module is a pressurised safe area, and the walk between them is a few minutes in the open air with wind and spray. That is the route a handset has to survive, several times a shift, for years.

Operators and contractors

Pemex Exploracion y Produccion
Operates the large Campeche complexes; see the explosion proof phone for Pemex page for the wider estate.
Private and joint-venture operators
Companies awarded blocks in Mexico's licensing rounds, such as Eni's Area 1 fields off Tabasco.
Drilling contractors
Jack-up and platform rig crews who rotate between fields on a campaign basis.
Offshore service companies
Wireline, well test, coiled tubing and inspection teams who arrive for a job and leave.
Marine and aviation support
Supply vessel crews and helicopter operators out of Ciudad del Carmen.
Fabrication and maintenance yards
Platform maintenance and brownfield modification scopes done from coastal yards.

Areas and bases

Wellbays and wellheads
Gas and oil release sources; Zone 1 around wellheads and Christmas trees.
Separation and gas compression
Process decks handling sour gas where H2S makes a leak a toxic hazard as well as a fire risk.
Helidecks
Fuelling and landing area where handset rules are set by the helicopter operator.
Accommodation module
Pressurised safe area; charging, enrolment and the spare handset live here.
Jack-up rigs and workover units
Mud pits, shaker areas and the drill floor, with temporary classified zones.
Ciudad del Carmen base
Port, heliport and warehouses; mostly a safe area, with classified fuel and chemical stores.
How the work is organised

What offshore rotations do to a handset

A phone that works in a workshop trial can still fail the rotation. These are the points that matter once the helicopter has left.

The transfer is the deadline

Crews move by helicopter or crew boat, and anything that is not on the manifest does not arrive. Handsets are enrolled, charged and tested onshore, and a spare travels with each crew so that one failed unit does not leave a team without a camera or a means of calling the control room until the next transfer.

Heavy salt and humidity, all year

A deck in the Bay of Campeche is wet with spray and warm for most of the year. IP68 sealing, rugged build and a rugged build are designed for that, and the battery is specified to last a shift rather than a morning, which matters on a deck with few places to charge safely.

Many companies, one deck

An operator, a drilling contractor, a well-test company and a catering firm may all be on one platform at once. MDM profiles let each company's handsets carry their own approved apps and no more, and a device can be wiped when a contractor demobilises.

Weak signal beyond the platform

Connectivity offshore comes from the platform network, often over satellite or microwave links, and is limited. Handsets that cache permits, drawings and checklists for offline use, and sync when Wi-Fi is available, fit that pattern better than ones that need a live connection to open a procedure.

Rules for the aircraft

Helicopter operators set their own rules on electronic devices in the cabin. Ask the aviation contractor what they require for a handset in flight mode, and treat the Ex certificate and the aircraft rule as two separate checks.

Use cases · Offshore

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Production01

Wellbay and process deck rounds

An operator logs pressures and temperatures, photographs a weeping flange and reports its position on a deck with several look-alike modules. The 50 MP camera and position fix go into the same report, from the same device, without carrying a camera in a pouch.

Drilling02

Rig move and workover campaigns

When a jack-up arrives on location its classified areas arrive with it. Crews carry enrolled handsets for the permit, the daily report and the contact list, and the operator can restrict them to the apps approved for that campaign.

Marine03

Supply vessel and base logistics

At Ciudad del Carmen, base staff and vessel crews coordinate cargo and fuel transfers near classified storage. A handset that can be used at the fuel store and aboard the vessel avoids switching between devices on the quay.

Questions · Offshore

Frequently asked questions

Is offshore a different zone classification from onshore refining?

The method is the same, but the layout differs. On a platform, classified zones are tight and close to living quarters, so the drawing and the ventilation arrangements decide where a handset may go. The IS-04Z1 design target is Zone 1 and Zone 21, with certification in progress.

Does a handset need to withstand H2S?

Sour gas is a toxic hazard as much as a flammable one, and personal gas detectors remain the safety device for it. A phone is not a gas detector. Ask the operator's safety team how detectors and handsets are meant to be carried together.

Who decides whether private operators accept the device?

Each operator does, through its own procurement and HSE process. Licence conditions and Mexican regulation, including ASEA in the hydrocarbons sector, sit above that, so ask each operator what evidence their review needs.

Can we trial a unit offshore before launch?

Not before a certificate covers it. Documentation can be reviewed now, and an evaluation can start in a safe area once units are available; we will not supply an uncertified device into a classified zone.
