Explosion proof mobile phone for offshore oil and gas in Denmark

An explosion proof mobile phone for offshore work in Denmark has to suit the Danish Underground Consortium fields in the North Sea, which TotalEnergies operates for its partners, with Esbjerg on the Jutland coast as the shore base that keeps the platforms supplied and staffed. This page covers the sites, the way the work is organised and what a handset has to cope with. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is needed on the Danish shelf

The Danish Underground Consortium is a joint venture of TotalEnergies (43.2 per cent), BlueNord (36.8 per cent) and Nordsøfonden (20 per cent), with TotalEnergies as operator. Production comes from the Dan, Halfdan and Gorm hubs and from Tyra, about 225 km west of Esbjerg. Tyra is the site that changed most recently. Decades of gas extraction had let the seabed beneath the old platforms sink by more than five metres, so production stopped in 2019 and the hub was rebuilt: eight new platforms were installed between 2020 and 2022, among them six wellhead and riser platforms, an accommodation platform and a processing platform. Tyra II resumed production on 21 March 2024. The satellite platforms around it, including Svend, Roar, Harald and Valdemar, were reconnected afterwards, and the hub can now be operated from an onshore control room in Esbjerg.

Operators and contractors

TotalEnergies EP Danmark
Operator of the consortium fields and of the Tyra hub.
BlueNord
Consortium partner holding 36.8 per cent.
Nordsøfonden
The Danish state participant, holding 20 per cent.
Semco Maritime
Offshore engineering and maintenance contractor based in Esbjerg.

Where classification applies

Wellhead and riser platforms
Hydrocarbon gas around wellheads and risers; the usual Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas picture.
Processing and compression modules
Separation, gas treatment and export compression on Tyra and the older hubs.
Accommodation platform
Safe area; the boundary matters for where a phone may be switched on.
Esbjerg control room and shore base
Outside the classified boundary; where the offshore data and calls are handled.
Built for local conditions

What the Danish North Sea does to a handset

The zone drawing decides where a device may go. These are the practical points that come up once it has been carried out to a platform.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Passing the phone on at crew change

Offshore rotations hand equipment from one crew to the next. With Android Enterprise and MDM enrolment, a unit can be wiped, re-enrolled and issued to the incoming rotation from your existing console, so the handset belongs to the position rather than to a person.

Salt, wind and horizontal rain

IP68 sealing is aimed at an exposed deck where spray and driving rain are normal conditions, not exceptions.

Evidence for a room onshore

A 50 MP camera lets a technician send the control room in Esbjerg a legible photograph of a valve line-up or a gland rather than a description, over whatever network the installation provides.

A gas marking that fits the drawing

The target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. The temperature class and gas group on the eventual certificate are what the instrumentation engineer checks against the classification drawing for each module, so they are stated on the document, not implied.

Camera and data policy under your control

Photography is restricted on many installations. Android 16 under Android Enterprise lets the operator or contractor set the camera, application and network policy centrally and keep it identical across platforms.

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Permit close-out at a wellhead platform

An isolation on a wellhead or riser platform ends with someone checking a tag and signing off. A Zone 1 handset lets the technician photograph the line-up, confirm the tag and close the task where the work was done, instead of returning to the control room first.

Contractors02

Maintenance campaigns by visiting crews

Contractor crews from Esbjerg firms arrive for a campaign, work to the operator’s permits and leave. Devices enrolled in the operator’s console carry the job pack and approved applications for the campaign and are locked down or wiped when it ends.

Logistics03

Shore base to helideck handover

Equipment and people change at Esbjerg before a flight or sailing. A handset that is already enrolled, charged and checked in the safe area saves the time at the heliport that crew change cannot spare.

How the work is organised

Rotations, campaigns and the Esbjerg shore base

Esbjerg is the shore base for Danish North Sea activity and the place where much of the logistics is assembled.

Crews rotate between the shore and the platforms by helicopter and vessel, and maintenance is planned as campaigns, with contractor teams added for a few weeks and then removed. Tyra’s onshore control room in Esbjerg means a platform visit is often prepared there, with the permit, the tag list and the photographs agreed before anyone leaves the quay.

The Danish offshore safety act, offshoresikkerhedsloven, is supervised by Arbejdstilsynet, while Energistyrelsen grants and administers the licences. For suppliers, Achilles JQS is the register used by buyers in the Norwegian and Danish oil and gas sector, so a live profile is normally the first gate. Ask the operator’s procurement and HSE teams what they require for a communications device in a classified area, and whether a partner in the joint venture runs its own approval as well.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for offshore use in Denmark yet?

No. It is pre-launch, and ATEX, IECEx and NEC 500 certification are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Nothing is supplied into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists, and any trial on a platform belongs after that, not before it.

Did the Tyra rebuild change what equipment is needed?

The platforms are new, but equipment selection still follows the classification drawing for each module, so the question to answer is the zone, gas group and temperature class on that drawing. Send those and we can match them against the target marking.

Does one consortium agreement cover every partner?

Not automatically. Even where the field is jointly operated, each partner typically runs its own procurement and approval, so confirm with the operator and with each organisation that will actually buy and manage the device.

Is a Zone 1 handset also a gas detector?

No. It is a communications and data device. Personal gas detection stays a separate piece of safety equipment that the offshore workforce already carries.
