Explosion proof mobile phone for PETRONAS in Malaysia

PETRONAS is not one site but a chain of them, from offshore platforms in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah to the gas plants at Kerteh, the refinery at Sungai Udang, the LNG complex at Bintulu and the Pengerang complex in Johor. This page sets out what an explosion proof mobile phone for PETRONAS in Malaysia has to cope with across that chain, and what the people who sign off equipment would ask first. It is written for HSE, telecoms and procurement staff, not as a claim that anything has been approved. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone meets PETRONAS in Malaysia

The national oil company's footprint is easiest to read as a flow of molecules. Offshore platforms off Terengganu, Sarawak and Sabah send oil and gas ashore. In Terengganu the gas goes to Gas Processing Kertih and Gas Processing Santong, which together run six plants. In Sabah the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal at Kimanis, which began operating in December 2013, receives production from the Sabah side; in Sarawak the gas runs to the Bintulu LNG complex. Refining sits at Sungai Udang in Melaka and, since the Pengerang Integrated Complex came on stream, in Johor. A technician's day looks very different at each stage. An offshore operator spends long shifts inside a Zone 1 platform envelope, while a gas plant operator walks long rounds between process trains in the open. A refinery turnaround brings thousands of contractors for a few weeks. One handset policy therefore has to work for permanent staff, contractor crews and visitors, in tropical rain, at sea and on a jetty.

Sites and assets

Gas Processing Kertih and Santong
Six gas plants in two complexes in Terengganu, taking offshore feed gas.
Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal, Kimanis
Greenfield onshore terminal near Kota Kinabalu, operating since December 2013.
Bintulu LNG complex
Nine liquefaction trains on one site; see the Malaysia LNG page.
PETRONAS Penapisan Melaka
Refinery and a regasification terminal at Sungai Udang.
Pengerang Integrated Complex
Refinery, cracker, storage and utilities in Johor.
Offshore platforms
Producing fields off Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah, reached by helicopter or crew boat.

Hazardous-area situations

Wellhead and process decks
Gas and condensate, Zone 1 in the open air but with compact layouts.
Compressor and metering stations
Natural gas, mainly gas group IIA, with ignition risk from any spark source.
Refinery process units
Hydrocarbon liquids and vapours, hydrogen in some units, flare and relief systems.
Loading arms and jetties
Vapour release during transfer, with weather exposure.
Tank farms and pump bays
Zone 1 pockets close to Zone 2 surrounds, bunded areas.
Offices, control rooms, camps
Safe areas where the handset moves from classified to unclassified.
Built for local conditions

What PETRONAS conditions do to a handset

The IS-04Z1 is being certified to a Zone 1 and Zone 21 design target. These are the five conditions that decide whether it is also practical to carry across a PETRONAS operating chain.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Rain on an open deck or jetty

The northeast monsoon reaches the Terengganu and Sarawak coasts from November, and platform decks are wet in any season. IP68 sealing, a screen that responds with gloves on and rugged build matter as much as the temperature class on the marking plate.

Helicopter and boat transfers

Offshore crews travel with a small bag and are not issued replacements mid-hitch. A 4,000 mAh cell is specified to carry radio, camera and GNSS through a full shift, so a charger is a rest-day item rather than something to plug in on deck.

Long rounds at gas plants

Kertih and Santong cover a large area, and the nearest safe-area charging point can be a short drive away. Four-constellation GNSS puts a coordinate against a fault report, and the 50 MP camera adds a clear photograph for the maintenance planner.

Contractors who change every campaign

A turnaround at Sungai Udang or Pengerang brings in crews who may be at another operator's site the following month. Android Enterprise lets the site IT team enrol and wipe handsets from its existing MDM console without a separate management tool.

English and Bahasa Malaysia together

Operators, contractors and visiting engineers share a shift. The interface can run in either language on one hardware build, so a single intrinsically safe device and manual set can be issued to everyone.

Use cases · PETRONAS

Where the IS-04Z1 would be used across the chain.

These are working situations, described from the operator's published footprint. None implies an order or an approval.

Offshore01

Platform operator rounds

A production operator on a Zone 1 platform logs readings, photographs a leaking flange and reports to the control room without returning to the living quarters. The handset replaces a separate camera, a radio and a paper round sheet, subject to what the platform's permit system allows.

Gas processing02

Plant shutdown records

During a planned shutdown at a gas plant, inspectors record gasket changes and valve positions in the area itself. Photographs and voice notes sit against a GNSS position rather than being written up later from memory.

Terminals03

Jetty and tank farm checks

At a crude or product terminal the same person may walk from a pump bay to the loading arm and on to the control building. A device certified for Zone 1 can make the whole journey without being left at a gate.

Questions · PETRONAS

Frequently asked questions

Does PETRONAS require its own equipment approval beyond national certification?

Large operators usually add their own technical standards and vendor registration on top of the national requirement, and PETRONAS publishes a technical standards series for its facilities. The specific steps depend on the asset and on whether the buyer is an operating unit or a contractor, so ask the site's procurement and HSE teams for the current requirements. We do not list a programme name here because we cannot verify one.

Is this page an endorsement by the operator?

No. It describes where an intrinsically safe handset would be useful across PETRONAS's published operations. It is not an endorsement, partnership or supply agreement, and SAMS has no pilot or order with PETRONAS.

Can the handset travel by helicopter to an offshore platform?

Helicopter operators set their own rules for electronic devices, separate from any hazardous-area certificate. Check the carrier's policy and the platform's permit system before planning a trip around a device. We do not claim an offshore deployment today, since certification is still in progress.

Which certificates would a PETRONAS site ask to see?

The usual evidence is an IECEx Certificate of Conformity and an ATEX marking showing the protection concept, group and temperature class, plus the communications approval that applies to the radio. For this device all of those are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
