Explosion proof mobile phone for aluminium and metals in Bahrain

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) at Askar is the largest smelter outside China, and the gas, dust and hot metal of an aluminium chain make for a different problem from refinery work. This page covers the explosion proof mobile phone question for aluminium and metals in Bahrain: the smelter, its calciner and power stations, and GARMCO's rolling mill at Hidd. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for Bahrain's aluminium and metals sites

Alba's sixth potline was inaugurated in November 2019, adding about 540,000 tonnes a year and a 1,792 MW power station, Power Station 5, to take capacity above 1.5 million tonnes a year. Alba also has its own coke calcining plant, commissioned in 2001, and carbon plants for anode manufacture. GARMCO's rolling mill at Hidd takes the downstream end of the sector.

Which areas are classified, and how, is not obvious from the outside. Alumina is not itself combustible, though it gets into everything; coke and carbon dust can be, and so can metal fines. Gas-fired power stations and furnaces add ordinary Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas areas to a site people think of as a dust problem.

Producers and plants

Alba
Smelter at Askar with six potlines, casthouse, carbon plant and calciner.
Alba power stations
On-site gas-fired generation, including Power Station 5; see explosion proof phone for power and desalination in Bahrain for the comparable independent plants.
Coke calcining and jetty
Alba's own calciner and the jetty facility that serves raw material handling.
GARMCO
Rolling mill at Hidd; see explosion proof phone for GARMCO.

Where the classifications differ

Potlines
Hot, humid, high-current areas; classification depends on what is handled.
Carbon plant and anode baking
Coke and carbon dust and fuel-fired baking furnaces.
Calciner
Petroleum coke, fines and hot process gas.
Casthouse
Molten metal, gas-fired furnaces and moisture hazards that call for strict housekeeping.
Power stations
Fuel-gas skids and turbine halls, ordinary gas classification.
Rolling mill
Oil mist, furnace gas and metal fines.

How an aluminium site is worked, and what it asks of a handset

A potline never stops

Potlines run continuously, so maintenance is done around live production rather than in a single shutdown. A handset is carried on rounds in a hot environment and has to survive that heat and humidity as well as the dust.

Dust has several identities

Calcined coke and carbon fines are combustible; alumina mostly is not but clogs seals; aluminium fines are conductive metal dust. The IP68 sealing is relevant to all three. The dust group on the certificate is what separates them.

Heat from the process, not the weather

Casthouse and furnace areas are hot all year. The T4 temperature class and the stated operating range are the numbers to check.

Own power, own gas hazards

Self-generation means fuel-gas areas around turbines on a site that also holds dust areas. One handset that covers both Zone 1 and Zone 21 avoids a second device.

Large contractor populations at stops

Casthouse relines and line work bring many contractor crews onto site. Android Enterprise enrolment lets an operator issue and recover devices at that scale.

Use cases · Aluminium

Where the IS-04Z1 would be used in an aluminium chain

Smelting01

Potroom and carbon plant rounds

An operator logs observations on a line, photographs an anode or bus issue and reports it, with a position, to the control room without leaving the area.

Utilities02

Power station fuel-gas areas

A technician at a turbine fuel-gas skid needs a gas-classified device and a way to report a fault, which is a different problem from the potroom dust and handled by the same handset.

Rolling03

Mill rounds at Hidd

A fitter on a mill stop carries permits and isolation lists on an enrolled handset, locked to the apps the operator has approved.

What the operators will ask of a supplier

The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (Q4 2026) and no certificate has been issued; IECEx, ATEX, NEC 500 and BSMD work is in progress. SAMS has no relationship with Alba or GARMCO.

We found no published Alba or GARMCO supplier-registration programme to cite, so this stays generic: ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams who approves communications equipment for classified areas, which dust group and gas group they need, and whether an IECEx certificate is enough on its own. Alba is a large buyer with its own safety documentation, and GARMCO runs its own approvals, so a decision at one does not carry to the other. The national route is on the Bahrain country page.

Questions · Aluminium

Frequently asked questions

Is a dust-rated phone different from a gas-rated one?

Yes. Gas and dust zones are separate classifications with separate test regimes. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, and the certificate scope is the evidence once it exists.

Is alumina dust an explosion risk?

Alumina itself is not normally combustible. The risk in an aluminium chain comes from coke and carbon fines, metal fines and fuel gas. The operator's classification study sorts which applies where.

Does one device suit the smelter and the rolling mill?

The specification target is the same, but each operator classifies its own areas and approves its own equipment.

Can a phone be used inside a potroom at all?

That depends on the operator's rules, which cover heat, magnetic fields and personal devices. Ask Alba's HSE team.
