Explosion proof mobile phone for GARMCO

GARMCO, the Gulf Aluminium Rolling Mill Company, rolls aluminium into sheet, coil and circles at the Hidd Industrial Area. This page is for the HSE, maintenance and telecoms teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone for Bahrain rolling-mill work and want to know where the hazardous areas of a mill really are, because they are not where a smelter's are. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for GARMCO's Hidd rolling mill

GARMCO was founded in 1981 by the governments of Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia and began operations in 1986. Trade press describes a plant of around 165,000 tonnes a year of rolled product, with foil stock in 8011 and 8150 alloys alongside sheet, coil and circles. The mill is in the Hidd Industrial Area on the east coast.

A rolling mill is not a smelter, and a handset specification copied from one will miss. The risk here is a spread of smaller ones: gas-fired furnaces, lubricating oil in the mills, metal fines in the finishing and scrap areas, and the maintenance work that opens up all of them at once.

Process areas to classify

Melting and holding furnaces
Fired on fuel gas in most plants of this type, with a gas train classified around it.
Hot rolling mill
Heat, rolling oil and emulsion near the stand; classification depends on the oil and the extraction.
Cold rolling mill
Rolling oil mist, fume extraction and fine metal particles in the same hall.
Annealing furnaces
Heat-treatment ovens with their own fuel-gas supply and atmosphere control.
Scrap and finishing
Metal fines and swarf, where combustible dust may need to be assessed.
Offices and stores
Safe-area buildings and the stores that hold spares.
How work runs · GARMCO

What the work pattern means for a handset

A mill works continuously on rolling schedules, with planned stops for roll changes, furnace work and larger shutdowns. Most of the people inside the classified areas are operators, maintenance fitters and electricians.

Metal dust is a different class from carbon dust

Aluminium fines are conductive metal dust, which is a separate dust group (IIIC) from non-conductive carbon or coke dust. The target is Zone 21 duty; whether the certificate covers group IIIC is the line an engineer should look for on a metal-dust area.

Oil mist and fire risk, not only explosion risk

Rolling lubricants can form a mist, and mill fires are a known hazard of the process. The operator decides which areas it classifies and which it manages as a fire risk; the handset is chosen to suit the stricter case.

Heat comes from the process, not the weather

Hot mill and furnace areas run warm all year, on top of the coastal humidity at Hidd. The temperature class and the working temperature range are the two figures to compare with the area.

A single site makes a pilot easy to scope

GARMCO has one rolling mill. A first evaluation would be a bounded set of rounds and stops, rather than a spread of plants.

Camera and photography permits

A mill holds commercial process know-how. Photography policy is set by the operator and can be pushed through the existing MDM console.

Use cases · GARMCO

Where the IS-04Z1 would be used at the mill

Furnaces01

Fuel-gas train inspections

A maintenance technician checking burner trains and valve lineups on a casting or annealing furnace records readings, photographs a connection and reports to the control room, in an area classified around the gas supply.

Rolling02

Mill hall rounds

An operator on a cold mill round logs oil system observations and reports a leak or a blocked extraction with a photograph and a position, without leaving the hall to find a safe-area phone.

Maintenance03

Roll changes and planned stops

Contractor crews working a stop need permits, isolation lists and a way to reach the planner. An enrolled handset carries those and is locked down to the apps the operator approves.

Approvals · GARMCO

What the operator will ask of a supplier

The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (Q4 2026) and no certificate has been issued; IECEx, ATEX, NEC 500 and BSMD work is in progress. SAMS has no relationship with GARMCO, and nothing here describes a GARMCO approval programme.

We could not find a published GARMCO supplier-registration scheme, so this stays generic: ask GARMCO's procurement and HSE teams how they approve equipment for classified areas, who signs off communications equipment, and whether they accept an IECEx certificate alone or want local conformity evidence as well. Expect questions on the dust group and temperature class on the certificate, the battery and charger, the camera policy and how repairs are done. The national route (BSMD, GSO and TRA) is on the Bahrain country page.

Questions · GARMCO

Frequently asked questions

Does GARMCO share Alba's approvals?

Do not assume so. They are separate companies with their own safety documentation and procurement. Ask each.

Is rolling-mill dust covered by the same certificate scope as potroom dust?

The Zone 21 design target is the same concept, but metal fines are conductive and fall in a different dust group from carbon. Check the group on the certificate once issued, and what the operator's own assessment says for each area.

Is a phone allowed near hot mill stands?

That depends on the operator's classification of the area and its own rules. The handset's temperature class and operating range are the facts to put against them.

Who decides whether an area is Zone 21 or simply a housekeeping issue?

The operator, through its hazardous-area classification study. A supplier should ask for the drawings rather than guess.
