Explosion proof mobile phone for refining and Power-to-X in Denmark

An explosion proof mobile phone for refining and Power-to-X in Denmark mostly means Fredericia, where the former Shell refinery now run by Crossbridge Energy supplies roughly a third of Danish liquid fuel and a hydrogen electrolysis project has been built on the same industrial harbour. Fuel terminals at Stigsnæs and on the Copenhagen waterfront add storage and loading areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed at Fredericia

The Fredericia refinery opened in 1966 as a Shell site, and Crossbridge Energy Partners took it over effective 1 July 2021. Crossbridge says it produces around 35 per cent of Danish liquid fuel consumption and exports a similar amount through its own port terminal. That is a continuous process site: crude distillation and conversion units, product tankage, and loading at the quay and the road and rail racks. Next to it is HySynergy, Everfuel’s electrolysis project, whose first 20 MW phase is reported to be operating, with expansion to 300 MW planned. Hydrogen is a gas group IIC substance, the most demanding group, so the area classification around the electrolysers and the pipework to the refinery is a separate exercise from the hydrocarbon units. Beyond Fredericia, fuel terminals at Prøvestenen in Copenhagen and at Stigsnæs on Zealand handle bunker and product storage.

Operators and projects

Crossbridge Energy
Owner and operator of the Fredericia refinery and its harbour terminal.
Everfuel
Developer of the HySynergy electrolysis project beside the refinery.
Prøvestenen terminals
Fuel and bunker storage on the Copenhagen waterfront.
Stigsnæs
Deep-water industrial harbour and tank storage on south-west Zealand.

Where classification applies

Process units
Hydrocarbon gas and vapour; Zone 1 and Zone 2 around pumps, compressors and sample points.
Tank farm and dike areas
Vapour from fixed-roof tanks, loading arms and pump pits.
Loading racks and quay
Road, rail and ship loading, with vapour at the point of connection.
Electrolysis and hydrogen pipework
Hydrogen in gas group IIC, with its own zone drawing separate from the refinery.

What a refinery harbour does to a handset

Fredericia combines a conventional hydrocarbon site, a harbour and a hydrogen project on neighbouring land. These are the points that matter for a device.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

A gas group that includes hydrogen

The target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. Group IIC covers hydrogen as well as the hydrocarbons in the tank farm, so one handset can be considered across both fence lines, subject to the zone drawing for each.

Waterfront weather

Fredericia sits on the Little Belt, with wind and spray on the quays. IP68 sealing is aimed at that kind of exposure, with the proviso that a trial should include a full shift outdoors.

Contractor crews who arrive all at once

A turnaround fills the site with contractors for a few weeks. Android 16 with Android Enterprise and MDM lets a site enrol, restrict and later wipe a large batch of devices from its existing console.

Isolation photographs that stay with the job

The 50 MP camera produces a legible record of a blind, a valve position or a gauge, and your own console decides where those images are stored.

Long walks between units

The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a shift, which matters when the walk between the tank farm and the quay is long and there is no charging point inside the classified boundary.

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Turnaround01

Shutdown work at Fredericia

Contractor crews carry the job pack, the isolation photograph and the sign-off on a managed handset, instead of a paper folder that leaves with the contractor when the turnaround ends.

Terminals02

Loading and tank inspection rounds

An operator walking a route at a product terminal records readings, photographs a defect and calls the control room from the tank farm, without a detour to the safe area.

Power-to-X03

Operators and visitors at the electrolysis plant

A hydrogen plant has its own zone drawing, its own contractors and a stream of visitors. An enrolled handset with a defined set of applications keeps their device policy tight from the first day on the site.

How the work is organised

Continuous operation, planned turnarounds and separate companies

The refinery runs continuously and is stopped on a planned cycle, while the electrolysis project and the terminals have their own staffing and contractors.

At Fredericia, ordinary shifts are run by the operator’s own staff, and the big increases in people come with turnarounds, when specialist contractors arrive for fixed windows. Crossbridge and Everfuel are separate companies, and the sites are adjacent rather than joined. So the first question for a supplier is which fence line a device is meant for, and which company’s procurement and HSE teams will approve it.

Danish equipment rules are those of the EU: ATEX for the product, the employer’s duty to assess explosion risk and hold an explosion protection document under Arbejdstilsynet, and zones set by Beredskabsstyrelsen. We have no verified detail of any company’s supplier registration, so ask the operator’s procurement and HSE teams what they require of a communications device, including whether they expect an Achilles JQS profile, and what evidence they want from a supplier whose certificates are still being issued.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Fredericia yet?

No. It is pre-launch, and ATEX, IECEx and NEC 500 certification are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Nothing is supplied into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

Does the hydrogen plant need a different rating from the refinery?

Hydrogen is gas group IIC, which is the group the target marking covers, so the group itself is not the obstacle. The zone drawing and temperature class for each area are what must be matched, and the electrolysis plant has its own.

Does approval with the refinery extend to the electrolysis project?

No. Crossbridge and Everfuel are separate companies, each with its own procurement and HSE approval, even though the sites are next to each other.

Which terminals does this page cover?

The page is about Fredericia and the fuel terminals at Prøvestenen and Stigsnæs. Storage sites with bulk liquids share many of the same vapour hazards, but classification is site specific and comes from each operator’s drawing.
