Explosion proof mobile phone for Petrochemicals & Ports in Mexico

Coatzacoalcos, Altamira and the Gulf industrial corridor hold most of Mexico's petrochemical capacity, and they are also ports where chemicals, fuels and gas move across a quay. This page is for the safety, operations and telecoms teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone for Mexican petrochemical plants and port terminals, where Zone 1 gas areas sit next to Zone 21 dust areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed for that mix and is in certification ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed at Mexican petrochemical ports

The southern Veracruz cluster around Coatzacoalcos, Minatitlan and Cosoleacaque makes ethylene, polyethylene, chlorine derivatives, ammonia and polyester precursors, with the Laguna de Pajaritos port serving it. Further north, Altamira in Tamaulipas combines polypropylene, polyester and other chemical plants with a port that handles a large share of Mexico's imported and exported petrochemical liquids. Between them the gas groups are varied: ethylene and ethylene oxide are Group IIB, hydrogen is Group IIC, and aromatics and ammonia are Group IIA. Plastics, resin and sulphur add dust. A single operator can be moving a cargo through a jetty loading arm while another is bagging pellets a few hundred metres away.

Jetty loading arms
Ship-to-shore transfer of flammable liquids; permit-controlled and often outdoors.
Tank farms and spheres
Atmospheric and pressure storage of petrochemical liquids and gases.

How the work is organised

What a chemical port does to a handset

Port and plant work is staggered by vessel arrival, tide and plant schedule rather than a fixed shift clock. A handset has to follow that irregular rhythm.

Ship schedules drive the workday

A tanker arrival can bring a night of transfers, hose connections and sampling, with a surveyor, an agent and a jetty crew all involved. Staff need a camera, a call and a record of what happened on the same device, available whenever the ship arrives.

Salt, humidity and constant exposure

Quays, jetties and tank dykes along the Gulf coast are exposed to salt air and heavy rain. IP68 sealing and rugged build are designed for that, and a case that survives a drop on a steel deck matters as much as the certificate.

Gas and dust on one walk

A round in a polymer plant may pass through a Zone 1 gas area and a Zone 21 dust area within minutes. A single device valid in both removes the risk of the wrong phone being in the wrong place.

Many contractors, short engagements

Port maintenance, inspection and cargo surveying involve outside companies for days at a time. MDM enrolment, app restriction and wipe on exit keep a short engagement controlled without long setup.

Rules from several authorities

Ports, plants and terminals follow operator rules and Mexican regulation, including NOM-001-SEDE and, in hydrocarbons, ASEA requirements. Ask each site's HSE and port facility security teams what they require for personal electronic devices.

Use cases · Petrochemicals and ports

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Jetty01

Cargo transfer and vessel interface

During a ship-to-shore transfer, the terminal operator confirms pressures, takes photographs of connections and keeps a log. One handset records a timestamped position and image next to the transfer entry.

Plant02

Rounds across gas and dust areas

A shift operator in a polymer or chemical plant moves between reactor, extruder and silo areas. The same device reports readings, photographs defects and calls the control room in all three.

Contractor03

Short-term inspection and repair work

An inspection team arriving for a three-day job is enrolled on arrival, limited to the apps the site approves, and wiped when the job ends.

Questions · Petrochemicals and ports

Frequently asked questions

Which gas group covers ethylene oxide and ethylene?

Both are Group IIB, and hydrogen is Group IIC. The IS-04Z1 marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is designed to cover all three, subject to certification.

Is a port facility classified like a plant?

Areas around jetties, loading arms and tank farms are classified according to the cargo and the layout. The terminal's area classification drawing decides where a handset can go.

How does a handset cope with salt air?

IP68 sealing keeps water and dust out, and rugged build addresses shock and humidity. Rinse and inspect routines are set by the operator, not by the device.

Do we need a different device for dust areas?

Not by design. The Zone 21 design target means one device is intended to serve both, but certification is still in progress, so confirm with the final certificate.
