Explosion proof mobile phone for Oil & Gas in Malaysia

Malaysia produces oil and gas from fields off Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah, and brings it ashore at terminals such as Kimanis, Labuan, Kerteh and Miri. This page covers the explosion proof mobile phone question for upstream oil and gas in Malaysia: platforms, floating production units, onshore terminals and supply bases, and what the people on those assets would ask of a handset. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is still in certification, ahead of its Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for offshore and upstream oil and gas in Malaysia

Upstream work in Malaysia splits into three regions with different habits. Off Peninsular Malaysia, mainly Terengganu, production is operated by PETRONAS Carigali and its partners and sent to Kerteh. Off Sarawak, Shell has operated a large group of gas fields whose gas goes to the Bintulu LNG complex, and PETRONAS Carigali operates others. Off Sabah, deepwater developments such as Gumusut-Kakap, which began production on a floating production system in 2014, add subsea tiebacks and floating platforms. Oil and condensate go to terminals at Kimanis, Labuan, Miri and Kerteh, while service vessels work from Kemaman, Labuan and Miri. Fabrication and maintenance contracting is carried out by firms such as MMHE at Pasir Gudang and Sapura Energy. Crews fly out by helicopter or travel by crew boat, so there is no daily return to a safe area. Whether a person takes a handset into a classified area has to be decided before they leave the quay.

Operators and contractors

PETRONAS Carigali
Operator of fields off Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah.
Sarawak Shell and Sabah Shell
Offshore operators with onshore support, including the Gumusut-Kakap floating production unit.
Deepwater Sabah
Gumusut-Kakap and neighbouring fields, served by floating production facilities.
MMHE
Heavy fabrication and offshore repair yard at Pasir Gudang.
Sapura Energy
Offshore construction and maintenance contractor.
Offshore service vessels
Crew boats and supply vessels from Kemaman, Labuan and Miri.

Assets where a phone would be carried

Production platforms
Wellhead, separation and gas lift areas, Zone 1 in the open.
Floating production units
Process decks and turret areas on moored vessels.
Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal, Kimanis
Onshore terminal designed for 300,000 barrels of oil and 1.25 billion cubic feet of gas a day.
Labuan and Miri terminals
Crude storage and loading.
Kemaman supply base
Marshalling yard, tanks and quay for offshore supply.
Helideck and crew quarters
Mostly safe areas, but the route to them crosses classified decks.
Built for local conditions

What offshore Malaysia does to an explosion proof phone

Offshore, a handset is carried for weeks without a service centre. These are the points that decide whether it lasts.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

A two-week hitch with no replacement

If a phone fails offshore, nobody sends another until the next crew change. IP68 sealing, rugged build and a 4,000 mAh battery are chosen with that in mind. Android Enterprise keeps the unit locked to approved apps so it does not drift away from its configuration while at sea.

Salt, spray and storm

Open decks and splash zones combine salt with rain, and the monsoon months make for rough boat transfers. IP68 sealing is the main protection against salt water. A screen that works with wet gloves is a requirement, not a luxury.

Zone 1 across a whole deck

On a compact platform the classified area runs from the wellhead bay to the deck edge, with little unclassified space between. A single device certified for Zone 1 covers the whole walk, which is more practical than leaving a phone in the accommodation.

Sour gas and the gas group

Some fields carry hydrogen sulphide, and gas groups vary with the field fluid. The IIC marking target means the handset is not limited by group, but the temperature class and zone must still match the platform's classification drawings.

Communications at the margin

Platform links are shared and sometimes slow. The handset does not replace platform telecoms, so evaluators should discuss how it joins a platform's wireless network and an enrolled MDM console with the platform's telecoms engineer.

Use cases · upstream

Where the IS-04Z1 would work offshore and at terminals.

Typical tasks drawn from upstream work. None implies an order, a pilot or approval by an operator.

Offshore01

Production operator rounds

On a production platform the operator logs pressures, photographs a corroded support and reports back from the deck. The device holds the round list and a photograph is attached to the equipment tag.

Terminals02

Tank farm and loading checks

At an onshore terminal such as Kimanis or Labuan, an operator checks tank levels and loading arms and speaks to the control room without crossing the classified boundary to find a safe-area phone.

Supply base03

Marshalling and inspection

Inspectors at a supply base photograph lifting equipment and tanks before a vessel sails. GNSS and timestamps add an audit trail for the inspection record.

Questions · upstream

Frequently asked questions

Do offshore crews need offshore survival training to carry a handset?

Training is a separate requirement from equipment. Offshore workers in Malaysia go through survival and emergency response training before travelling, and the phone does not change that. What a handset adds is a documented device inventory, which the platform may want to see on the manifest.

Does the device work with a platform's own wireless network?

The handset is designed to connect over standard wireless networks, but the platform's telecoms engineer decides what joins the network and under what security policy. Raise it early in an evaluation; do not assume it.

Why does the page mention several operators?

Because upstream Malaysia is not a single owner. Operators, contractors and service companies have their own policies on cameras, devices and vendor registration, and a handset that suits one may need a different configuration for another. See the pages on an explosion proof phone for PETRONAS and an explosion proof phone for Malaysia LNG for the individual operators, and the LNG and gas processing page for the downstream end of the gas chain.
