Distances are short but sites are many
Awali and Sitra are on the same island, a short drive apart. A supervisor or inspection engineer can visit several sites in a shift, so the same managed handset should make sense at each.
Bahrain's oil and gas chain is short and runs the length of one small island: wellheads and gas plants in the Bahrain Field area around Awali, a refinery and product jetties at Sitra, and the LPG and sales-gas systems that join them. This page is about the explosion proof mobile phone question for oil and gas in Bahrain, and how one handset specification is meant to serve the whole chain. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx and BSMD programme in progress
Oil was found at the Bahrain Field in 1932. Today crude from the field and, by pipeline, from Saudi Arabia reaches the Sitra refinery, where the modernisation programme has added new units. Associated gas from the field goes to the Banagas plants, and refinery off-gas goes the same way for LPG recovery. Trade press attributes the group structure to Bapco Energies, with the refining, upstream and gas businesses listed as separate companies.
The hazards change as the product moves. Wellheads and gathering lines carry crude and associated gas that can contain hydrogen sulphide; gas plants and LPG storage deal in propane and butane; the refinery adds hydrogen and sulphur; the jetties add marine conditions. A single handset that stays safe and usable along that chain is the point of the Zone 1 design target.

Each operating company has its own safety and procurement process. A device accepted at the refinery has to be raised again at a gas plant or a field operator, and the certificate is the common document across all of them.
Hydrogen sits at the refinery, propane and butane at the gas plants, and crude hydrocarbons at the wellsites. The target marking, Ex ib IIC T4, is written to cover the demanding end of that range.
Refinery shutdowns and plant expansions bring large, temporary contractor crews through the gates. Enrolment and removal of devices at that scale needs a console, not a spreadsheet.
An inspection engineer visiting a wellsite, a gas plant and the refinery in one day carries one device, with photographs and positions stored against each asset.
Contractors working a refinery stop or a gas plant expansion can be issued enrolled handsets for the duration and have them wiped at demobilisation.
Loading at the Sitra waterfront needs time-stamped photographs and a reliable call between the jetty and the control room.
The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (Q4 2026) and no certificate has been issued; IECEx, ATEX, NEC 500 and BSMD work is in progress. SAMS has no customers, orders or relationships with any operator named on this page.
Bapco Energies runs a Supplier Portal for registration and qualification and says adherence to its Supplier Code of Conduct is mandatory; public tenders are also published on the Bahrain Tender Board. For the other operators, ask their procurement and HSE teams what they require. Expect each to ask for the certificate and its limits, the marking against its own area classification drawings, the gas group and temperature class, accessory rules, camera policy and the repair route. The national route (BSMD, GSO and TRA) is on the Bahrain country page.
No. It is pre-launch, and IECEx, ATEX, NEC 500 and BSMD work is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
No. Each operator reviews equipment for its own areas. The certificate is the shared evidence; the approval decisions are separate.
No. Associated gas can carry hydrogen sulphide, and gas detection is a separate certified safety system. The handset must not be an ignition source and should carry the call when an alarm sounds.
Yes. It is an ordinary Android Enterprise device in the safe area and is designed for Zone 1 when carried out, so the console and apps are the same either side of the boundary.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Bahrain. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
