Explosion proof mobile phone for PETRONAS Chemicals Group in Malaysia

PETRONAS Chemicals Group runs plants from Kerteh and Gebeng on the peninsula to Gurun in Kedah, Sipitang in Sabah, Labuan and Pengerang. This page considers an explosion proof mobile phone for PETRONAS Chemicals Group in Malaysia: the hazards at each plant, what a shift looks like and what the safety and procurement teams would ask. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is still in certification, ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for PETRONAS Chemicals Group, Malaysia

The group describes itself as one of the largest integrated chemicals producers in Southeast Asia, with 19 manufacturing sites and 30 production plants worldwide and a combined capacity of 15.4 million tonnes a year. In Malaysia its plants fall into clear families. At Kerteh in Terengganu it makes olefins, glycols, derivatives, ethylene, polyethylene, ammonia, aromatics, vinyl chloride and acrylic acid. At Gebeng in Pahang it makes polypropylene, MTBE, 2-EHA and silicone blends. Gurun in Kedah and Sipitang in Sabah make ammonia and urea, Labuan produces methanol and Pengerang adds polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene glycols and nitrile butadiene latex. The group works through joint ventures including BASF PETRONAS Chemicals and LG PETRONAS Chemicals Malaysia. That variety means no single handset configuration fits every plant: a methanol plant is mostly flammable liquid and vapour, a fertiliser plant is ammonia and dust, and a polymer plant has Zone 21 powder.

Plants by location

Kerteh, Terengganu
Ethylene, olefins, glycols, polyethylene, aromatics, ammonia, vinyl chloride.
Gebeng, Pahang
Polypropylene, MTBE, acrylates, silicone blending, maleic anhydride joint venture.
Gurun, Kedah
Ammonia and urea, with a melamine plant under development according to the group.
Sipitang, Sabah
Ammonia and urea beside the Sabah coast.
Labuan
Methanol plant.
Pengerang, Johor
Polyethylene, polypropylene, glycols and nitrile butadiene latex.

Hazards by product family

Ethylene and olefins
Flammable gas under pressure, gas group IIB.
Ammonia
Toxic and flammable, a gas detection concern before an ignition one.
Urea and melamine
Dust and prill handling, with the classification left to the site's study.
Methanol
Flammable liquid with an almost invisible flame.
Polymers
Powder, pellets and static in silos and bagging.
Acrylates and glycols
Reactive and corrosive liquids in tank farms.
Built for local conditions

What PETRONAS Chemicals plants do to an explosion proof phone

Chemical plants ask different things of a handset than refineries. These are the points worth raising with a plant's HSE and telecoms teams.

Ammonia first, ignition second

At an ammonia plant the first alarm is usually a toxic gas detector, and an intrinsically safe handset does not replace one. It does help the response: an operator can report a leak position by GNSS and photograph the area from a safe distance, while breathing apparatus and gas detection remain the primary protection.

Methanol flames you cannot see

Methanol burns with a flame that is hard to see in daylight, so plants rely on detectors and procedures. A phone certified for Zone 1 lets operators raise the alarm from the area itself. Check the gas group, since methanol sits in IIA, and the temperature class on the certificate.

Powder in fertiliser and polymer plants

Zone 21 applies where combustible dust may form a cloud. Whether it applies to a urea store is for the site's dust study, but polymer silos and bagging halls are a likelier case. The IS-04Z1's Zone 21 design target is relevant to the second.

Four regions, one handset policy

Plants in Terengganu, Pahang, Kedah, Sabah, Labuan and Johor share group IT and HSE standards. A single device on Android Enterprise, managed from the existing MDM console, can be rolled out in the same configuration to every plant.

English and Bahasa Malaysia

Operators, shift supervisors and visiting contractors may prefer either language. The interface runs in both on one hardware build, and a 50 MP camera records a defect clearly in tropical light.

Use cases · PETRONAS Chemicals Group

Where the IS-04Z1 would work across the group's plants.

Working situations described from the company's public plant list. None implies a customer relationship.

Olefins01

Cracker and polymer rounds

An operator at Kerteh walks from the olefins area to the polyethylene bagging line, recording readings and photographing equipment in each. A single device covers both the gas zone and the dust zone.

Fertiliser02

Ammonia loop inspections

An inspector at an ammonia and urea plant records vibration and leak checks with photographs and GNSS position. The record goes into the maintenance system without a second trip to a safe area.

Methanol and derivatives03

Tank and transfer checks

Terminal staff at a methanol or derivatives plant check tank levels and transfer operations, calling the control room and photographing each connection.

Questions · PETRONAS Chemicals Group

Frequently asked questions

Does PETRONAS Chemicals Group have its own approved-equipment list?

Large chemical groups usually run vendor registration and technical standards of their own, which apply on top of national certification. We cannot verify a specific programme, so ask the plant's procurement and HSE teams what registration, testing and induction are required. SAMS has no relationship with the group.

Which sites are covered by this page?

The plants named on the group's public site, in Kerteh, Gebeng, Gurun, Sipitang, Labuan and Pengerang. Joint ventures such as BASF PETRONAS Chemicals and LG PETRONAS Chemicals Malaysia may have their own site rules. The petrochemical sector page covers the wider clusters, and the PETRONAS page covers the parent.

Can the handset be used at an ammonia plant?

Only where the zone and gas group on the plant drawings allow it and the certificate exists. Ammonia has a high ignition temperature and a narrow flammable range, and it is mostly a toxic hazard, so personal gas detectors remain essential. The handset adds communication and recording.

Is the Pengerang polymer complex part of this group?

The group lists polyethylene, polypropylene, glycols and latex at Pengerang. The refinery and cracker there belong to a separate venture, described on the Pengerang Refining and Petrochemical page.
