Where it works in Denmark

The Danish map divides cleanly. Offshore production sits in the North Sea and is reached from Esbjerg, refining and fuel storage sit at Fredericia and the harbours, and the biological industry sits at Kalundborg and across Zealand and Jutland. Tyra came back on stream in 2024 after its redevelopment, and the biogas and Power-to-X build-out has been adding new classified areas every year since.

Operators and contractors such as TotalEnergies EP Danmark, BlueNord and Nordsøfonden need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Esbjerg, The Danish North Sea and Fredericia. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Danish conditions

Denmark asks a handset to move between a salt-water deck, a warm wet fermentation hall and an unmanned biogas yard, sometimes in the same week and often in the hands of the same contractor.

For evaluators in Denmark, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: One device for the deck and the fermenter; Salt, wind and horizontal rain; Reissued at crew change; Organic dust taken seriously; Lone working on scattered sites; Danish on the device and in the file.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

One device for the deck and the fermenter

The gas marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 and Zone 21 dust protection belongs to the same certification programme, which suits a country where an operator can hold an offshore gas asset and an onshore powder plant in the same portfolio.

Salt, wind and horizontal rain

IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at exposed working, not at a pocket. The North Sea and the west coast of Jutland treat weather sealing as a daily test rather than an annual one.

Reissued at crew change

Android 16 with EMM and MDM means a handset can be wiped, re-enrolled and given to the incoming rotation without a technician touching it, so the device follows the bunk rather than the individual and no time is lost at the heliport.

Organic dust taken seriously

Enzyme powder, feed, grain and cement dust all sit in Zone 21 and Zone 22 areas that look like ordinary buildings from outside. The dust marking and maximum surface temperature will be stated on the certificate rather than implied.

Lone working on scattered sites

Four-constellation GNSS and 4G LTE hold a position and a link at a biogas plant or a remote terminal where one technician is on site and the nearest colleague is a drive away.

Danish on the device and in the file

Android 16 carries a Danish interface, and the manual, safe-use instructions and declaration of conformity are produced in Danish alongside English rather than translated after launch.

Approvals in Denmark

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

Denmark is inside the EU, so ATEX is the product-side requirement and nothing national follows it. Two things are locally specific: zone classification is governed by an executive order from the emergency management agency rather than the labour inspectorate, and commercial access usually runs through Achilles JQS, the supplier register Denmark shares with Norway.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

The product side is European and short. ATEX 2014/34/EU governs the equipment, Sikkerhedsstyrelsen is the Danish authority for the ATEX executive order and can require an economic operator to put a non-compliant product right, and no separate Danish approval sits on top of the notified body certificate and the CE marking. What surprises buyers from other EU countries is how the workplace side is split. The employer duty to assess explosion risk and hold an explosion protection document comes from the Danish Working Environment Authority, Arbejdstilsynet, under its executive order number 478. The classification of hazardous areas into zones, however, comes from Beredskabsstyrelsen, the emergency management agency, under executive order number 590 of 26 June 2003. In other words the drawing your equipment selection depends on is made under fire and rescue rules, and the selection itself is judged under working environment rules. Radio functions run under RED 2014/53/EU, with spectrum administered by the Danish Energy Agency.

Offshore adds a third layer and a commercial one. Safety and health on installations used for exploration and production of oil and gas sit under the offshore safety act, offshoresikkerhedsloven, supervised by Arbejdstilsynet, while Energistyrelsen remains the authority that grants and administers the licences themselves and takes advice from the working environment side. The commercial gate is Achilles JQS, which began in the 1990s as a joint Norwegian and Danish sector initiative to stop every operator running duplicate supplier audits, and is now the register that operators and major contractors on both shelves look up first. It is a renewable subscription rather than a certificate, which is why a stale profile can be as much of a problem in a tender as no profile at all. A supplier without a live entry rarely reaches the technical evaluation, however good the datasheet is.

Use cases · Denmark

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Denmark includes: Permit work and handover on the North Sea hubs; Shutdown work in the Triangle Region; Solvent and powder rooms at Kalundborg; Rounds at an upgrading plant with one technician on site.

Offshore01

Permit work and handover on the North Sea hubs

On a producing hub the walk back to the control room is the price of every question about an isolation or a permit. A Zone 1 handset lets the technician photograph the valve, confirm the tag and close the task at the point of work, and at crew change the same device is wiped and handed to the incoming rotation rather than tracked as personal kit.

Refining and Power-to-X02

Shutdown work in the Triangle Region

A Fredericia turnaround fills the site with contractor crews for a few weeks, and the electrolysis and Power-to-X plant being built alongside it will add hydrogen areas to the same fence. Crews carrying hazardous area handsets enrolled in the site console keep the job pack, the isolation photograph and the sign-off in one system instead of a folder that leaves with the contractor.

Fermentation and pharma03

Solvent and powder rooms at Kalundborg

Insulin and enzyme production put ethanol handling, drying and powder dispensing in adjacent rooms of the same building, under gowning and cleaning regimes. One device valid in both zone types removes the ritual of leaving a phone at one airlock and collecting another at the next, and it keeps the batch photograph attached to the batch.

Biogas04

Rounds at an upgrading plant with one technician on site

Biomethane upgrading and grid injection plants are classified areas with very small crews, often a single technician working a route between sites. Equipment there has to hold a data link outdoors, keep a position fix and let one person document a fault properly the first time, because there is nobody in the next building to ask.

How to buy · Denmark

How to evaluate and buy in Denmark

The device has not launched, so nothing below asks for an order. The sequence is arranged so your qualification work and our certification programme run in parallel rather than one after the other.

  1. 01

    Send the classification drawing

Tell us the zones, the gas group and temperature class, whether Zone 21 areas are in scope, whether the users are offshore or onshore, and roughly how many people you would equip. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the full specification, the target marking string and a written status for each certification in progress, which is enough to draft the equipment selection entry and to open a supplier file for a tender.

  3. 03

Test a unit on a rotation or a round

Evaluation units go to Danish operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful Danish trial covers enrolment in your own management console, wipe and handover at crew change, outdoor use in salt air and a full shift in a wet production building.

  4. 04

    Agree the supply route

On completion of certification, supply runs through a Danish or Nordic distribution partner or direct, and we register in Achilles JQS where an operator frame agreement calls for it. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request in Danish kroner or euros against a defined quantity.

Questions · Denmark

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Denmark?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Denmark →
Is the IS-04Z1 already ATEX certified for use in Denmark?

No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and the programme is in progress, with IECEx running alongside it. Launch is planned for Q4 2026, and nothing is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

Who decides our zones in Denmark, and does that affect equipment selection?

Zone classification is governed by Beredskabsstyrelsen under executive order 590 of 26 June 2003, while the duty to assess and document explosion risk comes from Arbejdstilsynet under executive order 478. Equipment selection has to match the classification drawing, so the practical answer is that you specify against the drawing you already hold rather than against a general statement about the site.

Can it be used offshore on the Danish shelf?

That is one of the design cases. Zone 1 classification, IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at exposed decks, and the certificate evidence is written to sit inside the documentation that Arbejdstilsynet supervises under the offshore safety act. Offshore trials belong to the pilot programme rather than being arranged afterwards.

Our tender asks for an Achilles JQS profile. Where do you stand?

Registration in Achilles JQS is part of the launch programme for this market, because operators on the Danish and Norwegian shelves both work from that register and treat it as a live subscription rather than a one-off certificate. Ahead of it, documentation and evaluation units are supplied under a direct trial agreement, which is the usual route for a product still in certification.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Denmark?

There is no list price before launch, and a supplier quoting one for an uncertified device deserves a second look. Pre-launch pricing is quoted against a stated quantity, configuration and support scope, in Danish kroner or euros to suit your framework. Evaluation units are issued under a trial agreement rather than sold.

Will there be Danish documentation and a Danish interface?

Yes. Android 16 carries a Danish interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in Danish alongside English. On a site where contractors rotate through quickly, working-language documentation is part of the safety case rather than a nicety.

Is it suitable for organic dust areas at a biogas or enzyme plant?

Zone 21 is a design target of the same programme as Zone 1. Enzyme powder, feed, grain and digestate solids all create dust atmospheres, and the certificate will state the dust marking and the maximum surface temperature so your selection can be justified against the classification drawing rather than by analogy with a gas rating.
